Netflix Moves One Step Closer To
Downloadable Movies
09/22/2004 11:55 AMWhile Netflix and Tivo still haven't confirmed their
rumored
relationship, Netflix is still pushing forward with getting the
other pieces in place for any kind of downloadable video-on-demand
offering. They've now
signed a deal with Warner
Brothers to test movie downloads. Of course, this also
demonstrates some of the hassle Netflix has to go through to build
such a service. They need to go to each and every studio and convince
them that (no, really) if they let Netflix help them offer video on
demand it will let them rent more movies, and it won't mean the end of
the movie industry because some kid figures out how to break whatever
copy protection scheme they agree to use.

Netflix + TiVo: Done
Netflix + TiVo: Done
09/07/2004 03:08 AM
Back in January, we had discussed that coming convergence of TV and
movies in the video-on-demand space and discussed the somewhat obvious
connection of
TiVo +
Netflix. It appears that the management of both of those
companies has figured it out as well, as Newsweek has the "high level
sources" rumor mill spinning about
TiVo and
Netflix teaming up to offer a combined movies-on-demand service.
While the details aren't there, this does make a lot of sense for both
companies, who each need to differentiate themselves from the growing
competition within their space. Both have built up great brand names,
and extraordinarily loyal followings, but are now facing strong
competition from more established players with huge wallets. A
combined solution that let users download movies directly to their
TiVo (and, even better, take them "on the go" with TiVoToGo) has
tremendous potential and would keep them a step ahead of the
competition for now. Still, it remains to be seen exactly how they
implement this solution. If it's not done well, it could be damaging
to the reputation of both companies, while taking attention away from
their existing solutions. It's also unclear if there will be
exclusivity in this relationship, or if both players will be able to
team up with others as well.

Netflix And TiVo? Perfect Together
Netflix And TiVo? Perfect Together
01/27/2004 01:44 PMA long, but interesting,
look at
Netflix's business. The article points out, accurately, that
Netflix is going to be a strong competitor for any online "video on
demand" outfit - as they basically are a video on demand outfit that
just takes a bit longer to deliver - but comes with much more freedom
for the end user. However, the company clearly realizes that their
biggest threat doesn't appear to be the recent copycat attempts by
folks like Wal-Mart and Blockbuster, but the future of video on
demand. Unlike most companies that miss the boat on disruptive
technologies, Netflix is already trying to figure out how they'll
compete in that space as the technology gets better. They haven't
given up much in the way of details, but are working on tests of video
on demand systems they can offer as an option - allowing for a gradual
transition when (if!) people want their movies delivered over the
internet. At the end, the article makes one interesting prediction:
Netflix and TiVo should team up to offer some sort of combined
solution. The article doesn't specifically discuss what that solution
should be, but it could make a lot of sense. Offering up an easy way
to "download" the video of your choice to your TiVo could be fairly
compelling.

Amazon Might Partner With Netflix Or
Blockbuster To Rent DVDs In The US
04/14/2005 10:36 PMLast year, Netflix surprised a lot of people by announcing that they
believed
Amazo
n was about to enter the DVD rental market. It's not often that
one company's entrance into a market is announced by a potential
competitor. While Amazon eventually did launch a DVD rental service,
it
was only in the UK. Perhaps Amazon's brief experience in that
market has convinced Jeff Bezos that the company would be better off
not going it alone in the US. Amazon execs have reportedly been
chatting with both
Netflix and Blockbuster about a partnership to offer DVD rentals
in the US. Depending on the terms offered (a big if, of course),
Netflix would probably be smart to jump on this opportunity. It keeps
Amazon from competing directly, and gives them access not only to
Amazon's marketing reach, but also could allow them to better tie into
Amazon's customer database and recommendation information -- which
could strengthen Netflix's own recommendation offering.

Netflix and TiVo teaming up to bring
rental videos on demand
09/07/2004 04:57 AMThe majority of us that have cable or a dish have the capability to
do pay for view. I have always been very disappointed with pay for
view offerings, thus we rent video's on a regular basis. The wife also
gets them from the library which is the best deal in town. But now
Tivo and Netflix are proposing a deal where you can rent a video from
Netflix and have it downloaded directly into your TiVo via your
broadband connection.
This is a very smart move. I am sure the MPAA will be bitching
along with the broadband providers who are going to forced to adsorb
the extra bandwidth that this would create. [MSNBC]

03/25/2005 11:10 AMDave Zatz has updated his handy TiVo To Go guide to include
instructions for moving your recorded TiVo content over to Sony's

manual transcoding and the like in between, but I'm sure someone will
build a nice all-in-one tool soon enough. Until then, Dave's got the
basic steps (and plenty more info for transferring your TiVo To Go
content elsewhere, not just the PSP).

How The Content Industry Is Trying To
Prevent TiVo From Innovating
How The Content Industry Is Trying To
Prevent TiVo From Innovating
07/22/2004 12:57 PMIt's an innovation that TiVo should have done years ago, and which
others have already hacked their TiVo to do, or setup other systems
which allowed it, but now that TiVo wants to let users transfer what
they record to other devices,
the content
industry is freaking out. Among those complaining is the NFL, who
is worried that someone will use this system to send a copy of a game
to an area where TV coverage is "blacked out." As TiVo points out, it
would take 144 hours to transfer a game at this point. That's a bit
misleading, of course, as bandwidth is getting faster, but the system
TiVo is designing seems clearly set up to limit unauthorized copying.
If someone actually goes through the trouble of getting a football
game in a "blacked out" zone, does it really matter that much? For
the most part, what TiVo is doing would allow
more people to
view the commercials that help the TV industry make money. Of course,
the end result, like everything the entertainment industry tries to
block, is that people will continue to hack their way to do this
anyway, and the entertainment industry will have even less control.
Once again, with their short-term thinking they're shooting their own
businesses in the foot.
