Brian Kernighan, the documenter of the C programming language, wrote a rant entitled Why Pascal is Not My Favourite Programming Language. I can picture him thinking to himself smugly as he repeatedly strikes facetiously at Pascal by describing a few of its small flaws over and over again. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to Kernighan's tract. Pascal has matured and grown in leaps and bounds, becoming a premier commercial language. Meanwhile, C has continued to stagnate over the last 35 years with few fundamental improvements made. It's time to redress the balance; here's why C is now owned by Pascal. - James Joyce. James appears to be more fond of PHP than C. No objections there! And if you don't take it all too seriously, the responses are quite amusing.

The Perfect Programming Language

The Perfect Programming Language 06/22/2005 01:56 AM

Being Popular: Here's an extremely long but interesting essay from Paul Graham about how to design the perfect programming language. He has no plans to do this, of course, but in considering the question he covers a lot of ground on why certain languages have thrived and others haven't.

For example:

To become popular, a programming language has to be the scripting language of a popular system. Fortran and Cobol were the scripting languages of early IBM mainframes. C was the scripting language of Unix, and so, later, was Perl. Tcl is the scripting language of Tk. Java and Javascript are intended to be the scripting languages of web browsers.

And:

One thing hackers like is brevity. Hackers are lazy, in the same way that mathematicians and modernist architects are lazy: they hate anything extraneous. It would not be far from the truth to say that a hacker about to write a program decides what language to use, at least subconsciously, based on the total number of characters he'll have to type.

And of course:

There is one thing more important than brevity to a hacker: being able to do what you want. In the history of programming languages a surprising amount of effort has gone into preventing programmers from doing things considered to be improper. This is a dangerously presumptuous plan. How can the language designer know what the programmer is going to need to do?

Something to know: Paul Graham hates Java, so if you're a Java programmer, prepared to be offended. (It was a comment to that post by Joe Langeway that led me to this essay.)

To keep up with employment trends in programming languages I have searched the most popular job search engines (monster.com, dice.com, and hotjobs.com) to catagorize the number of job listings by the programming languages mentioned in each listing. Each search engine is different. As such, a description of the search techniques is also presented. -- Eric Turner

As a comparison, here are the PHP equivalents taken 2 days after the above article was posted.

PHP Jobs (US)
  189      Monster.com
  244      HotJobs.com
   30      Dice.com
=====
  463
=====
From this rough guide PHP jobs are about as popular as Ada or Fortran. Pretty good company for such a young language. Also if you assume that all web-based programmer jobs require knowledge of Javascript (1878 jobs), then the percentage of web developer jobs that require PHP is about 463/1878 = 25%.

If you have more statistical diarrhea, let me know. I have toilet paper ready.

"tri" FuzzyBlog< /a> sees a half-empty glass, but still prefers digging ditches to ditching PHP.

The Visual C++ team spent a lot of time listening to users and working with .NET and C++, and decided to redesign the support for the Common Language Runtime (CLR) in Visual C++ 2005. This redesign is called C++/CLI, and is intended to provide a more natural syntax for consuming and authoring CLR types. In this article I explore the new syntax, comparing it to current C# and Managed C++, the two most closely-related languages that target the CLR. Where appropriate I also illustrate analogous concepts in native C++.
