Sketch! 02/05/2005 09:48 PM

Sketch!
Posted by: wilwheaton.
I visited my fat guy this afternoon. He looks good, even if he's a little skinny. I left him with his catnip mouse, and a T-shirt that I wore yesterday, and his brother slept on all day today. I think it'll make him happy.

I was able to stay with him for about an hour. I tried to feed him, but he didn't want to eat. Whenever I'd put some food by his face, he'd push it away, and rub against my hand instead. I think he just wanted lots of love, and I got the impression that he just wants to come home.

Anne is going to visit him tonight, and his vet told me that he'd get to come home tomorrow.

I asked her how long he had, assuming we figure out what dosage of lasix does a good job of keeping his lungs dry without hurting his kidneys too much . . . and she told me that the average for cats is six months to a year. I had to choke back some tears when she said that, and she told me that it was just the average. Sketch could live much longer. Of course, he could also live shorter. We won't have a good idea for a few days.

At least he's getting to come home, though. I really miss him.

God, I have so much I want to write about. I want to tell you guys all In the City Interactive and what apparently smart people were saying about convergence. I want to tell you all about the debate I had with BPI-chief Steve Redmond and Factory records' grouchy swearing pop svengali, Tony Wilson. I want to tell you all about the Geek dinner for Robert Scoble that I attended with about a thousand other people, and where I had too many margaritas and scabbed Lucky Strikes off Hugh Macleod. I want to talk about hanging out with Joe Clark, Andy Budd and the @media folks at Pizza Express last night.

I want to talk about the complete absence of news about my father, and how much it's preying on my mind and about the mini-reunion I'm going to this afternoon for people who were present at the very first few blogmeets in London, five years ago this weekend. (Full blogmeets to follow.) And then there's all the chat that I'd like to be doing about what I should be doing in San Francisco (arriving a week today, free up your diaries), and the fifty ideas for posts and things-to-build that are clogging up my Ideas for things.txt file on my laptop and which I see little prospect of ploughing through...

But no time right now. Sorry. I swear to God that I'll get some of it done over the next forty-eight hours or so. One thing I will mention though is what I'm doing tomorrow morning - where I'll be extemporising at length about corporate weblogs on BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House between 9am and 10am. As ever, if you find these things interesting, you can get a pretty much moment-by-moment guide to my life by subscribing to my Flickr photostream, which currently includes photos of me in a radio studio being interviewed and a stunningly realised representation of Andy Budd as exotic Spanish dancer.

please give sketch some mojo

please give sketch some mojo 02/01/2005 09:52 PM

I feel like I'm on a roller coaster right now . . .

My cat Sketch will be eleven years old in April. I've had him since he was five weeks old.

Friday night, I came home from ACME, and he was acting strangely: he was in the hallway (not on my bed where he usually is) breathing very heavily and rapidly. There was something clearly wrong with him.

Saturday morning, I took him to the vet, and she took some Xrays. They showed that his lungs were about 1/2 full of fluid, and none of the vets could figure out why. They think it may be something with his heart.

He spent the weekend at this 24 hour emergency vet, where they gave him some oxygen and some other medication, to help clear out his lungs. They took more Xrays yesterday evening, and there wasn't any significant change.

This afternoon, the vet told me that he hasn't responded to any of the medication, so tomorrow morning I'm taking him to get a cardiac ultrasound. The vet told me and Anne that he should be okay to stay with us overnight, so Anne brought him home, where he can sleep on our bed with us, and be close to his brother, Biko.

I just got back from ACME (the running joke is that I secretly live under the stage there now) and Sketch is in my bedroom with Anne. He's really struggling. He hasn't gotten worse (if he does, I will take him right back to the emergency vet), but he's not getting better, either. If the ultrasound shows that he's got some heart thing that I can't remember the name of right now, he'll get on medication right away, and it should clear out his lungs and put him back together.

But if it's inconclusive, or shows something worse, I'm not going to let him suffer because I can't say goodbye. I hope I don't have to make that decision, and I've been appealing to The Universe all day to give Sketch a natural 20 on his saving throw. Please?

He's such a tough little guy, I never thought that he would get sick like this, and so suddenly. Biko is the runt of their litter, and Felix has been in and out of the vet so many times, they're naming a boat after him . . . but I love Sketch so much, I don't want him to go. It would mean a lot to me if anyone who reads this would take a moment and send Sketch some kitty mojo, especially to his heart and lungs.

You can call him "Tubby," or "Fatty," or "Fat Boy," or "Chunk," too, because he responds to all those names. He's my tubby little guy.

Thanks.

It seems like there are a lot of stories about "search" these days, but most of the focus seems to be on searching based on keywords - even when looking for images. What if you want to sketch the object you're trying to find and have the search engine understand that and locate the object you (probably badly) drew? It seems that that's exactly what some researchers are working on. I haven't had much luck getting the working search engine to find me anything, but the idea seems like it could be useful for someone who has a steadier hand than I do (actually, it appears the server might be down right now).

Brewster Kahle's Web Archive shouldn't be new to you. The service, which tries to archive as much web content as possible, is only one part of Kahle's desire to archive just about every bit of content we create. Of course, in times of overly broad copyright protection, archiving our culture isn't easy. In order to do so, he says there are three questions that need to be answered: "Can we? May we? Will we?" The answer to the first is obviously yes. The second is where copyright law gets complicated. Kahle is pitching his idea as creating a legal "backup" for all different types of content, but not everyone sees it that way. They still believe that every version of content (even if it's digital and infinitely reproducible) needs to be accounted for and paid for. The final question is still up for debate, but seems somewhat dependent on the second question. Unfortunately, too many copyright owners with too narrow a vision don't quite see that they're doing more harm to themselves by not allowing folks like Kahle the opportunity to back up our cultural heritage.

This sixth Thematic Issue concentrates on how resource discovery technologies can ensure that the high value, authoritative information of heritage institutions is effectively found, retrieved, and presented to Internet users. With a key focus on the user, the Issue looks into user-driven approaches in interactive resource discovery. Expert opinion suggests that offering easy to use services and tools able to integrate the research and learning needs and behaviours of their users may form one of the heritage institutions’ answers to the dominance of general-purpose global search engines. However, along with ensuring state-of-the-art interactive access and presentation, the heritage sector will also need to raise the public’s awareness to, and visibility of, its online resources in a more profound manner. Otherwise it faces the risk that the large investment required in creating digital collections, rich descriptive metadata, study and learning material, will fail to realise a high return – in terms of interest and appreciation, discovery and valuable uses of heritage resources. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Has Your Broadband Had Its Fiber?

Has Your Broadband Had Its Fiber? 09/06/2004 12:50 PM
Falling costs, new technology, and competition, with a nudge from regulatory changes, are bringing fiber closer to homes in the U.S. just a few years after the idea seemed all but written off. Verizon Communications, the country's largest regional carrier, is scheduled to launch commercial fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service by the end of the third quarter to about 100,000 potential customers in the Dallas area. The other two major incumbent carriers, SBC Communications and BellSouth, are pursuing their own strategies to get fiber into homes or neighborhoods and deliver a multi-megabit bandwidth boost to DSL.

Though U.S. carriers use fiber-optic cable for long-haul connections and some enterprise links, they serve most homes and businesses via copper lines up to several miles long. Partly as a result of that, typical DSL services provide less than 2 megabits per second. Putting in fiber instead of copper opens the door to services measured in the tens of megabits per second, enough to easily deliver multimedia services such as video programming and online games.

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V 06/17/2005 06:11 PM

4121_large.jpgThere's a rule in the tech industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber notebook niche.

A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5 pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.

Looking At Verizon's Fiber Claims

Looking At Verizon's Fiber Claims 07/21/2004 12:59 PM
Verizon has been getting a lot of press lately about their fiber to the home (or, as everyone likes to say these days "to the premise") plans. The latest was the news about the surprisingly low pricing that they planned, which the press lapped up quickly. Over at Broadband Reports, however, where they've been tracking Verizon's fiber promises for some time, they wonder if the press is being "blinded by the light" coming from Verizon's fiber announcements. They point to over a decade of Verizon (and pre-Verizon components) promises about delivering fiber to the home, none of which have actually come true. On top of that, they point to an Om Malik analysis that suggests the math on Verizon's fiber announcements doesn't add up. For all the work they're doing installing fiber, their primary supplier had a disastrous quarter. Meanwhile, another analysis notes that the cost per customer of the fiber installation is a somewhat ridiculous $1,360. While it is to be expected that early customers will be more costly to reach and acquire, that's still quite a lot of money when you want to charge $35/month for service. Broadband Reports suggests that these Verizon announcements are mainly designed to keep regulators off their backs, and notes the case of New Jersey, where Verizon has announced its cutting back its fiber deployments until the state reconsiders its decision to set the rates at which Verizon needs to lease its lines to other carriers. In other words, it all sounds good, but you probably shouldn't expect to be surfing the light fantastic via Verizon any time soon.

Should The Government Provide Fiber?

Should The Government Provide Fiber? 12/09/2003 05:04 AM
During the telecom boom, it seemed like every other company was trying to cover the country in fiber optics to run the next generation network. However, that idea went up in smoke when the telecom bubble burst and now there's lots of random dark fiber lying around. However, that doesn't mean the idea of fiber optic networks are dead. It's just that every story you read about fiber these days is talking about how all the work is government supported. Not everyone likes this, as many wonder if tax payer money should be spent on such technology, or whether the market can sort things out in a better way. Of course, some point out that even if you're a strong believer in market economies, it makes more sense for governments to support the installation of the basic fiber infrastructure (since it's a natural monopoly), so long as the ownership of the network is returned to the people who use it.

Can Fiber To The Home Beat DSL Right
Now?

Can Fiber To The Home Beat DSL Right
Now?
11/03/2003 04:24 AM
For many in the telecom/broadband world, the idea of "fiber to the home" is the holy grail of providing broadband internet services to customers. However, over in Milan, where one company is trying to do just that, many people are suggesting they're ahead of their time, and most people will be satisfied with just a simple DSL line for the time being. It is true that you're never going to convince random people why they should pay so much more for FTTH as opposed to DSL, but without applications that really make use of the bandwidth, there really isn't a huge reason to make the leap. So far, the company, e.Biscom, is trying to lure users with additional features like downloadable movies from the major studios, but I'm not sure that's compelling enough to pay the premium necessary.

Free registration is required to read the Science abstract. “Researchers from the City University of New York, Queens and Chiral Photonics have devised a way to control light inside optical fiber communications lines. The method involves putting periodic twists in fiber to select the polarization of light that is transmitted through the fiber. The electric field of an unpolarized light pulse or beam is oriented on a plane perpendicular to the pulse or beam. When…

Verizon's Fiber Plans Become Clearer

Verizon's Fiber Plans Become Clearer 05/13/2004 06:34 PM
It's no secret that Verizon is betting big on fiber to the home, but more details are starting to come out. Business Week is reporting that they're soon going to TV services over fiber in parts of nine different states either by the end of this year, or early next year. This is (obviously) a move to fight back against cable companies who can already offer the triple play of voice, video and data services. Of course, once the fiber to the home is there it can be used for a lot more than just video. Verizon also expects to offer broadband services up to 30Mpbs, with lower tiered plans around 5 to 15Mbps - and the ability to upgrade speeds much higher. The cable companies say they're not worried because the Baby Bells have said similar things before. Of course, the technology has gotten much better, and Verizon seems fairly serious this time. Still, it's likely that the technology won't live up to it's initial billing and there will be problems. However, at this point they're aiming high enough that even if they're somewhat off the mark, it may be difficult for cable to keep up. What will also be interesting is to see how this higher speed offering eventually ties into their wireless plans through Verizon Wireless. They've been fairly aggressive on that front and it's not hard to see the two converging in some ways.

Fiber Optics vs. Gigabit Ethernet

For nearly two decades, twisted-pair cable has been the medium of choice for office networking and has evolved to accommodate ever-increasing data speeds. In recent years, however, fiber-optic cable has gained popularity because of its high-bandwidth capacity, reliability and immunity to electrical and radio-frequency interference and crosstalk.
