Sliding Autonomy Demonstrated in UAVs

Sliding Autonomy Demonstrated in UAVs 07/27/2004 10:47 AM
A single human fighter pilot and a swarm of UAVs could work together to carry out a single mission according to a NewScientist.com story. The scenario has been simulated by QinetiQ in the UK. The human pilot supplies a goal, such as searching the area for enemy targets, and the UAVs carry it out autonomously. The system is a real-world example of the use of robots with sliding autonomy described in our July 23rd story

New Largest Known Prime Number
http://www.mersenne.org/24 036583.htm

Josh Findley, a volunteer in the Mersenne.org research project called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS), has discovered the largest known prime number. Findley used his home PC and free software by George Woltman and Scott Kurowski as part of an international grid of 240,000 networked computers in virtually every time zone of the world. The new number, expressed as 2 to the 24,036,583th power minus 1, has 7,235,733 decimal digits and was discovered May 15th. It is nearly a million digits larger than the previous largest known prime number, and belongs to a special class of rare prime numbers called Mersenne primes . The discovery marks only the 41st known Mersenne prime, named after Marin Mersenne , a 17th century French monk who first studied the rare numbers 300 years ago. Mersenne primes are most relevant to number theory, but most participants join GIMPS simply for the fun of having a role in real research - and the chance of finding a new Mersenne prime.

Largest Free Network?

Largest Free Network? 08/03/2004 02:15 PM
Panera claims a great title: largest free Wi-Fi hotspot network: In a press release today, Panera says its network of 325 free Wi-Fi hotspots is the largest such free network. They plan to have 500 stores out of 637 current outlets unwired within 12 months. An additional 140 to 150 stores will open this year, and Wi-Fi is planned as part of their design. The press release has metrics on performance: ...the average total online time per bakery/cafe has increased three-fold over the last twelve months. Internal research indicates that of the hundreds of thousands of customer accesses over the last year, the average connect time is one hour. Interestingly, there's no dollars-to-time ratio: are folks spending 10 percent more who use Wi-Fi? 100 percent more? Less? We don't know, but we must expect that they do. (Update: Here's a story from Mobile Pipeline that quotes the chairman and CEO saying, "Offering free Wi-Fi Internet access is keeping our customers in our stores longer -- primarily during off-peak hours -- and bringing them back more often," he said. Still no dollars, but at least an affirmative statement.) Off-peak hours is the mantra of the retail hotspot establishments: they're eager to fill seats when they're empty. Nominations welcome for other free hotspot networks that rival Panera's, but I think they may have the claim. Best Western and other hotel chains are rolling out free high-speed Internet access, but they are generally available only to guests, and often incorporate a lot of in-room wired service except in newer installations....

What's huge, slow, and capable of hauling up to 400 tons of bullshit? While my first response would probably be Slashdot, too, in this case we're describing the Liebherr T 282B truck, a 224 ton monster with a massive 3650-horsepower diesel engine. New Scientist has an interview with Liebherr R&D head Francis Bartleby in which he drops a load of tasty T 282B trivia, like the fact that the huge diesel engine actually generates electricity to power two electric drive motors, and the story about the time a driver of one of the big trucks accidentally crushed a normal-sized service truck and didn't even notice.

Problems and Promise in the World's
Largest PKI

Problems and Promise in the World's
Largest PKI
02/19/2004 10:13 AM
Implementing a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) on any scale is a challenging, politically-charged task for an IT professional. Even though a working PKI is an important piece of a complete security package for an organization, the lack of interest, misunderstanding, laziness, and downright paranoia of the typical user population can turn a PKI effort into just another morass of documents for which the contractors have been paid and long ago moved on to some new revenue channel. Given the dismal success rate, it's difficult to imagine a successful PKI, not for hundreds or even thousands of users, but for millions. Yet, that seems to be what the Department of Defense (DoD) has accomplished in their Common Access Card (CAC) project - the new identification cards being issued to all US military personnel. To date, CAC PKI project has issued and manages more than six million digital certificates and corresponding smart cards. As someone who has implemented a PKI for a large, diverse organization, I can say that the IT professionals who worked to make the CAC project a success are entitled to pat themselves on the back, but it's also clear that a few problems remain.
