Sequels: the lifeblood of gaming
Sequels: the lifeblood of gaming
12/19/2004 03:46 PMFrom the announcements of the past week, 2005 looks to be yet
another year of big sequels/follow-ups and franchise-related releases.
More Red Alert may be on the horizon, Battlefield 2 is coming and a
host of other part 2s, 3s and maybe even some 4s will hit shelves.
But, this is the norm, and in fact, it is what gaming is all about.
Once a game developer or publisher finds a game that actually makes a
profit, why let it go? And, without all this frenetic franchising, we
wouldn’t have Warcraft 3, or Battlefield Vietnam, or Half-Life 2, or
Everquest 2, or Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, or…

03/29/2005 03:07 PMCory Doctorow:
Telltale Weekly, which sells DRM-free audiobooks of public domain
works, has just posted a $0.50 version of "Casey at the Bat" and two
"sequels" written by a different writer, hearkening to an era when
copyright didn't mean that others couldn't fool around with your work.
Ernest L Thayer (writing under the pen name "Phinn") wrote the
baseball classic Casey at the Bat: "A Ballad of the Republic, Sung in
the Year 1888" for the San Fransisco Examiner. In the century since,
the poem has spawned hundreds of sequels, including a handful of
updates by sports columnist Grantland Rice.

No Money For Anything But Sequels In The
Video Game World
No Money For Anything But Sequels In The
Video Game World
09/20/2004 04:56 AM
Last month, we wrote about how video games were getting
so
expensive, that almost all of the focus was on sequels and movie
tie-ins. Now, the NY Times is running an almost identical article
noting that
8 out of the 10 top video games are sequels. Of course,
what they forget to note is that many of these are sports titles,
where "sequel" isn't entirely accurate, as each game releases an
updated version with updated stats and a few additional features each
year. Still, the end result is the same as was described in the
original article: independent developers working on new types of games
can't get any attention from publishers. Lots of blame is thrown
around, from the expense of producing the games, to the hiring of
"consumer products" people at the publishers, to the end-of-life-cycle
for current gaming consoles. Of course, it seems like there are a few
simple ways to deal with this issue: first, the console makers need to
make it easier for independent developers to create games for their
consoles, and, since there seems to be a gap in the market, a smart
(or new) publisher should try to make a name for itself publishing
independent games. While the article complains that a "Blair Witch"
style video game success is almost impossible in the video gaming
world, they forget that it's also
almost impossible in the
movie world as well. Very few indie films become successful, but
there are still movie distributors focused on indie films. Perhaps
the gaming industry needs the equivalent.

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees
03/29/2005 02:05 PMFollowing Blockbuster's plan to
drop
late fees in favor of a longer grace period and then a large lump
charge for "buying the movie" if you waited too long to return the
film, New Jersey came along and
sued
Blockbuster for being misleading about its "no late fees"
marketing slogan. Apparently, 46 other states jumped on the bandwagon
and sued as well. Sensing trouble, it appears that Blockbuster has
given in and
will pay up a fine, refund fees
paid and change their marketing program away from the "no late
fees" claim. It still seems like Blockbuster had a valid claim here.
A late fee is a "punishment" fee for returning a product late.
Blockbuster wasn't punishing customers, but simply assuming that they
were buying the video in question. In other words, people were
getting something in return for those fees -- not just randomly
charged.
