Brent’s Psychic Predictions for
2004
Brent’s Psychic Predictions for
2004
12/30/2003 02:53 PMAre RSS aggregators pretty much there, just needing some tweaks and
small features—or at they still at the very beginning of their
evolution, with a long road still ahead?
This question was asked on the NetNewsWire beta testing list.
It’s a good question.
Answer: aggregators still have a
long road ahead. What you
see now is just the beginning.
I have an idea of some of the things you’ll see in 2004 (not
just in NetNewsWire but in aggregators in general). So consider this
as Brent’s psychic predictions for 2004.
1. Atom syndication support. Some aggregators already have this, and I
suspect most will by mid-2004.
2. Synching. The idea is to synchronize not only your subscription
lists but also the read/unread status of individual
headlines—and to make it so it works between different apps,
even apps running on different operating systems.
3. Easier subscribing. One of the problems for new users is the
problem of subscribing to feeds. The “feed” URL scheme is
a step forward here, because it makes it so you can subscribe to feeds
directly from your browser. It also means instead of lots of ways to
do this, which is inherently confusing, aggregator developers and
users can collapse it down to one way. (I suspect there will be other
good ideas too—especially in the realm of finding feeds.) Making
all this easy for new users is a high priority.
Anyway... individual aggregators, NetNewsWire included, will add lots
of other new features not listed above. The above are just the things
I predict aggregators will do in common for 2004. I expect lots of
innovation to come from all over, but I can’t predict what those
innovations will be.
Years from now aggregators will be like email apps: we’ll know
what an aggregator should do and what the UI conventions are. But for
now we get to be creative, try new ideas, see what sticks. So—my
last prediction—I except 2004 to be fun.

Pay To Have Your CDs Turned Into MP3s
01/26/2004 12:42 PMI've mentioned before that I'm still a bit behind on using digitized
music, as it seems like quite a chore to rip all my CDs. It's been
something of an ad hoc process. Every once in a while, when I want to
listen to a specific CD and have the music stored on my computer, I'll
rip that CD. However, ripping them all (over 1,000) seems like quite
a process. That said, I'm still not sure I'd be interested in
a service
that would rip your CDs into MP3s for you. Still, it appears
plenty of people are interested and are paying about a dollar per CD
to have the process done. While the service was originally intended
for DJs, many people are apparently signing up to have their personal
collections ripped as well. Of course, you have to wonder how
sustainable this business is. You certainly aren't going to have many
repeat customers.

Turned commenting back on
04/09/2004 04:01 PMI spent several hours trying to install James Seng's CAPTCHA comment
spam reduction MT hack, but didn't have any luck. Seng isn't answering
questions any more about his hack, but apparently (undocumented), it
requires a newer version of GD.pm than the antiquated 1.38 version
that my webhost, phpwebhosting.com, has installed. I tried convincing
my webhost to upgrade their version of GD, but they declined, and when
I tried to do a private install, I found so many other packages that
also needed upgrading that in the end I gave it up. The problem with
comment spam is that I always feel like my site has been defaced, and
I wonder why someone would go to all the trouble when I remove the
comment spam on a daily basis. I have to remind myself that it isn't
anything personal, the spammer hasn't even been to my site, it is just
a script. So back to the old Spambad system until MT 3.0 ships. At
least it has sharpened by SQL skills, devising a new SQL statement
every day to erase the 90 spam comments while keeping the two valid
comments. In any case, please feel free to comment again....

How Amazon Turned A Profit
How Amazon Turned A Profit
01/28/2004 03:38 PMThe most amazing thing, to me, about Jeff Bezos was that he never
(publicly, at least) took all the post-boom Wall Street naysayers to
task for completely changing their minds in 2000 and 2001. For years,
Wall Street was telling Bezos to grow faster and faster and not to
worry about profits - and he did so. Then, suddenly, as the dot com
bubble collapsed, they started yelling at him "but where are your
profits?" even though they were the same ones who were telling him to
forget about profits the month before. To his credit, Bezos (calmly)
appears to have turned the big ship Amazon around, and is now meeting
the profitability standard that Wall Street now values. While there
are a ton of stories talking about Amazon's earnings announcement
(yes, they were profitable for the year last year), the Seattle
Post-Intelligencer has a much more interesting article
talking about how Amazon has managed to change over the
years to make all of this possible.

Wait 28 Years For A Landline... Then Get
Turned Down
08/19/2004 02:19 PMYou may recall that last year we had the story of the amazingly
patient man in Bangladesh who
waite
d 27 years for a phone line. He had requested it in 1976, at age
33, and the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board claimed they
had "lost" the application, until the press picked up on the story in
2003, and they suddenly found (and approved) the request. Well, he's
got nothing to complain about, apparently. Also in 1976, over in
Romania, another man requested a telephone line. But unlike the
situation in Bangladesh, this time it took 28 years
to get
rejected. That's right. Romtelecom has finally processed
his application and said, sorry, they can't provide him with a
landline. The man wrote back, noting that plenty had changed in the
28 years since his application: he had gotten married, had two kids,
moved into a new home... and even gotten a phone line without having
to wait 28 years.

Bush Slept With Washingtonienne?

Here is a picture of Jessica Cutler (aka Washingtonienne), who
blogged about her attempt
to sleep with different men everyday of the week in Washington
D.C., and Wonkette,
supposedly a well-known blogger who apparently enjoys poking
politicians with
her blog.
I don't know about you but the picture looks like Jessica Cutler is
giving Wonkette's
left arm a breast massage and Wonkette's right arm is
somewhere... OK, OK.
I am a perv. :-) Pretty provocative poses though.
Jessica seem to
be saying...$400 for me or $800 for both. Wonkette seems to
be saying I'll settle
for free drinks all night long baby. Hmm. Where did I
put my MasterCard?
Meanwhile, confusion reins across the language barriers. At
least one Korean
newspaper (Sports
Seoul) misinterpreted a National
Enquirer article and reported that Bush
himself, and not his
appointee, slept with Jessica Cutler. While neither
papers are pillars
of journalism in their respective countries, I thought it was
hillarious that Korean
readers are nodding their head as if they expected such naughty
behavior from American
Presidents.
In their defense, I think the National Enquire headline (Bush Sex
Scandal) put them
in a wrong frame of mind. Below is the snippet from the
Korean article, just
in case they fix and deny later.
