People Still Buying From Spam
06/29/2004 02:15 PMThere have been similar studies in the past, but the numbers on this
one are fairly disturbing. Despite the continued annoyance most
people claim concerning spam, a new study suggests that
20%
of Americans admit to buying products from spam. No wonder the
damn stuff keeps increasing. There are plenty of suckers out there.

Tech Jargon Confusing People Into Buying
Tech Jargon Confusing People Into Buying
04/14/2004 02:26 PMRecently we wrote about a study saying that
too
much tech jargon was scaring off buyers and suggested that
companies
focuse
more on benefits than jargon to attract customers. Well, as some
pointed out at the time, tech jargon can be a two way street - often
confusing the matter enough that clueless customers feel compelled to
buy. In fact, a new study shows that
more than one in four people surveyed admitted to buying the
wrong product due to confusing jargon - and you have to wonder how
many others in that situation wouldn't even admit to it (or, even
better, still haven't realized they bought the wrong product). The
question, then, is whether or not salespeople are purposely confusing
the issue to try to trick people into buying, or if they just don't
realizing how confusing the jargon is. I'm guessing it's a
combination of both - with some cases being a situation where the
sales person is covering up their own ignorance by throwing in jargon
words to sound knowledgeable. What it all boils down to, however, is
that (a) tech jargon isn't going away and (b) buyers need to be
skeptical of what they're being told and should do their best to learn
the basics of what they're being sold from third parties before
buying.

[etech] People-to-People (Microsoft)
02/11/2004 09:36 PM Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people
represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they
want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to
account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to
friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions.
Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social
interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied
this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they
send email to (TO and CC) and how...

All That Microsoft Buying Google Stuff
All That Microsoft Buying Google Stuff
10/31/2003 06:18 PMAh, there goes the press again. It was pretty common knowledge that
Microsoft approached Google about the potential of a buyout much
earlier this year, and Google said no thanks. However, now that a
single reporter from the NY Times found out about it, the press is
going nuts with
Microsoft wants to buy Google stories. From everything that
appears to be going on (and, clearly, I have no idea about the
specifics of the discussions), Microsoft has been talking with Google
about a whole variety of things for many many months. Every once in a
while they bring up the possibility of an acquisition, and every time
Google says no. It's all part of the expected dance. I would have
been more surprised if the conversations
hadn't happened than I
am that they did.

news that it was awarded a patent for, among other things, starting a
