“It’s “all systems go” for one of the most ambitious physics experiments ever attempted. On August 27th, after four months in orbit, NASA’s Gravity Probe B satellite began its year-long hunt for signs of a subtle space-time vortex around Earth predicted by Einstein’s theory of relativity. The search isn’t going to be easy, but for scientists involved, one of the hardest parts is already over: months of delicately starting up and checking out the satellite,…

As things get clearer, it seems that Apple's Dashboard is copied from Microsoft's Active Desktop. Active Desktop something Microsoft "innovated" from the days of the great Browser War I. That makes more sense.
No matter how hard I try, I fail to see how Dashboard has evolved from the idea of Desktop Accessories.

L adies and Gentlemen, Beatle Bob!
With today being the last day of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, I thought it might be a good time to shine the spotlight on rock and roll gadfly "Beatle" Bob Matonis, who, as per his habit, made the scene like sex machine, shaking his vintage-clad booty back stage (and on stage) at numerous sets this weekend. Though he's actually from St. Louis, Beatle Bob makes it to gigs all across the country, and seems particularly fond of South by Southwest, where his presence can pretty much guarantee you picked the right showcase to attend. Over the years, I've seen Beatle Bob on literally dozens of occasions. Have you had the chance to catch this oddball rock mascot in your town?

Why You Should Start Using RSS

Why You Should Start Using RSS 06/03/2004 12:23 AM

Would a Big Media Company Lose Traffic if They Supported RSS?

"Almost certainly these are the early days of a developing medium. By getting into RSS in 2004, you can get ready for what comes next in 2005. I'd argue that not only is it necessary today to be publishing in RSS, but your organization should also be a user of RSS. Your editorial, advertising people and execs should subscribe not only to your own feeds, but also subscribe to those of your competitors and bloggers. Then in 2005 you'll see with your own eyes what follows and be able to participate. This may be the most important reason to get involved with RSS now." [Really Simple Syndication]

Naturally I think this paragraph applies to libraries.

Inte rnet Explorer rivals celebrate gains: That's a 1% decline in market share in one month.

Security flaws in Microsoft's (MSFT) ubiquitous Web browser are breathing life into Internet Explorer's rivals. Since early June, Explorer's share of the market has dropped from 95.48% to 94.42%, according to San Diego Web analytics firm WebSideStory. [...]

Rolf Assev, marketing vice president of Opera Software, says sales of its desktop browser have tripled the past two to three weeks. Opera is also receiving renewed interest from corporations and having conversations with unnamed PC makers about preloading the browser on their machines. "That has not happened before," he says.

A small team (2-3) of Microsoft engineers lead by Steve Rider is building Start.com, what looks to be a personal news portal (aka server-side news aggregator).  I see that they too found TiddlyWiki interesting too and are AJAXed like rest of the web development tippy heads.  I say they too because Start.com is in the same space I am attacking.  And they are running into same problems I have.  Hehe.  Luckily, they have Dare to help them with.

It is believed the decorated Christmas tree originated in 16th century Germany. In Italy, children place their Christmas letter under their father's plate. Lucy wants real estate for Christmas in 'A Charlie Brown Christmas.' Nutcracker figurines originated in Germany in the 1700s. 'Jingle Bells' was originally called 'One Horse Open Sleigh.' December 25 was chosen for the celebration of Jesus' birth by Pope Julius I in the 4th century. Just a few random facts from the 'Sounds of the Seasons' channel on digital cable, which will be on in my office for the next month and a half. I can't help but love this stuff! There are a billion religions on this planet, so I'm "forced" to celebrate the pop culture aspect of these winter holidays - so as not to offend anybody. Don't be a Grinch! My stocking will be full this year, and I can't wait....

So, the Finnish blog awards ceremony is tomorrow evening. The board is set, and the pieces are moving. We are expecting a big crowd and a wonderful, magic-filled night.

But.

I booked myself a teleconference at 8 am on Friday - just because I calculated a timezone difference the WRONG WAY! And now it's too late to change it. ARG! Either timezones, or people who are bad at maths should be declared illegal. I really, really don't like this timezone lottery...

People who are not working for global companies do not know what they are missing.

Update: Luckily other people did also screw up with the calculations (I mean, out of like, five engineers, apparently only TWO can count!?!?), and so the meeting's off. Phew. Saved by a calculator.

People are of course aware that Google isn't the only search engine out there, by any manner or means, and although many people regard it as the biggest and the best, this certainly isn't the case for those organisations who decide that they want a share of the search engine market. Phil Bradley looks at some of the new search engines that have appeared, and will see how many of them make the grade. Reviewed are:
