eBay: Apple Twentieth Anniversary Mac

eBay: Apple Twentieth Anniversary Mac 09/17/2004 08:17 AM

TAMsm.jpg
imageSomeone is selling a mint-condition Twentieth Anniversary Mac on eBay - the same machine that gave a nod to the first Macs and yet heralded the future of Apple design in the iMac G5. I've always had a soft spot for the TAM; it was the first Mac to really catch my eye, and I thought about it a lot back when they released it (and how much I wished it were a PC, at the time). The 240MHz G3 may seem quaint now (and that's actually been upgraded from the original chip), but some of the built-in features, like a TV tuner with s-video input are still not standard in a lot of PCs, let alone the enswankings like a matching pen and pencil set and Italian leather upholstery.

Bidding is at $300 bucks or so now, but I'd expect it to go a lot higher. (Thanks, Steve!)

eBay: Apple/Siemens Newton NotePhone

eBay: Apple/Siemens Newton NotePhone 09/07/2004 02:24 PM

notephone.jpg imageI was never really into the Newton, but I hadn't realized they made a combination phone device like this Siemens NotePhone (probably because it was Europe-only). Not only did the NotePhone have a 336 x 240 screen (still decent), the unit added telephony and voice mail to the Newton itself, which could also be removed and used seperately. This auction is over, but there weren't any bids, so I bet you could still pick it up if you wanted to.

His starting bid was $365 (!), but they apparently used to sell for over a grand.

The Inquirer: FB-DIMMs make surprise appearance at Intel Developer Forum. Yet another example that in future systems, power management will be pervasive. A little-discussed aspect of FB-DIMMs is that they mostly solve the on-chip memory controller upgrade problem, since the FBD interface is supposed to change much more slowly than the DRAM interface.

I bet it'd be trivial for Apple to enable connections via Bluetooth (to your paired devices) to import photos.

Apple Looking To Make iPods Droppable

Apple Looking To Make iPods Droppable 12/24/2004 12:18 PM
My IBM Thinkpad has a feature where it tries to recognize if the laptop is falling, and if it is, to protect the hard drive to (hopefully) prevent damage. It appears tha Apple has been working on a similar technology for the more-likely-to-be-dropped iPod. Apple apparently filed for a patent on the technology in June 2003. It's unclear from the article if IBM filed for a similar patent, but if they had it's likely they did so earlier, because the Thinkpads started including the feature in October of 2003.
