Airport security and laptops
Airport security and laptops
08/14/2004 01:30 PM
Every time you go through
security you take out all the crap from your pockets, take off your
shoes (hope you're wearing clean socks), take off the coat, and take
out the laptop. Then it all goes in those plastic buckets and then on
the screener belt, and comes out the other end, bumping down a short
incline and slamming into a steel wall at moderate speed. Now your
shoes were built to take this kind of abuse, but what about the
laptop?
The ThinkPad,
which has a reputation for durability has developed some kind of
fracture, where my left wrist rests as I write, right above the slots
for PCMCIA cards which are almost
obsolete now that USB has become the universal connecting standard.
Perhaps this is a weak spot in the current design of laptops? Maybe
laptop designers need to build more rugged machines now that the TSA
has singled them out for special treatment? Anyway, it's just a matter
of time before my laptop is totally broken, it seems. I wonder if
anyone else who travels by air with a laptop (seemingly everyone who
travels these days) shares this concern?

Buying biometrically into big brother? Privium is an
IBM-backed pay service at Amsterdam's
Schipho
l Airport that allows passengers to identify themselves by iris
recognition and thus speed their way through security checks. This
being the privacy-respecting Netherlands, the biometric information
is not stored in a central database, but only on a card you carry with
you; other countries may not be so enlightened. This could well become
a standard form of identification. In the meantime, could the failure
to buy this service qualify someone as a security or insurance risk?

In his latest Langalist, Fred Langa presents a letter from someone
whose pen drive was destroyed by the x-ray scanner at the Cincinnati
airport. According to Fred, the powerful magnets used in generating
and focusing the x-rays — not the x-rays themselves — were
likely the cause of the pen drive’s untimely demise. The
incident points up that we tend to forget how delicate some of these
devices are….

Computer Security Shifting Metaphors:
It's An Airport, Not A Fortress
11/04/2003 04:07 AMWhile some may laugh at anyone spending so much time trying to come up
with a metaphor for computer security, it does often influence how
people think about certain problems and what solutions they're likely
to create. So, it's interesting to read one suggestion that we need
to stop thinking of computer security like the machine is a "fortress"
and everyone needs to be kept out. Instead, they suggest,
it's like an airport - where you let
everyone in, but restrict them to certain areas and have security
checks along the way. Does this mean I'm going to have to take off my
shoes the next time I visit a "secure" site?

That rule about not holding a baby during a search--what
is up with that?? Believe me, I am fully capable of holding my child
far enough from my body to get that little wand where it needs to go,
but there was just no negotiating a compromise. I had a purple,
writhing, screaming baby, a toddler, and a preschooler with me, not to
mention a double stroller clogging up the gate, and in the end I
actually had to put the baby on the ground so that they could put me
in the off-balance stance, search me, and invesitgate the wire in my
bra.

DVD Jon reopens iTunes access
03/23/2005 05:21 PMLess than a day after Apple closed the security hole that allowed
software to disable its iTunes Music Store digital rights management
system, the author redesigned the code to work around the block.
The PyMusique software was introduced last week by Norwegian hacker
DVD Jon, as a copy protection-free back door into the popular iTunes
store. DVD Jon has now teamed up with Cody Brocious to rewrite the
code to work around Apple's new block.
"This version uses the crypto from iTunes 4.7 to allow it to work
again," Brocious said in his blog. "If people want a Windows version
enough I'm sure someone will release it, but we won't release an
official Windows version any longer. Now, go buy music!"
