AOL Employee Arrested For Selling Email
Addresses To Spammers
06/23/2004 07:00 PMPeople have always claimed that AOL often gave out their email
addresses to spammers, though many have questioned whether or not that
was true. One that that's clear is they make it way too easy for
employees of the company to access customer information. A few months
ago we wrote about an AOL customer service rep who
used
the info she had access to in order to insinuate herself into the
lives of celebrities who used AOL. The latest is that a
24-year-old engineer at the company has been
arrested for selling a database of 92 million AOL user
email addresses along with their phone numbers and zip codes. He
sold this database to some spammers for about $50,000. How long until
a class action suit is filed by AOL customers because the company
didn't protect their info?

AOL Employee Who Sold Addresses To
Spammers Pleads Guilty, But Court Says
No
12/22/2004 01:16 AMThat didn't work out as planned. Earlier this year, an AOL employee
was arrested for
selli
ng 92 million AOL email addresses to spammers. Apparently, he had
worked out a plea
bargain with prosecutors, and was scheduled to show up in court
today and plead guilty. In return, he was expected to get some amount
of jailtime. However, while that News.com story isn't yet updated, it
turns out that the
judge has refused to accept the plea, claiming that he's not
convinced a crime was actually committed. While giving away
information on 92 million email addresses certainly seems like it
should be a crime, it looks like the guy was charged under everyone's
favorite anti-spam act: CAN SPAM. The problem, is that it's not clear
he actually violated
that law. The judge, who claims he got
rid of his own AOL email address because it got too much spam, wants
to look over the details more carefully to make sure a crime was
actually committed.

AOL, Spammers, and Mail Forwarding
AOL, Spammers, and Mail Forwarding
03/31/2005 05:43 PMHere's an interesting situation with a host I use. AOL is getting
confused as to the actual source of email marked as spam, and mail
forwarding servers are getting dinged as a result.
[...] some customers have content filter rules to send all mail for
their domain or for their mailbox to @aol.com addresses. These
customers then go into their @aol.com accounts and read their mail and
mark messages as spam. When these customers mark messages as spam, AOL
now has counters in place that record the mail server it came
from.
Therefore, in order to meet the guidelines and thresholds imposed
by AOL, we will soon be shutting off the ability to forward emails to
@aol.com addresses.
Crappy situation, but I can see why they have no choice but to shut
off forwarding.

Anti-Spammers
06/11/2004 12:55 PMIt looks like the various spam laws that help legalize spam are making
the spammers extra litigious. Following a lawsuit in the US by a

threatening
Spamhaus with lawsuits for still having them on their blacklist.
The problem is that, just because the law now gives them the

their own private efforts to block them. The laws may allow them to
send their spam, but there's nothing in these laws that require people
to receive it.

Dare Obasanjo: Mark Pilgrim has a post entitled
Determining the character encoding of a feed where he does good
job of sumarizing what the various specs say about determining the
character encoding of an XML document retrieved on the World Wide
Web via HTTP. The only problem with his post is that although it is
a fairly accurate description of what the specs say it definitely
does not reflect reality.
OK, so given this, what should a
feedvalidator
do? Should it follow the specifications? Should it
follow Dare's recommendations? Should it issue a warning if
the specifications and Dare's recommendations differ for a given
feed?

Trackbacks, Queries, and Encoding
Trackbacks, Queries, and Encoding
05/26/2004 10:34 AMThis morning, I got a trackback from a Korean weblog.
Unfortunately, if you look at how a typical trackback is sent, you see
that character encoding information is not provided. Something to
think
about the next time you are tempted to think that you can get queries
for free. While both HTTP and XML provide mechanisms for
defining
encoding, support in widely deployed implementations is much better in
XML than in straight HTTP. URI's seem to be converging on UTF-8,
albeit
at an excruciatingly slow pace. Don't leave this to chance - if
you are defining a GenerativeNaming scheme today, make this explicit.
If
you are defining a protocol based on HTTP POST, encourage the use of
the
charset parameter on the Content-Type header. Require it if you
can.

04/01/2005 02:04 PMIt’s good to see the IETF showing forward motion on the vital issues
around how to store text efficiently; check out the brand-new
RFC4042 on
UTF-9 and UTF-18. Good stuff.
