Successful test liftoff for John
Carmack's XPrize contender craft
06/20/2004 09:36 AM
John Carmack may be best known for the legendary electronic game Doom -- but his latest venture is the development of a space craft to compete in the $10 million Ansari Xprize. A craft built by Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace had a succcessful test flight earlier this week:
"The flight was perfect. It went 131 feet high, and landed less than one foot from the launch point," Carmack reported on his web site. "It can easily do flights three times as long, which may show up some problems before we hit them with the big vehicle."

Armadillo's rocket concept makes use of a hydrogen peroxide monopropellant.

Carmack said the vehicle's auto-land system worked perfectly, softly settling down on its tail section. "I had tried several algorithms on the simulator before settling on this one, and it behaved exactly the same in reality, which is always a pleasant surprise."

French porn director John Root now has a

11/16/2003 11:36 AM
Famous French adult film director John B. Root, nee John Guillore, has launched a self-described "sexblog" about his life and the porn biz: Inkorrekt, the Diary of a Pornographer. Not long ago, Root was the author of an open letter protesting a French ban on TV porn organized by right-wing and "family values"groups.

"Porn's subject matter is physical love, a theme that has produced countless masterpieces in painting, in sculpture and in literature," wrote Root. "If celluloid sex has never succeeded in hoisting itself to the rank of a cinematographic or televisual genre, it is because we have denied it the right to be economically viable. We wouldn't be having this debate if porn was what it should be: joyous, well-made, aphrodisiac art, respectful of its actors and its audience, portraying real people and making sense of its subject matter."

Link to John B. Root's blog (written in French, and not worksafe), Link to Guardian interview with Root (snip: "There's no earthly reason why a porn film shouldn't also be a good film. I want the product to respect me." )

John Cox's Blog: paFaq Multiple
Vulnerabilities
06/22/2005 02:48 AM
John Cox has posted a new security issue with the paFaq FAQ/knowledge base system from the PHP Security Mailing List today.

I have never used paFAQ, and in fact, I had never heard of the application until today. However, in this security announcement there is a very good explanation about how a SQL Injection problem occurs:

The variable $username is taken directly from the submitted login form and executed in the query, so if magic quotes gpc is off an attacker can use UNION SELECT to bypass admin authentication!

He also notes that it seems like a lot of developers don't quite understand what make a SQL injection and why they can be so dangerous. He recommends this article from Steve Friedl as a good resource. Also of note, the response of the paFAQ developers - none. They didn't respond or issue a new version on their site (or even an announcement, for that matter). Definitely the wrong way to handle it...

Kevin Sites' bl0g: How a "sojo" files a
live report -- or doesn't.
11/10/2003 11:22 PM
Kevin Sites, blogger and NBC News correspondent in Iraq, has posted a fascinating account of the unbelievable lengths to which solo journalists must go to file live satellite transmissions from remote battlefields. Equipment breaks, unexpected technical snafus come up, but news has to get through. Sometimes, the means disassembling gear to make a temporary laptop modem out of a videophone. Sometimes, that means your dinner becomes a tripod.
"At left -- adjusting the camera. See that dirt berm? That's Syria on the other side. See that guy with a gun? That's a new Iraqi border guard. Nice pose, huh. See that guy in camo -- that's Lt. Col. Arnold (he's going to be bummed because he wanted to take off his cold weather gear before going on camera -- too late. It's an Army macho thing).

See that guy behind the camera? That's me. See that tripod? It's a piece of crap -- one of the legs fell off en route to the border and will never be found. See that box of MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat)? That's my new tripod leg. See the Colonel's helmet? That's the counterweight that keeps the camera from tipping over. It's amazing how desperation can push you to new levels of creativity in the middle of the desert."

Radio Interview with John Brady Kiesling
and John H. Brown
03/15/2003 06:05 AM
KALW in San Francisco did an hour long radio interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown, the American Foreign Service officers who resigned over Bush's Iraq policy. Both are impressive speakers, and Kiesling is as articulate and as convincing as his letter:

If we can't convince our historical allies that this is a good thing to do, there is no way we are going to be able to convince the Arab world. People have to take a stand. War may be inevitable, but we need to do what we can to keep our consciences clean. There is a policy to make America safer, but this is not it. "America is still the safest country in the world. The administration is trying to scare people with this talk about terror and duct tape. We should use our safety and prosperity and our strength to do good and we can do good."

Brown said his resignation was "in part a result of Andrew Card's comment, 'Never launch a product in August.' War is not a product." I learned a lot from listening to it. Recommended. Requires Real Player.

Well, I managed to wake up at the crack of 6am so that I'd be semi-coherent when Robert and Victor (the leak finder) came by at 7am. They were right on time, too. Leak Discovery They pulled a big hose into the house and hooked it up to the hot water line. The idea was to blow air through the system and listen for leaks. Victor used what I can only describe as a plumber's stethoscope. It's like a normal...

Site-specific extensions

Site-specific extensions 07/20/2004 01:07 AM

I've been thinking about per-site user stylesheets for a while now, but my colleague Adrian has gone one better: his All Music Guide Corrector extension for Firefox fixes their horrible JavaScript links, hides the useless Flash navigation and improves their unpopular "read more" links, causing them to load content on the current page rather than navigating to a new page entirely.

I believe that extensions like this have a significant role to play. Bugzilla's Tech Evangelism project is overflowing with badly designed sites that through ignorance or choice refuse to work with standards compliant browsers, many of which have available patches just waiting to be implemented. Per-site extensions at least allow users to choose to fix the problem locally and route around the damage - and their use should send a powerful message to the sites in question.

This kind of extension also introduces some interesting questions. How will site owners react to their users tweaking their websites in this way? Is it ethical to modify a site without the user's permission to improve functionality? What about to block irritating ads?

Pop-up blockers have only scratched the surface. Let's see some innovation.

User-Specific DOS Attacks

User-Specific DOS Attacks 01/24/2004 10:36 PM

How Much Security is Needed?: This is a really interesting thought.

If you have a system that locks out a user after too many incorrect logins, then it becomes easy for a malicious user to deny access to your users by simply attempting to log in as them.

You could wreak some havoc with a script that just pelted a site with failed login attempts. You could effectively disable a user — call it a user-specific DOS attack. It would take a log review and some coding or firewall hacking to stop the script, and a lot of sites would have the wherewithal to do it.

Site specific stylesheets in Mozilla 08/18/2004 10:41 PM

New in Mozill a 1.8 Alpha 3: bug 238099 - implement at-rule for matching on site/document URL. Here's the example:

@-moz-document
url-prefix(http://www.mozilla.org/) {
  #q { background: white ! important; color: black ! important; }
}

Drop that in your userContent.css file for black-on-white search fields, but only for pages with URLs starting in http://www.mozilla.org/. Two other selection functions are available: domain(mozilla.org) for all page (and sub-domains) of the mozilla.org domain and url(http://www.mozilla.org/) for just the page matching that exact URL.

The sooner this makes it in to Firefox the better.

Settings

It's Time for URL-Specific Browser
Settings
02/01/2005 09:08 PM

Here's what I'd like to see for upcoming browsers: customized browser settings on a URL-by-URL basis. I think it's time to admit that different sites sometimes require vastly different browser settings to work optimally.

For instance, I visit some sites that scroll horizontally. To see them completely, I need to remove the Firefox sidebar. I display some reports on my intranet that I alway end up going into Full Screen mode to view. I normally don't pass HTTP referrers (see this), but some sites suppress images without a referrer to prevent hot-linking, so I need to pass a referrer to them. Then there's the browser-based printing thing I complained about the other day.

It'd be very handy if Firefox could do all this for me. I could see having default settings, but overriding individual settings per site. So for a URL with a wildcard of "http://intranet/wide_reports*", supress the sidebar and go into Full Screen mode.

This is probably hard from a technical perspective, as Firefox would essentially have to scan all the settings every time a page loaded. But what a difference this would make. Provide some centralized control and it would be fantastic for intranets, since you could control not only the page, but have some form of control over the environment the page loads into.
