Governator calls foes "girlie men" who
should be "terminated"
07/19/2004 11:32 PM
California's AGW (Actor-Governor-whatever) derided his opponents in a speech this weekend as "girlie men," and asked his supporters to "terminate" them at polls in November if they fail to approve his >$103 billion budget. I read this headline on a copy of the LA Times at a neighborhood Hollywood espresso filling station early Sunday morning -- and had a hard time believing my own baggy, sleep-deprived eyes.
The governor used the "girlie men" reference twice in a 16-minute speech aimed at pressuring the Legislature to pass his budget, now 17 days late. The remarks were apparently references to an old "Saturday Night Live" skit parodying Schwarzenegger. Comedians Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon played "pumped-up" bodybuilders with Austrian accents who dismissed anyone without a muscled torso as a "girlie man."

Senate President Pro Tem John Burton (D-San Francisco) said he was "nonplused" by Schwarzenegger's comment. "I don't know what the definition of 'girlie man' is. As opposed to his being a he-man?" Burton asked. Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) said, "Those are the kinds of statements that ought not to come out of the mouth" of the governor. "He says he's going to 'terminate' members in November? I really don't know what he means by that. That's not funny any more," Nunez said.

Kurzweil Educational Systems, which makes scan-to-speech systems for the blind and dyslexic, has been purchased by Cambium Learning, a company serving "at-risk" students. In 1976, Ray Kurzweil invented a system that would read a page out loud. At that point it cost $100,000 and was the size of a major kitchen appliance. Kurzweil Computer Products became Xerox Imaging Systems in 1980. In 1996, KES was officially launched on its own. In 1998 it was purchased by Lernout & Hauspie. Reviving Acquired Startups Suffering
Inside Big Companies

Reviving Acquired Startups Suffering
Inside Big Companies
05/17/2004 03:04 AM
There are so many stories of big companies buying startups for lots of money, and then realizing they don't really have a need for the startup. In a few cases, the company's former management team will buy back the startup, but it's a fairly difficult move. There is even the occasional story where startups selling out to larger companies have been able to write in buyback terms - but it doesn't happen very often. However, realizing that this situation happens more often than people like to admit, a new VC fund has been formed to help buy former startups out of the larger companies that acquired them. Basically, these VCs have found an undervalued market. The current owners want out, while the startups are already (somewhat) proven with a known product and known market - which just isn't getting the attention it deserves or needs. Should be interesting to see what comes out of these once again startups.

Cisco Acquired DynamicSoft, Hoping To

Cisco Acquired DynamicSoft, Hoping To
Lead The VoIP Market
09/15/2004 01:02 PM
Cisco Systems has moved to beef up its portfolio of VoIP offerings by acquiring Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) developer dynamicsoft for about $55 million.

The acquisition, Cisco said in an announcement Monday, will strengthen its position in wireless/wireline convergence by improving its ability to offer service providers improvements in next generation VoIP applications and services. Dynamicsoft's software products will be integrated with existing Cisco products like its SIP-based BTS 10200 Softswitch, Cisco said.

"Dynamicsoft's portfolio of carrier-class infrastructure products, combined with Cisco's softswitch capabilities, will allow service providers to quickly develop and deploy highly scalable 'subscriber-aware' IP communications services using voice, video, messaging, presence, and other real-time capabilities," said Cisco's Charles Giancarlo, senior vice president and chief technology officer, in the statement.
