The Beast

The Beast 07/19/2004 09:22 AM

A few years ago I got sucked into a web game wrapped around the soon to be released A.I.: Artificial Intelligence movie. I promptly discovered I was much too impatient to play this game as finding all the answers would take months, not minutes. Way too much time to waste for a movie that wasn't all that good. The concept of what they were trying to do was intriguing however.

One of the team members for the project is now providing a bit more insight into how the game was built.

The idea was that the fiction should jump the dike. A book you can close, a movie happens in a theater--but the Game should evade those boundaries. If our imaginary world called you on your real phone, wasn't it at least as real as the telemarketers doing the same thing? Realer, because you would have seen pictures of the imaginary people calling you. You'd know things about their childhood, their hopes and disappointments, their taste in food.

What's most amazing to me is that this was built by Microsoft and they actually managed to keep the whole thing a secret.

iPods in Redmond 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

H ide Your IPod, Here Comes Bill: This is pretty funny.

Microsoft's leafy corporate campus in Redmond, Washington, is beginning to look like the streets of New York, London and just about everywhere else: Wherever you go, white headphones dangle from peoples' ears.

To the growing frustration and annoyance of Microsoft's management, Apple Computer's iPod is wildly popular among Microsoft's workers.

[...] So concerned is management, owning an iPod at Microsoft is beginning to become impolitic, the manager said. Employees are hiding their iPods by swapping the telltale white headphones for a less conspicuous pair.

Looking into the belly of the beast

Looking into the belly of the beast 02/01/2005 08:42 PM

We met with a big company today.

I can't tell yah what happened - but it was intense. I mean like Arabs man - 'in tents'. Totally groady to the max.

I'm sure glad I don't work for a big company - I'd go crazy. The person we met with is the sweetest man - and he's riding this Avalanche of momentum - which can't be stopped. There's no way we can f*ck this up!

So time stamp - today was the day we had the meeting.

Funny you should b ring up Vermeer Technologies. While trying to beat a Visual Studio web project into working yesterday, I did a little network sniffing to find out what FrontPage and Visual Studio actually do to make things work. I'd always thought it was WebDAV that made them go, but in fact, VTI created their own protocol before WebDAV came on the scene. Read on to find out more than you ever cared to know about FrontPage Server Extensions (This entry is categorized as Total Geek — you've been warned).

Screenshot Beast is a powerful music composition and modular synthesis application. It offers multiple input methods like multitrack, piano roll, and pattern editing and supports skins. On the technical side, it has a wide range of abilities like sequencing, unlimited undo/redo history, real-time synthesis with multiprocessor support, full duplex 32-bit audio rendering, precise timing down to sample granularity, on demand loading of partial wave files, on the fly decoding of various sample formats, aliasing free oscillators, and full Scheme scripting support.
Changes:
This release introduces support for GUS Patch files. A new "bsewavetool" tool was added to create BseWave files (a multi-sample file format that can be read by BEAST). A new saturator effect and a new script to automatically assign mixer busses to tracks were added. There also were lots of minor improvements and major bugfixes. Language updates were made to British English, Canadian English, Czech, Dutch, and Spanish. Newly started translations are Bulgarian and Kinyarwanda.

Redmond Idea Factory just ran out of Gas

Redmond Idea Factory just ran out of Gas 07/21/2004 12:38 PM

Dana Blankenhorn raps it out....

Microsoft is out of ideas. (I liked this cartoon of Chairman Bill, from Hawaiian cartoonist John Pritchett.)

Microsoft spent the last year exploring lots of big business ideas. I even pitched Always-On to some Microsoft executives. In the end the company decided it had no worthwhile idea, so it's giving its profit back to shareholders.

Microsoft brings in $1 billion worth of free cash every month, and has set a $75 billion pay-out plan, including $30 billion in share buybacks. This is all in an effort to raise its stagnant stock price.

The result will be a higher price, but I guarantee you it will also mean a lower price-earnings ratio. Microsoft has decided to become a widows-and-orphans stock because it can't see any worthwhile way to invest its profits.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Because if Microsoft, with all the money in the world, can't thnk of anything better to do with its money than give it away, what does that say for the rest of us? What does it say for the technology business climate?

[Moore's Lore]

Sad - but true. It's up to US to prove Dana wrong!

Beware the Beast of Bodmin

Beware the Beast of Bodmin 11/10/2003 10:49 PM
The Beast of Bodmin. 'Photographs and even films had been taken of these beasts, but there has been little physical evidence to support the sightings. That was until recently when a 14-year-old boy discovered a skull with large fangs, in the River Fowey on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. '
'This is the story of how The Natural History Museum tracked down this beast... '
