SP2 Users Ask For Help

SP2 Users Ask For Help

SP2 Users Ask For Help 09/03/2004 09:52 AM

Microsoft is working to head off Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) support calls before they happen by providing a slew of SP2 online chats and Web casts throughout September. One of the chats occurred Wednesday night. The folks over at TechConnect have made a transcription of last night's questions and answers available here.

We're All Mac Users Now

We're All Mac Users Now 01/06/2004 01:15 PM
The Macintosh in 1984 was regarded by many as a toy, a childlike plaything that couldn't do serious computing. Twenty years later, Apple is a small player in the PC industry, but everyone uses a Macintosh -- even if its called Microsoft Windows. By Leander Kahney (Wired News via MyAppleMenu)

Ask the users

Ask the users 12/13/2003 08:14 AM

Google's Jason Shellen proposes a change in the functionality of the white-on-orange XML icon. He says most users find it confusing, but I wonder about that. How many people click on things they aren't interested in? I don't. Too busy. I might, if I knew nothing about XML, click once, after seeing them pop up in lots of familiar places, seeing something I don't get, click on the Back button and remember not to go there again.

I agree that most Web users today won't understand what they see when they click. However, I don't think they'll understand something that looks different from, but contains the same information as the page they just came from. Why is this here twice? the uninformed user might ask. To which Shellen says, it's explained on the page itself. But I don't read, responds the user, I just skim.

But it would be good to verify some of the assumptions by actually asking some users what they think. And we know that the white-on-orange buttons are good for something, and they will be less useful if they aren't used consistently.

Don't Cry for XP SP2 Users

Don't Cry for XP SP2 Users 07/23/2004 09:46 AM
Developers and customers had plenty of warning about the potential for applications to break from security changes in Microsoft's Windows XP SP2, some pundits claim.

NT4 Users In A Pickle

NT4 Users In A Pickle 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Netcraft reports that about 1.1% of the websites that they track are still served up by NT4, and that there's a major security flaw in NT4 that will go forever unpatched due to its end-of-life status.

Hundreds of thousands of web sites that continue to run the Windows NT4 face a security dilemma, with no public patch available for a vulnerability in a key Windows networking protocol. The critical flaw in the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol could allow remote attackers to seize control of servers.

This is a good example of why you don't want an outside company to have a stranglehold on your critical business components. Granted, NT4 is older than dirt, and no one should be using it anymore, but MS is essentially forcing an upgrade by discontinuing support for it. They've found a way to spin the PR, though:

"Windows NT Server 4.0 was developed before the era of sophisticated Internet based attacks. It has reached the point of architectural obsolescence," said Peter Houston, Microsoft's senior director of Windows Serviceability. "It would be irresponsible to convey a false sense of security by extending public support for this server product."

Microsoft isn't the only ones that are guilty in this regard. Red Hat drops support for older versions pretty quickly as well, despite the fact that the code is readily available to plug any and all security holes that might crop up.

Aren't these companies essentially saying that their old software was terribly flawed? "No, our old stuff was poorly put together and the security holes can't be fixed. But our new stuff, now that's great stuff."

Going Where the Users Are. Wikipedia?

Going Where the Users Are. Wikipedia? 01/05/2005 01:26 AM

There’s another Wikipedia discussion ensuing on the WEB4LIB mailing list (star ts here), and so far my favorite response come s from Ross Singer.

“I don't think the use of Wikipedia should be encouraged or discouraged. It's a website just like any other, however, what makes it special (and
therefore, more valuable than academic and ‘vetted’ sites, IMHO) is that people are actually *using* it.

Therefore, what we need to do is create ways to access this ‘valuable’ information from /within/ these alternative interfaces.  This search in
Wikipedia also brings back x number of results in Academic Search Premier (or whatever) and provide a link to that canned search.  Or this
movie that you are looking at in IMDB is available from your local public library.

I don't think the solution is to try to take people away from ‘what is available with the least effort’.  Good God, no... at least they're
searching somewhere.  The much better approach would be to insert ourselves into their search (wherever) and present alternatives to
whatever the user got.  We get really concerned about ‘branding’ and making sure that people know where the resources they use come from, but
this can be achieved (possibly better) through ubiquity than through forced branding by forcing people into our resources and websites.

If my library is just ‘everywhere’, then I'm not nearly as likely to forget about it.”

It’s obvious why I like Ross’ post, right? The whole idea of going where your users are, disintermediation, and becoming part of peoples’ trust circles again. It’s a very Scan-like comment, as well as being a great idea. What would happen if we started pointing to library resources from within the entries?

More than 50% of US net users on
broadband
08/21/2004 01:48 AM
John Battalle links to a press release from Neilsen / Net Rating stating that: broadband connections for the first time reached 51 percent of the American online population at-home during the month of July, as compared to 38 percent last July ... Sixty-three million Web users connected to the Internet via broadband during July 2004 as compared to 61.3 million accessing the Internet through narrowband. Overall growth for broadband connections rose 47 percent year-over-year... This is a sea change. While the technology industry went through the bust, broadband finally hit the steep part of the adoption curve. As result, the assumptions that one can make about users have totally changed. People have been predicting ubiquitous broadband internet connectivity for years, but now it is truly around the corner. There is lots of opportunity for new applications and uses of technology. I'm looking forward to it....

hi5 has just announced that they've reached 1M end-users.

Congrats Ramu et al.

OK Judith - here's your next task.

Who cares if there are 300 or 3,000 YASNSs. But we DO care when some of them reach 1M members!

So who else is part of the 1M club?

And BTW I'm not talking about dating sites. I'm talking about sites who have over 1M end-users inter-connected together through degrees of relationship.

Friendster, Tickle, MySpace and now hi5 - any others?
