Legal Downloads, Eh?

Legal Downloads, Eh? 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
It’s all over the news that a Canadian judge has ruled that posting copyrighted works on a P2P network is not against the law. (I have no idea how long-lived that URI will be, Canadian newspapers are not very careful about their web-space). I wonder if the ruling extends to the Web? I would just totally love if it I could post the occasional excellent piece of music here, and I bet it would drive business to the artists and their published works; and I’d love it if some of the other people whom I’ve gotten close to via their writing were able to share some of their faves with me, too. Go, Judge Finckenstein!

Leave it to ex-MTV VJ and techno-prophet Adam Curry to come up with what might be The Next Big Thing for Apple's iPod. Mr. Curry has done some quick and dirty hacking in AppleScript to create an application to automatically download new MP3 files from any of five different RSS feeds and copy them to playlists in the Mac iTunes application based upon the channel name. Connect an iPod, and the songs/files load onto the device automatically.

"The most notable aspect is that it's improved from humble AppleScript origins to a full-featured, cross-platform GUI app," iPodder core developer Andrew Grumet told internetnews.com. "It's nice looking and has the kind of features that users have come to expect, such as a rich set of preferences settings and power-user stuff like keyboard shortcuts."
