Newsflash! Outlook 2003 Works Right! Sometimes you feel like you ought to put it up in lights in Times Square when software does what it’s supposed to. Also, you seldom expect “improvements” to improve matters. Such is not the case with a recent update to Microsoft Outlook 2003. This update, Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update: KB835235, made a noticable difference in how well Outlook picks out spam. Someone has been doing their homework. Spam…

New Outlook 2003 Add-ins

New Outlook 2003 Add-ins 11/02/2003 06:31 AM
Microsoft has released a couple of new add-ins for Outlook 2003:

  • Outlook 2003 Add-in: Video Email: Use a Web camera to easily send and reply with a video email to your friends and family with just two clicks on the Video Email for Outlook 2003.
  • Outlook 2003 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup: New version updated October 31, 2003. This updated version fixes an issue with the browsing functionality on Windows 98 and Windows ME. Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2000 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed up. With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up. Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files

Screw You, Outlook 2003 12/02/2003 01:03 AM
I can't stand it anymore; it's time to roll back to Outlook 2000 and pray to GOD IN THE HEAVENS ABOVE that someone keeps future versions of the PIM from going straight into the crapper for anybody not connecting to an Exchange server. If you rely on POP3 or IMAP, you'll be just as disappointed with the lame UI bugs and inconsistencies that plague Microsoft's latest client. Since I’m going to keep the rest of Office 2003 alive, it’s going to be quite a trick to downgrade midstream. I’ll have to figure out a way to export my PST so that I can make the leap backwards without causing too much of a fuss. Where the hell are you when the world needs a better program, Chandler?!...

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime.

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime. 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
I've had it running for about a week now, and find it very difficult to give it anything beyond a "D+" as a grade. It's noticably slower than Outlook 2000, and (beyond the high-color icons) brings with it ghastly UI changes. Maybe YOU appreciate being able to view the subject line of a message from across the room, but I don't. Maybe YOU think it's wonderful to toggle certain features (lest you care to suffer the unusable alternative), but I don't. IMHO, the only saving grace of Outlook 2003 as a non-Exchange PIM is Search Folders - but that's only because I'm a NewsGator junkie. I'm severely disappointed with this release, and will not recommend it without caveats (as you will discover in one of my future CPU articles). Piss poor job on this one, Microsoft. Someone needs to develop a TweakUI to clean up your mistakes and oversights immediately, and I'll be happy to offer dozens of suggestions....

I’m pleased it’s doing well because it’s very good indeed. Danese Cooper has a remarkable story from the BlogOn conference, from which I quote: “Probably 99 times out of 100 when he asks that question all the hands go up, right? Well first there was a pause and then a giggle and then a whoop of laughter as the audience looked around and realized that NO ONE had raised a hand.” Don’t miss it.
