Anonymity on the Internet

Anonymity on the Internet 02/17/2004 02:21 PM

Seth says he wants to banish anonymous communications.

Seth Godin
Virus writers are always anonymous.

Vicious political lies (with faked photoshop photos of political leaders, or false innuendo about personal lives) are always anonymous as well.

Spam is anonymous.

eBay fraudsters are anonymous too.

It seems as though virtually all of the problems of the Net stem from this one flaw, and its one I’ve riffed on before. If we can eliminate anonymity online, we create a far more civil place.

I disagree. Although most vicious attacks I have received have been anonymous, I still believe there is a role for anonymity and that the value outweighs the cost.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has a project on anonymous communication on the Internet. They list a few of cases where we might need anonymous communication on the Internet.

AAAS
Case 1 - The Crimesolvers Website
Case 2 - Chatting Online About Addiction
Case 3 - The Case(s) of the Hot News Tips
Case 4 - An Anonymous Computer Hotline: Is it Worth the Costs?
Case 5 - Terror in Elb!
Case 6 - Good Communication Gone Bad
Case 7 - His Word Against Whose?
Remember that the Internet is one of the few tools for a variety of people who are at risk including whistle-blowers and human rights workers. It is very difficult or impossible to "fix" the Internet without breaking it for others.

Anonymity/Pseudonymity

Anonymity/Pseudonymity 04/17/2005 10:52 AM

EFF: Anonymity/Pseudonymity
http://www.eff.org/Privac y/Anonymity/

Many people don't want the things they say online to be connected with their offline identities. They may be concerned about political or economic retribution, harassment, or even threats to their lives. Whistleblowers report news that companies and governments would prefer to suppress; human rights workers struggle against repressive governments; parents try to create a safe way for children to explore; victims of domestic violence attempt to rebuild their lives where abusers cannot follow. Instead of using their true names to communicate, these people choose to speak using pseudonyms (assumed names) or anonymously (no name at all). For these individuals and the organizations that support them, secure anonymity is critical. It may literally save lives. Anonymous communications have an important place in our political and social discourse. The Supreme Court has ruled repeatedly that the right to anonymous free speech is protected by the First Amendment. This has been added to Privacy Resources Subject Tracerâ„¢ Information Blog.

The curse of anonymity

The curse of anonymity 09/05/2004 12:52 AM

As much as I love the web and am incredibly thankful for the opportunities it has provided for me, days like today make me loathe its anonymity. The day started off with a nasty bout of comment spam, followed at midday by dealing with someone posting FeedDemon serial numbers (since disabled) to a warez site, then ended with a bizarre series of threats from a disgruntled Dreamweaver user. Before I continue, take a look at this Google Groups search for some background information.

As you can see, someone has made several posts to various Macromedia newsgroups claiming that TopStyle has hijacked Dreamweaver. His complaint is that every time he tries to open a CSS file in Dreamweaver, it opens in TopStyle instead. And since he installed the trial version of TopStyle, it's asking him to register it. Now, the reason TopStyle keeps being opened is actually due to a bug in Dreamweaver. Every time you start Dreamweaver, it automatically detects TopStyle and sets it as the default CSS editor - even if you've removed it from the "File Types / Editors" list in Dreamweaver's preferences. So matter what you do, if you have TopStyle installed, Dreamweaver uses it as the external CSS editor.

Here's the kicker: this same person has emailed me several times and threatened to start a class action lawsuit against my company unless I pay him $1,000.00 by September 9. Here's a quote:

"I have an attorney on the staff of my company and we are going to be moving aggressively against companies using unscrupulous marketing practices such as yours. The time we lost today cost us about $1,000. That is the amount that will make us go away. Otherwise we are going to seek a class action lawsuit against you. We will start by finding others who have been damaged by your practices. This will be done with a Google Adwords ad that comes up each time someone enters topstyle or bradsoft into Google. Send the check for $1,000 to: [address removed]"
Now, obviously this guy has a loose wire, and his threat is laughable - if he ever tried to file suit, he would be in hot water for extortion. But being a one-man-show, it's incredibly hard for me to spend time dealing with people like this - yet I have to, because their posts to public newsgroups show up in Google searches for my software.

Does anyone else have to deal with this kind of garbage, and if so, how do you handle it?

Anonymity Online and its Consequences

Anonymity Online and its Consequences 02/14/2004 09:09 PM
NY Times: Amazo n Glitch Unmasks War of Reviewers. The weeklong glitch, which Amazon fixed after outed reviewers complained, provided a rare glimpse at how writers and readers are wielding the online reviews as a tool to promote or pan a book — when they think no one is watching. This thought-provoking story is a window into an increasingly relevant problem: how to deal with anonymous speech.

The Anonymity Project has launched a web site that provides a description of
research areas, interviews with project members, and other project
information. Although the project is cross-disciplinary, it is based at the
University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. EPIC is a collaborator. The project
consists of three broad research streams -- the nature and value of
identity, anonymity and authentication; the constitutional and legal aspects
of anonymity; and technologies that identify, anonymize and authenticate.
Research results will be made publicly available on the web site. Visit "On the Identity Trail: Understanding the Importance of Anonymity and Authentication in a Networked Society". This has been added to Privacy Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Orb starts rocking

Orb starts rocking 02/07/2005 01:52 AM

comprave.jpgSo we (Carl Wescott - my partner and I) go to visit Ted Shelton of Orb Networks yesterday. Man oh man - this company is hot.

Their technology scales your media to fit into your device, bandwidth and context - in real-time. TV, music, images - all sent to wherever you are - and adapted to your device - both in size and bandwith.

So needless to say their interface sucks and they're the PERFECT partner for us - to build DLAs with! We can provide Orb the coolest, dyanmic, persoanlzied, sociable, personally pbulished interafces around. Hot compelling interfaces - I'm totally psyched about working with Ted and Orb.

And Ted has some KILLER ideas about how we ALL can benefit from Orb. But first things first - watch for Orb to ship - mainstream.

Arrived at ETech. Lots of people and not enough time to blog. The Internet in my room isn't working, but hopefully, they'll fix it today. Today is the Digital Democracy Teach-In. Should be fun. I'll try to post notes.

A few one liners I scribbled in my notebook:

"I wanted to be a revolutionary, but all I got was this stupid blog."

"I'm not an academic, but I play one on my blog."

OK, you Mac users have been telling us this forever, but this is the first time I've seen anyone run the numbers:

Are Mac Users Smarter Than PC Users
[...]
In other words, if we knew that Mac users, as a group, were significantly better users of written English than PC users, then we'd have a presumptive basis for ranking the probable "smartness" of two people about whom we only know that one uses a Mac and the other a PC.

I'll post a well-worded rebuttal as soon as I fig-yer out how this here Intarweb works.

Via SlashDot which, according to the article, operates at a 5th grade level (that estimate sounds a bit high to me).

The Dance of Death starts

The Dance of Death starts 03/19/2003 10:25 PM
I listened to Bush's speech tonight with increasing disgust. The lost opportunities, had he been more interested in disarming Hussein, and less interested in proving that the US can dominate everybody, sickened me. Made me want to send him a pretzel. More lies, repeated over and over again. And lest anyone take seriously his declaration that military action could be avoided if the Tyrant Hussein fled the country, American officials in the Middle East are already saying "Even if Saddam Hussein leaves Iraq within 48 hours, as President Bush demanded, allied forces plan to move north into Iraqi territory," Bush is determined to get his war, and Hussein is determined to give it to him. And, as Marine Major Chris Hughes, said, "The first image of this war will define the conflict," Now we have marines in charge of the most important part of the war, what America's image is, for George Bush's re-election campaign. So the dance of the death starts. For my image, one of the works of the great Mexican artist, Jose Posada, seemed particularly appropriate today. Click to see a larger version....

TiVO starts to branch out

TiVO starts to branch out 06/09/2004 05:54 AM
Tivo launches download service.

Tivo launches download service

Blurring the lines between PVRs and VOD (video on demand), Tivo has annouced that they will begin a new service whereby Tivo customers will be able to download content (movies and music) to their Tivo units. Tivo is calling this something different from broadcast tv, cable and satellite. No pricing or launch date has been announced.

This is a critical move for Tivo because their business partner, DirecTV, recently sold off their 3.4 million shares in Tivo, causing the stock to drop by 14%.

One of the stumbling blocks for DVD or HDTV-quality downloads over the Internet is that many people consider a minimum of 5 Mb/sec. for the broadband connection. In Japan and Korea, the average broadband connection is 15 Mb/sec. and can go up to 100 Mb/sec. with fiber optic services, but in the US, the average is still 1.5 Mb/sec. at best. [PVRblog]

One thing Gen is missing in this post is that TiVO bought Strangeberry - remember?  TiVO is the Kleenex of PVRs.  I know that may be hard for Gen, Matt and the rest of the PVRBloggers to realize - since they focus so close in on all the competition and upcoming technologies - but to most people out there - it's not called PVR - it's called TiVO.

So despite the slow bandwidth, despite the stock price drop, despite all the gloom and doom - TiVO continues to be THE brand of PVRs.  Any serious competition will not only need to equal the TiVO user experience, but surpass it - and that won't be easy.
