Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough
Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough
05/20/2004 01:05 PMAfter the bubble popped, many VCs practically stopped all investing.
In the cases where they did invest, they often put in
incre
dibly onerous terms that gave the VCs a lot more power than they
might have deserved (though, some VCs will disagree with this). Of
course, now that times are getting better, people are saying that
VCs are
tightening terms again - so as not to get burned. What
this really means is that many VCs are looking for any reason to make
the terms more in their favor. Times are bad? Terms need to be
tighter. Times are good? Terms need to be tighter to make sure they
don't go bad again. The obvious response, of course, is that it
is the VC's job to get good terms - but if those terms cause
more problems, it's a strategic mistake. If entrepreneurs feel that
their VCs are ripping them off, it defeats much of the purpose of
getting that VC money in the first place. Besides, as the startup
market picks up again (as it's doing) this becomes less of an issue.
Already, we hear stories about VCs offering ridiculous valuations to
companies because they're in a "hot" space. When competition for the
hot startups increases, VCs are suddenly willing to make the terms a
bit more reasonable.

Longhorn Could Be A Tough Sell
Longhorn Could Be A Tough Sell
03/30/2005 04:59 PMNews.com has a huge article this morning
about Microsoft’s Windows new operating system being released
next year code-named Longhorn. The article makes several points, in a
nutshell, here they are. Microsoft has had so many delays with
Longhorn that it’s forced them to keep updating the current
Windows XP. It’s gotten to the point where XP has become the
most stable of any Windows system to date. Several of the
new features in Longhorn are supposedly being dropped to get
the OS out the door next year. Plus several of Longhorn’s
features were or will about to be implemented into Windows XP to
handle security problems or feature requests.
Microsoft has handled this problem before. They’ve taken a
product that is full featured and contains all the bells and whistles
it can possibly contain and made normally intelligent users spend
hundreds of dollars on an un-needed upgrade. They call it Office
Suite. The article expects Microsoft to hit the PR road later this
year and start telling it’s users why Windows XP is not good
enough for you. The key will be which features they leave in
Longhorn and which are taken out.

The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia
The Los Angeles Times goes multimedia
03/21/2003 12:14 AM The Los Angeles Times goes
multimedia. For the past few weeks, the LA Times has begun a
significant push into offering video, audio, and interactive Flash on
their website. One of the most interesting aspects is that the paper
has moved one step beyond simply replaying AP Television clips as many
sites have done; the LA Times writers are stand before the cameras and
microphones themselves and report stories in a stuttering,
non-hairsprayed, introverted demeanor that I find very refreshing,
though so far I have gleaned very little additional information from
it. When does (or can) this mode of journalism on the web rise above
gimmickry or 'just because we can' and add value to a written article?
Can video/tv news rise above mere spectacle?
