Understanding The Balance Of Growing Up
Online

Henry Jenkins' latest article for MIT's Technology Review does an excellent job pointing out that when it comes to how people view children and the internet, it always seem to fall into two completely opposite camps: the Myth of the Columbine Generation and the Myth of the Digital Generation. Either the technology is evil, dragging kids down into a life of pornography and violence or the internet is wonderful, opening up new worlds and a wide variety of communication options. The reality, of course, is somewhere in the middle. Like we've said plenty of times, the technology can be used for both good and bad, and that doesn't change no matter how old you are. However, it's much easier to focus on just one aspect, and Jenkins talks about a research report that looks carefully at both the benefits and the risks of children being online and shows that things really aren't that bad. Certainly some kids end up seeing pornographic images online, but most appear to be mature enough to handle it in a reasonable manner. However, a newspaper picked up the study the following day, focusing in on only the most sensational (and out of context) statement from the report, pointing out just how many kids between the age of 9 and 19 had seen porn online. Now, age 9 to 19 is a pretty wide range, and even in the age before the internet, you could bet that as kids approached 19 a fair amount of them had come across some kind of pornography at some point. When the study broke down the findings by age group, they're not quite so shocking, and the reactions to the porn (most thinking it was no big deal and simply closing down the site) suggest that they're mature enough, and have been raised well enough to handle such situations appropriately when they come across it.

Is Online Porn Growing Up?

Is Online Porn Growing Up? 12/10/2003 01:53 PM
CNN has discovered that online porn is big business, which is probably news to you if you just happened to stumble onto this here internet thing. Otherwise, you might have heard that billions are being made in online porn. While there are still a lot of small, independent (some might say "sketchy") players in the space, as it matures, larger players are emerging. It's also raising certain legal questions, and some are saying that the Supreme Court may need to revisit the porn/obscenity issue for the first time in decades. While the last big ruling focused on community standards, that causes problems when the "community" can be anywhere. Meanwhile, it seems like porn is becoming so mainstream in some areas, that it's not even considered quite as taboo in polite company any more. That, at least, appears to be the goal of sites like Fleshbot and Variety's new "Porning Report".

Juice Boost Scam Keeps Growing And
Growing...
08/17/2004 05:02 PM
A couple weeks ago we had the story about the not really free, not really broadband, free broadband scam from a company named Juice Boost. Broadband Reports has an update today about how the scam/joke/pyrami d scheme/something is taking on an incredible life of its own. The scam, of course, involves some sort of non-existent accelerator software and claims that even the most non-tech-savvy individual should realize are completely made up (free broadband connections over telephone lines and a regular modem that never go down and they'll pay you if you receive a spam message or if the connection drops among other, equally ridiculous claims). Looking for any kind of details on the company turn up nothing but more affiliates (some of whom have even sent out press releases or promises of bars of silver if you sign up). The problem, of course, is that they're promising affiliates lots of cash for signing up more people (limited to the first... oh, 80 million) so the affiliate spammers are coming out of the woodwork taking the ridiculous promises of Juice and "boosting" them even higher. Hopefully, this is all just a demonstration of how ridiculous most affiliate programs are, but that seems unlikely.

Taylorism Gone Mad Or A Better Work-Life
Balance?
04/15/2004 03:32 PM
It's really no surprise that this is happening, but as technology continues to get better at recording all sorts of things about us, a new discussion is opening up about employers monitoring employees. Even though plenty of studies (for years and years and years) have shown that too much employee monitoring actually harms productivity that won't stop this new generation from trying. What's interesting here is the way it's being spun - not as a direct way of improving productivity (modern Taylorism), but as a better way for employers to help employees impro ve their work life balance. In other words, the article suggests that employers can monitor employees' cholesterol levels and stress levels and realize when they need a break. They (way too easily) dismiss the idea of privacy by pointing out that privacy doesn't matter any more (uh... says who?). Even worse, no where do they explain why it makes sense for the employer to be doing this kind of monitoring and keeping this kind of data. It seems perfectly reasonable for employees to monitor themselves this way, but it's not clear why an employer should have any need to know this information.
