Microsoft Windows Media Player 10

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 09/03/2004 08:18 AM
The most striking change to Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, the much-awaited upgrade to the player/jukebox that ships on most new PCs, is its dramatic cosmetic overhaul. Windows Media Player (WMP) no longer feels like a freebie utility thrown in with the OS (think Notepad), but is an application you'll actually want to use. By giving you easy access to all of your multimedia files (music, photos, and video) and helping you accomplish the tasks you're likely to want to do with them, WMP 10 at least equals — and in our estimation surpasses — the current leader in the field, MusicMatch Jukebox 9.

iRiver H300 Series Player Pricing

iRiver H300 Series Player Pricing 05/28/2004 11:00 AM

iriverh300_jump.jpg imageDPReview has a little more information about iRiver's upcoming H300 series players, with much of the same information we reported previously, but this time with a price: ¥47,800 (~$430) for the H320 20 GB version and ¥59,800 (~$540) for the H340 40GB version. That's more expensive than the iPod, even, but you get a color screen, 16 hour battery life, and a device that meets the USB On The Go specification (USB Host, basically) so that you can connect almost any USB device to the unit and transfer files back and forth without a computer. (Thanks, Junki!)

On Wednesday, the European Court judge overseeing the European Union vs. Microsoft antitrust case did what many observers thought he would not. He denied Microsoft's request that the ordered remedies (including the unbundling of Windows Media Player from Windows) be postponed. Whether or not Microsoft appeals his denial, the Redmond software giant said it will deliver to European OEMs starting in January a Windows-Media-Player-free version of Windows. Microsoft also will publish communications protocols, including some heretofore-unpublished Windows Server ones, as part of the judge's order.

"The next version of Microsoft Corp's Windows Media Player looks set to be the company's answer to Apple Inc's iTunes and RealNetworks Inc's music services, featuring a built-in music and movie store for the first time," Computer Business Review Online reports. "Microsoft released a "technical beta" of WMP 10 this week, and said it features a streamlined interface and a Digital Media Mall comprised of storefronts provided by partners Napster LLC, MusicNow LLC and CinemaNow Inc. The company is also saying that WMP simplifies the process of transferring tracks from PCs to portable devices and synchronizing playlists. WMP 10 will automatically detect compatible devices and synchronize via a new Multimedia Transfer Protocol."

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design
