05/25/2004 01:13 PM
Push-to-talk has become the must-have technology for cell phones; new Motorola equipment offers support over GPRS, 1xRTT, and WLAN: PTT provides an intercom-like service immediately, without dialing, for members of a group. Nextel owned the market until recently. Motorola's technology is in testing, and they expect to offer support over a large variety of other cell data standards, too, such as EDGE....

Future Brings Push-to-Talk-over-Wi-Fi

Future Brings Push-to-Talk-over-Wi-Fi 08/11/2004 05:14 PM
I thought we'd have flying cars and live on the moon, but apparently the future brings Wi-Fi walkie-talkies: Some speculation on the future availability of the revenue-enhancing push-to-talk service available over cell networks and pioneered by Nextel moving to Wi-Fi. With PTT, you have a group that you communicate with immediately, walkie-talkie style, by pushing a button on the phone. There's obviously no good reason that the underlying carrier method has to be cell based: an Internet gateway and a Wi-Fi chip could allow this kind of instant routing over any authenticated Wi-Fi hotspot or home/office network. The piece doesn't make it clear whether the FCC is approving Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi PTT or hybrids--Wi-Fi or cell on either end....

push2talkb.jpg imagePCWorld's Michael S. Lasky reviews Nextel's newest Push To Talk service called 'NextMail,' a sort of "Push To Email" service that allows subscribers to record short voice clips with their phone that are then emailed to an individual as a Windows Media file (or optional MP3). It looks pretty interesting, if a little convoluted (but what cellular application isn't?)

The NextMail service is available to most Nextel subscribers, depending on service plan.

Nokia Ships Rugged 5140 Sports Phone,
First With Push-To-Talk
06/23/2004 12:14 PM

nokia_5140.gif imageNokia has begun shipping the new 5140 camera phone, aimed at "outdoor and sports-minded consumers." Even better, the rugged phone is Nokia's first push-to-talk phone, so hopefully we'll see it picked up by Sprint or Nextel as an option. As for the fitness part, Nokia has included some software to like stopwatches, a 'Fitness Coach' personal training program, and rugged Xpress-on shells -- one of which even adds GPS capabilities. Sounds interesting, but I think we'll wait to pass judgement until we can play around with one. Also, did someone punch Nokia's designer in the eye the day they came up with the 5140? Maybe they were embarrassed to say they got in a fight or something, so they just went into work anyway and sort of blindly fucked around in AutoCad or whatever until their boss told them they could go home.
