England (Reuters) -- An unexplained radio signal from deep space could -- just might be -- contact from an alien civilization, New Scientist magazine reported on Thursday. The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto Rico.

There are other explanations besides extraterrestrial contact that may explain the signal. New Scientist said the signal could be generated by a previously unknown astronomical phenomenon or even be a by-product from the telescope itself. But the mystery beam has excited astronomers across the world.

"If they can see it four, five or six times it really begins to get exciting," Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of Bath in western England told the magazine.

“In February 2003, astronomers involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) pointed the massive radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, at around 200 sections of the sky. The same telescope had previously detected unexplained radio signals at least twice from each of these regions, and the astronomers were trying to reconfirm the findings. The team has now finished analysing the data, and all the signals seem to have disappeared. Except one, which has got…

SETI@home spots unusual signal... or not

SETI@home spots unusual signal... or not 09/03/2004 04:34 AM
David Pescovitz: SETI@home has turned up an unexplained radio signal from 1000 light years away that's, well, unexplained. From New Scientist:
“It’s the most interesting signal from SETI@home,” says Dan Werthimer, a radio astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and the chief scientist for SETI@home. “We’re not jumping up and down, but we are continuing to observe it.”

Named SHGb02+14a, the signal has a frequency of about 1420 megahertz. This happens to be one of the main frequencies at which hydrogen, the most common element in the universe, readily absorbs and emits energy.

Some astronomers have argued that extraterrestrials trying to advertise their presence would be likely to transmit at this frequency, and SETI researchers conventionally scan this part of the radio spectrum.

Update: The BBC followed up with a report quoting researchers who say that the news above was blown out of proportion and there is no signal. Nothing to hear here. Move along. (cue X-Files theme) Link

SETI finds suspect signal 09/04/2004 03:37 PM

The folks in the SETI project are not real happy with a reporters mis-quoted of a possible signal they have found. It is true that a signal has been found and is on the suspect list but that is about as far as they are willing to go at this time. For the full details straight from the horses mouth read the release from SETI then read the distortion from CNN.

I don't usually post links to regular old XXX porn sites on BoingBoing, but this one -- well, it's not regular. The kitsch is so thick you'll need a shovel -- cracked me up too hard to pass up. Promises "hot space babes," "celebrity beauties exposed to intergalactic invaders... alien monsters, galactic sex training, and more" -- shot with the lowest production values this side of the twelve colonies. Don't miss the poster for the site's remake of It Came from Outer Space. Warning: gratuitous purple appendages, much spurting of green liquid; probably about the least worksafe thing ever linked to from this blog. Link (thanks, Invi sible Cowgirl)

Home from Space

Home from Space 02/16/2004 04:08 PM

It's always amazing to see your own neighborhood from out the space.  Below is a picture of my home using Acme Mapper (via Esther Dyson).

The red circle is where my house is.  What's funny is that I never been to the island across from my house and I am looking at it through a satellite's lense.  Too bad there was nothing in the lagoon when the photos were taken.  Oy, I am less than a pixel.

Space Is Our Home, not a Program

Space Is Our Home, not a Program 07/09/2004 09:37 PM
“…For decades the space debate has focused too much on exploration. The exploration of space is valuable in and of itself, but the most important reason for exploring space—the reason that robots alone simply don’t count—can be summed up in one word: settlement. This time, we go to stay. Even if science was the only reason to go, the best science is performed by onsite scientists with their instruments, not by onsite instruments without their scientists. But science isn’t the only, or even the best, reason to go. Survival and prosperity are the fundamental reasons, and these are worth any price.”
