DanceMob Redux

DanceMob Redux 12/19/2004 03:31 PM
Following our forays during the Republican National Convention, many in our DanceMob declared that dancing in the streets had been so much gosh-darned fun that it would be a good thing to do even without a targeted political motive. I agree. There is something mysteriously liberating about making a fool of yourself in public. Dancing anywhere is good. Dancing someplace unexpected is better. Dancing like we were in this video clip is sweet indeed. I wonder if it's ever apolitical though... I came away from our previous experience believing that in America at this time, all dancing is revolutionary. It really does feel to me that this election is more about culture than policy. There are two primary cultures presently at odds in America. One of them is inclined to dance, the other is not. During the Convention, I found us creating a kind of litmus test. It was very easy to see in peoples' reaction to us which side of that divide they were on. But it also seemed to make some converts. While, on some faces, the sour pucker only deepened as we drew closer, there were many others who smiled and drew encouragement from our good energy. So, like many of you, I think we ought to do it again. Indeed, I think we should start making a regular practice of it, sort of like the dancing equivalent of the Critical Mass bicyclists. I'm arbitrarily selecting the 3rd Friday of every month. (Which may have to be seasonal, but we'll see...) Thus, I hope you will join me this Friday evening for a new DanceMob action in New York City. Here's the deal: PLACE: Zocalo, on the Food Concourse of Grand Central Station DATE: Friday, October 22 TIME: 6:00 pm. (That is, we'll start to gather at 6 and probably head out at around 7:00, to be realistic.) Zocalo is a good but not great Mexican restaurant in the basement of Grand Central Station. Their main attraction, aside from being central to good dancing territory, is a pretty swell blood orange margarita. Suck down a few of those and you'll be willing to dance anywhere. It's hard to say about the weather, of course. I wanted to do it last Friday and was dissuaded by the forecast. (Fortunately, as it turns out. There was a bleak rain falling just as we would have ventured out.) The current forecast is more promising, but if it turns vile on us, we can always just dance in Grand Central Station, something I've always wanted to do. Those of you did this before know what a hoot it is and need little persuading. Those of you who haven't should come and experience it. I'm pretty sure you won't regret it. If you have any questions or suggestions, please give me a call on 917/863-2037. Or e-mail me at barlow@eff.org. You can also contact our incredibly dedicated Subcommandte Scott Piscitelli at 646/342-5077 or spmonkeyking@yahoo.com....

John Perry Barlow's Trial Commences

John Perry Barlow's Trial Commences 12/17/2004 06:42 PM
John Perry Barlow's trial commences and is commented upon by Seth David Schoen. A most interesting paragraph was: "First follow-up question: If you think a bottle contains an improvised explosive device, is it appropriate to shake it? No, that's almost the worst thing you can do. Second: Is it appropriate to open the bottle? No, that's the worst thing you can do. The defense then argued that Ms. Ramos could not really have believed that the ibuprofen bottle in question contained an improved[sic] explosive device, because she had testified that, on removing it from Barlow's bag, she became suspicious of it, then shook it, and then opened it. These actions were the most dangerous actions she could possibly have taken if she really believed that the bottle might contain explosives..." Followup for this post.

General Barlow's dancin' platoons
planning to boogie at the RNC

General Barlow's dancin' platoons
planning to boogie at the RNC
08/29/2004 10:41 AM
Cory Doctorow: General John Perry Barlow continues to plan his mad protest of the RNC in which hundreds of secret agents dressed like civilians will converge on a public, off-limits-to-protestors space, turn on a boom box, and DANCE LIKE HELL:
2. TEXT MESSAGE COORDINATION

I have created a text-message "loop" for us on the Ruckus site. It's called "dancemob." This will enable all of us to receive cell phone text messages from one another, noting current platoon location, likely eruption zones, police movements and temperament, etc. In order to participate, you will need to do the following:

-- Send the text "join dancemob" to 8762.

-- Once you are joined, you can send messages up to about 150 characters to your loop by texting dancemob: [your message here]" to 8762. For instance, if there were a loop named "PeaceMakers", you would text "PeaceMakers: meet now at 32nd and 6th".

In addition, I recommend that at least some of you in each platoon register your phone to receive bulletins from Ruckus with breaking news and logistical updates from the streets of New York City during the RNC.

RNC-NYC: report from John Perry Barlow's
dance protests
09/01/2004 05:11 PM
Xeni Jardin: Follow-up on this previous BoingBoing post from Cory: Link. As he steps out the door to "lead another sortie of dancing fools out into the streets of Manhattan," John Perry Barlow reports on the dance protests he's been organizing this week in NYC:
After four missions, Dancing in the Streets has exceeded my fondest expectations. It was my objective, as it usually is, that we afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, and this is what we have been doing by all appearances. We generally make the credentialed Republicans we encounter visibly nervous and spread good will and humor to most of the rest, including the police, who could well use it at the moment. People dig it when they see other people dancing in incongruous places. The most surprising people will join in, falling on the dance with a kind of hunger.

Republicans were hard to encounter at first. They are being quarantined behind the blue membrane of the NYPD (for whom my affection and respect has only increased through this experience). In addition, they spend much of their time inside the Garden having a lot less fun than we were. (As several of them told us.) Levels of engagement have increased with fine-tuning. The results vary, ranging from the Stepford husband whom we made so nervous that he walked into a plate glass window to the sweet young delegate from Oklahoma who tore off his tie and joined us for the balance of the evening.

We've had many interactions with the police. They certainly weren't interested in arresting us, though they kept us moving. Several of them said wistfully they wanted to join us. In general they only interfered because they are trying to maintain as familiar a peace as they can. Major variations from standard reality worry them. But not enough to go maximum on us.

Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AM
Thanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.
