03/14/2005 04:02 PMContrary to the view that Microsoft has totally abandoned anything
older than Windows XP, they’ve released new patches for the old
operating systems. It’s a welcome sign that they realize that
whether or not the official support for Win 9x/ME has ended, the
people still running them won’t be part of the security problem
simply because their OS hasn’t been patched….

Adobe releases patches for Acrobat and

Adobe releases patches for Acrobat and
Reader
06/17/2005 03:18 PMAdobe Systems on Wednesday rolled out patches for security
vulnerabilities found in Adobe Reader 7.0 and 7.0.1, and in Adobe
Acrobat 7.0 and 7.0.1.
The hole in the products, referred to as an XML External Entity
vulnerability, under certain circumstances allows XML scripts to be
used to discover a user's local files.
According to Adobe officials, the vulnerability is within the Adobe
Reader control. If an XML script is embedded in JavaScript, it is
possible to discover the existence of local files, according to a
security advisory from the company. An attacker could then maliciously
use the gathered information. But the statement pointed out that the
local files can be found only if the attacker knows the complete file
names and paths in advance of such an attack.
The vulnerability impacts Acrobat and Reader running on Windows and
Mac platforms.
Adobe recommends that Reader and Acrobat for Windows customers
download the updates provided on the Adobe Web site
here.
The company said it will release an update for the Mac OS versions
shortly. Until the Mac patch is available, Adobe advises end-users to
disable any Acrobat JavaScript. This should protect systems from the
vulnerability.

The Problem With Monthly Security
Patches
12/09/2003 09:45 PMSo much for that plan. Back in October, we joked about Microsoft's
plans to
make
their operating system more secure by patching it less often. The
convoluted thinking was that if they spent more time on specific
monthly (second Tuesday of every month) patches, they could get them
right and not always be frantic about coming out with new patches all
the time. Of course, there's one fatal flaw in this plan, and that's
that security holes (and those who publicize and/or exploit them)
don't work on a monthly schedule. So, while it's the second Tuesday
of December today,
there's no patch from Microsoft. They're making it sound like
it's a good thing, but that ignores the few "critical" security
updates that came out over the last couple months when "off-schedule"
security holes were found.
