digital music players
09/23/2004 11:15 AM
Xeni Jardin: Sony confirmed yesterday that it plans to add native MP3 support to digital music players, in a move that will likely help the products compete more effectively with more popular competitors like Apple's iPod. Until now, the Sony devices were designed to only play files encoded with Sony's proprietary Atrac music file format.
The shift from reliance on its proprietary format will begin with flash memory-based players, the electronics giant said, but plans are still being finalized on how and when products will add MP3 support. CNET News.com affiliate ZDNet France first reported of the change in Sony's strategy for the European market. U.S. representatives said the company is making similar plans here.

Talking About The Latest Digital Music
Store Messes
09/03/2004 03:05 AM
Over at IT Conversations, Ernest Miller has is running a new web-based radio show called "The Importance of... Law and IT." The latest show (the second one he's done) talks about Apple v. Real v. Microsoft in the digital music download store space... and I'm on the show as a last minute panelist. It was a fun conversation, and I'm probably removing myself from future shows by criticizing my own performance, but listening back over it there are two glaring problems with the show we did today. First, and most importantly, is the lack of someone from within the industry. This isn't Ernest's fault, as he tried very, very hard to get someone to appear, and I think my spot on the show was to fill in for the lack of anyone from within the industry being willing to come on the show. As it stands, while an interesting conversation on what's happening in the space, there's pretty much universal agreement among all the panelists. We might nitpick over definitions or where certain things are going, but on the whole, we all seem to believe that this whole Apple vs. Real vs. Microsoft battle is sort of a minor diversion in the overall effort to redefine the future of how people create, obtain, distribute and listen to music. Which leads into my second critique: this really is a minor skirmish in the larger scale of things, and we should have made more of an effort to frame this particular debate in a much larger debate about the overall industry. The show still is worth listening to, but I wish I had thought more to frame the overall debate better. Still, considering it's only the second show, and knowing the quality of Ernest's regular blog, it's clear this show has plenty of potential in the future.

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With 06/11/2004 12:55 PM
In early 2003 a group of the top brick-and-mortar music retail shops announc ed plans for a unified downloadable music store that got lots of attention. We were a bit skeptical, assuming (like most companies) they wouldn't really want to cannibalize their existing business models and would come up with something that was expensive and weak. They didn't even get that far. Without ever launching, they've pulled the plug on the program, claiming that there's just not enough business in online music sales for it to matter to them. While it's nice that there's not "yet another" online music store offering music that won't work with any music you buy from any other music download store, this is quite a statement on how these stores view downloadable music. Downloadable music is much more of a threat to the record stores' business models than the record labels, yet the stores have mostly decided to put their heads in the sand and assume it's not worth worrying about. Someone ought to send them a copy of < i>The Innovator's Dilemma.

The Beatles have been one of the biggest holdouts in releasing their catalog for sale online, and the lack of such mega-hits as "Let it Be" and "Yesterday" has been cited as a major weakness for fledgling, Web-based music stores. Negotiators for the Beatles have talked with several companies, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft Corp's MSN, which is expected to open an Internet music store late this summer, people familiar with the talks told Reuters.
