Historical origins of obesity

Historical origins of obesity 05/27/2004 02:52 AM
Long, interesting Harvard Magazine article about the historical shifts in diet and lifestyle that led to America's obesity epidemic.
"We are not adapted to handle fast-acting carbohydrates," Ludwig continues. "Glucose is the gold standard of energy metabolism. The brain is exquisitely dependent on having a continuous supply of glucose: too low a glucose level poses an immediate threat to survival. [But] too high a level causes damage to tissues, as with diabetes. The body is designed to keep blood glucose within a tight range, and it does this beautifully, even with extreme nutrient ratios: we can survive indefinitely on a diet of 60 percent carbohydrates and 20 percent fat, or 20 percent carbohydrates and 60 percent fat. But we never [before] had to assimilate a heavy dose of high-glycemic carbohydrates."

Recreating Historical Monuments,

Recreating Historical Monuments,
Virtually
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
I'm sure similar projects are being worked on elsewhere, but it's nice to know that people are creating virtual replicas of historical monuments that let people "go back in time" at the click of a mouse. From the article, it sounds like the team in this case is paying great attention to detail, making sure that the representation is as accurate as possible. While not taking away from the value of actually visiting historical monuments, it would seem that this makes for a nice complement for people who want to compare what may have been with what's there today. Also, it allows people nowhere near these historical sites to check them out.

Historical Statistics of the United States
http://www.csep.ucr.edu/ HSUS/HSUS.html

The goal of the project is to produce an updated, expanded, and thoroughly revised edition in print and electronic formats of various historical statistics of the United States, to be collected from the Historical Statistics of the United States, Millennial Edition, Colonial Times to The Present (Cambridge University Press). The Historical Statistics of the United States was first published in 1949 by the Bureau of the Census with the advice and assistance of the Social Science Research Council. A second and much larger edition appeared in 1960 under the same auspices. The third edition, Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970, Bicentennial Edition, was published by the Bureau in 1975 and was expanded to two volumes. In the year 2005 Cambridge University Press will publish the fourth, millennial, edition of this classic reference work. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Peter Caputa unveils one of his secret weapons.

How to make money from Events.

This is just the beginning of a new era - where smart entreprenuers like Peter show us how to make money from micro-content.

Congrats to Peter and the WhizSpark team!

No wonder he's been so busy. But NOT too busy to help start OpenEvents!

Here's Peter's post.....

Welcome to the Unveiling of WhizSpark's secret Sauce. Most of you have seen the social network - mailing list tools - event directory part of WhizSpark.

And then you thought... "Do they really think they will make any money from that site?". The answer is probably no. That won't pay the bills or bring us to our next liquidation event. Unless, of course, we follow the monetization path of Friendster and MySpace of littering your screen with ads.

So, what will?

(Take a deep breath b4 you read this next sentence)

We are providing incentivized viral word of mouth permission based email marketing and branded hosted event websites with social networking functionality as promotion services for event planners, venues, charitable organizations, political campaigns, business seminars, musicians, conferences, etc etc..

I was waiting until I could show it, to talk about it. Because it is obviously not that easy to explain.

We are pleased to announce our first 3 big events/sales:

Edd ie Kennison Foundation's Celebrity Fashion Show, Dinner, Silent & Live Auction, Comedy Show.

Wor mtownnightlife.com 2005 Madden VideoGame Tournament.

Red 1888's Model Search Competition by Spothound.com (R-rated)

So, if you know anyone that qualifies as a customer (see the aforementioned list above), please send me an email or them an email. We'd love some referrals.

And if you are interested in any of those events, let me know and I can hook you up.

Wow. Spartacus Educational is a masterwork of hyperlinked history with a rather eclectic list of focus topics that can suck you in and never let go. Start anywhere, and then just click, and click, and click...

In light of recent events, you might begin, if you wish, with a brush-up on the 1914 assassinat ion of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, and from there go on to find out more about the Black Hand secret society responsible for the killing. You may attempt to sidestep politics by going to cartoonists, or U.S. novelists and poets, but you will find that the site is organized against a backdrop of world politics (viewed chiefly from a British perspective), a point of view that weaves its own endlessly looping and mesmerizing mesh.
