Glucose-sensing contact lenses

Glucose-sensing contact lenses 03/23/2005 01:19 PM
David Pescovitz: Bioengineers at the University of Maryland are developing contact lenses that change color in response to changes in blood sugar. The approach would benefit diabetics who traditionally use skin prick tests to monitor their glucose levels. One of scientist Chris Geddes's prototypes requires the wearer to use a handheld device that flashes a blue light at the eye and measures the glow. From New Scientist:
Geddes' team is looking at several options for users. Rather than having the entire contact lens glow, tiny sensor spots could be placed around the contact lens. Those spots could monitor glucose, as well as sodium, cholesterol and potassium...

The group is also working on a contact lens that would change colour like a traffic light - from green to yellow to orange to red - enabling the wearer or an observer to determine a broader range of blood sugar level, from too low to too high.

Sony Cybershot DSC-P150 Lenses

Sony Cybershot DSC-P150 Lenses 08/03/2004 09:03 AM

You know, I don't know why it's legal for id to release Doom 3 during the workweek. Some of us have to get up, you know?

Anyway, I was looking at the Sony Cybershot DSC-P150 -- the new one with a 7.2-megapixel resolutions; we mentioned it a couple weeks ago -- and just noticed for the first time that you can replace the lenses on this model. I don't know if that's a new thing for this body of Cybershot, but either way it's pretty great. The P150 just went from 'considering' to 'probably' on my personal buy list (I'm in the market for a camera).

Sorry the picture is so small. Apparently Sony isn't as proud of their lens as I am.

Update: Reader Chris Reinhardt points out these lenses likely just screw on over the existing lens. Better than nothing, I guess.

Contact Lenses Report Glucose Levels

Contact Lenses Report Glucose Levels 03/23/2005 06:50 AM

glitter_lenses.jpgChris Geddes at the University of Maryland is working on a pair of contact lenses able to change appearance based on the wearer's glucose levels.

Moisture from the tear ducts contains glucose that binds with the molecules of boronic acid [added to disposable contact lenses], with the reaction causing fluorescence.
A handheld unit shines a blue light into the eye and measures the resulting glow to tell the user their blood sugar levels. Another project in the works would allow the lenses to change colors more dramatically, from red to yellow to green allowing the wearer or observer a more obvious indication that they're headed towards insulin shock by looking in the mirror.

Hot pepper spray reverses "permanent"
loss of smell

The cold remedy Zicam (which I swear by) has been under attack for possibly causing permanent anosmia (loss of the sense of smell). But a new product on the market called sinus Buster, made from capsaicin (the ingredient that makes chili peppers hot) might reverse anosmia when you squirt it up your nose.
"When my husband ordered the sinus buster over the internet I was skeptical. But I said okay I’ll give it a try. As soon as we got it I used it that night and the next day I noticed I could smell certain odors. I couldn't believe it. The first thing I smelled was my daughter coming home after a night of partying, and I could smell cigarette smoke all over her. I had to bring her coat out to the garage because the smoke odor was so strong. Then my daughter told me that’s how she always smells after going out, but I never smelled the smoke before. It's absolutely amazing," Anderson added.
I've always had a pretty bad sense of smell. Maybe I should give this stuff a try. Link

Second Sight - PC Surveillance Software
http://www.iquesoft -online.com/pdssight.htm

Second Sight is a full-featured local and remote Windows surveillance application that keeps a complete record of all activities on your computer. Business managers can use Second Sight to monitor employees' activities, and parents can use it to keep track of their children's Internet travels, even from a different location. With Second Sight, you can determine which computer user is making inappropriate or costly use of local and Internet resources. As the amount of Internet content increases daily, so does the potential for abuse. The software works invisibly in the background, totally hidden from the computer's users. The program records the names of all open windows and web pages, and records all keys that were pressed. Second Sight can capture screen images, web cam and video camera stills, save them in its log files in full or compressed format. You can access these logs and images in real-time using any web browser. Optionally, have Second Sight notify you whenever the source PC is online and available for remote access. When reviewing Second Sight's log files, you can see everything that the user saw, and read everything that was typed, as well as perform keyword searches. The program can also be configured to silently e-mail the log files to another computer. This has been added to Privacy Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Security Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide. New technologies create a constant struggle between our security and our privacy ....
