Jane Austen, Bloggist
Jane Austen, Bloggist
10/28/2003 11:06 PM
It occurred that Jane Austen is quite the bloggist. She weaves a
complex tapestry of individual voices and experiences, the vast
majority of which holds little interest for most, but those taken with
her characters' experiences can't help but wonder what they are up to
today. Some are constant companions, others meander in from time to
time only when their experience somehow interacts with those Austen
has chosen to follow.
I find she seldom provides much in the way of description as an
editor, leaving much to the individual experience, interpretation, and
voice of her characters. Take, for example, this passage from
Mansfield Park in which a betrothed Miss Bertram narrates the
approach to her Sotherton-to-be:
Here begins the village. Those cottages are really a disgrace. The
church spire is reckoned remarkably handsome. I am glad the church is
not so close to the great house as often happens in old places. The
annoyance of the bells must be terrible. There is the parsonage: a
tidy-looking house, and I understand the clergyman and his wife are
very decent people. Those are almshouses, built by some of the
family. To the right is the steward's house; he is a very respectable
man. Now we are coming to the lodge-gates; but we have nearly a mile
through the park still. It is not ugly, you see, at this end; there
is some fine timber, but the situation of the house is dreadful. We
go down hill to it for half a mile, and it is a pity, for it would not
be an ill-looking place if it had a better approach."
Miss Crawford [her cousin, of sorts] was not slow to admire; she
pretty well guessed Miss Bertram's feelings, and made it a point of
honour to promote her enjoyment to the utmost. Mrs. Norris [her aunt]
was all delight and volubility; and even Fanny [our heroine] had
something to say in admiration, and might be heard with complacency.
Her eye was eagerly taking in everything within her reach; and after
being at some pains to get a view of the house, and observing that "it
was a sort of building which she could not look at but with respect."
Mansfield Park, a heavier Austen that it is, has been a wonderful
escape during these busy weeks of mostly online experience.
When Jane Austen's novels were published, some readers dismissed them
as "too natural to be interesting." Yet their very true-to-lifeness
helped earn Austen (1775-1817) her place in the literary canon. Nearly
200 years later, many praise what Austen scholar (and obvious fan) Le
Faye calls her ability to create the "sensation that we are visiting
genuine places and joining in the lives of genuine people."
--Publishers Weekly on Deirdre Le Faye's Jane Austen: The World of Her Novels.

Challenge to Stowe
Challenge to Stowe
02/05/2005 09:12 PM
Stowe Boyd and I are going
to do some debate somewhere - hopefully using Marc Eisenstadt's FlashMeeting technology.
BTW as a quick aside - I just found out that
Macromedia charges $7,000 for 2,500 simultaneous users of FlashCom -
the server technology behind FlashMeeting. If any coolio
open source gal or guy is listening - I'd DIE to get an open source
version of FlashCom. I promise i'll hussle the hell out of it - for
you.
Anyway - back to Stowe.
Stowe seems to grok the absurdness of
talking about talking - but what will he say when our Marqui program
starts conversations and memes around actual subjects like "How
Marqui saved me money" or "a Marqui a day - keeps my IT dept.
at bay".
I can't wait to debate Stowe. I'm gonna pull out all my techniques
at public performance, diaphragm support and snide combacks. All the
techniques John Kerry had none of. Ask somebody about the debate Dave
Winer and I did at a Stewart Alsop Agenda conference back in 1988.
:-)
One thing Stowe is right about - I was
iritated with Marqui. And they didn't fire me!
And Stowe is all wigged out that
Marqui would want to sponsor our debate. DUDE - haven't you
gotten the point yet?
ARE YOU SPELLING MARQUI's name right?
Good - then case solved.

The Linux Server Break-in challenge. You will have a server
available on the Internet 96 hours without interruption starting from

This server won't be protected by firewall. There won't be any fake
demons or honeypots as well. It will be running all the services
normally found in a regular Linux distribution and more.
