Looks like Zell Miller's Republican Convention ravings were a little too much even for the Bush team. They disinvited (MSNBC) the angry Georgia senator and his wife from the first family's box of seats during Bush's acceptance speech. Several commenters below a previous post, which pointed to Andrew Sullivan's succinct words about the tirade, have insisted that Miller may have been angry but he was simply telling the truth. Not even close, folks, as Slate's Fred Kaplan observes in this posting that counts the falsehoods, or at least some of them. Meanwhile, Dennis Hastert, speaker of the House of Representatives and second in line for the presidency, has been spewing some incredibly vile garbage about George Soros. More here from Jack Shafer. Truly ugly, but for this crowd truly in character, it seems.

Why is Zell Miller, who prominently links to his idiotic "Beethoven for Babies" bill that says more about his willingness to sell out to Sony than about his grasp of science, a Democrat? His site touts his exempting two Georgia counties from EPA regulations because it would have "a negative impact on the sitting [sic, I think] of new industry and the procurement of federal transportation funding..." He wants to push Bush's right-wing extremist judicial appointments through. He has a barbaric attitude about our treatment of Abu Ghraib prisoners that blames having men and women serve together in "these kinds"...

The Republicans announced their convention keynote speaker this morning. It's ... a Democrat. Sort of. It's Bush supporter Zell Miller, known not so affectionately by many Democrats as Zig Zag Zell for his vacillations between points left and right -- and by John Kerry's campaign for criticizing his Senate colleague after not long ago calling Kerry one of America's "authentic heroes." From the sound of RNC chairman Ed Gillespie's announcement of the keynote today, the GOP will attempt to portray Miller's appearance at the Garden as proof of Bush's Big Tent.

Andrew Sullivan: The Miller Moment. Zell Miller's address will, I think, go down as a critical moment in this campaign, and maybe in the history of the Republican party. I kept thinking of the contrast with the Democrats' keynote speaker, Barack Obama, a post-racial, smiling, expansive young American, speaking about national unity and uplift. Then you see Zell Miller, his face rigid with anger, his eyes blazing with years of frustration as his Dixiecrat vision became slowly eclipsed among the Democrats.

Zell Miller obviously doesn't read Snopes or else he would have known that Kerry didn't ever intend on arming our military with sticks and clubs spitballs. the Martini Republic reminds us that in July snopes debunked the heart of miller's attacks that he delivered in his keynote on wednesday.

Mark Frauenfelder: Former President Jimmy Carter wrote a great letter to Senator Zell Miller, expressing disappointment at Miller's freakish, lie-filled, gut-bustingly hilarious speech at the RNC.

Everyone knows that you were chosen to speak at the Republican Convention because of your being a “Democrat,” and it’s quite possible that your rabid and mean-spirited speech damaged our party and paid the Republicans some transient dividends.

Perhaps more troublesome of all is seeing you adopt an established and very effective Republican campaign technique of destroying the character of opponents by wild and false allegations. The Bush campaign’s personal attacks on the character of John McCain in South Carolina in 2000 was a vivid example. The claim that war hero Max Cleland was a disloyal American and an ally of Osama bin Laden should have given you pause, but you have joined in this ploy by your bizarre claims that another war hero, John Kerry, would not defend the security of our nation except with spitballs. (This is the same man whom you described previously as “one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders -- and a good friend.")
