Every once in a while, the dance between trends and technology achieves an almost perfect state of synchronicity that changes the way we experience the world. This may be one of those times. Among the trends: five years ago, less than 13 percent of Internet users had a digital-music file on their computer. Now, 70 percent of computer users listen to music on their PCs. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Last year, more than 100 million digital photos were taken. More and more people are using PCs to view videos. By the end of this year, 9.5 million TV tuner cards will have shipped.

Microsoft's Portable Media Center

Microsoft's Portable Media Center 10/29/2003 03:28 AM
Microsoft plans to launch software for a new portable media device next year. The device will allow users to listen to music and watch movies on the road. Microsoft hopes the software, called "Portable Media Center," will be an answer to Apple's iPod music device, which is currently the best selling digital music device on the market. The Portable Media Center will be manufactured by Creative, Sanyo and Samsung, and will be on store shelves for the second half of 2004.

Portable Media Center - An Overview

Portable Media Center - An Overview 09/23/2004 01:33 PM
Channel 9 have posted a great video of the new Portable Media Center's. The video is an overview of the devices from Brett Bentsen (Product Unit Manager of PMCs).

Portable Media Centers allow you to have all of your favorite video, music, and pictures wherever you are. At WinHEC earlier this year, I personally demo'd the Creative Zen Portable Media Center and it was rather impressive. The ability to store all your entertainment on a device that has a good battery life (8 hours) and one that can output films/TV recordings onto a TV is the unique selling point of the PMCs. PMCs are likely to be a huge hit with kids and teens wanting to watch their favourite TV shows whilst travelling.

If you're still not sure what the PMC is or are interested in the devices then check out this great overview below!

LG PM70 Portable Media Center

LG PM70 Portable Media Center 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

pm70.jpgInfosync has details of an as-yet-unreleased Portable Media Center device from LG, that looks a lot like the DVX-POD 7010, except that it's an actual Windows-branded unit. The first generation of PMC devices were crippled, in my experience, by their need to transcode every type of file into Windows Media versions before copying it to the unit. That made for needlessly long transfer times and really killed the devices usefulness for anyone not totally on board with Windows' codecs. J0rgen lists all sorts of file formats on the LG PM70, though, so if it can really play OGG Vorbis and Xvid natively, they might have a winner (this is presuming the market for portable video players won't be steamrolled by the PSP).

Creative Portable Media Center Skewered

Creative Portable Media Center Skewered 07/17/2004 12:54 PM

zen_portable_media_center.jpgIf you'd like to read a review of the Creative Portable Media Center with "so much added (and useless) commentary that Gizmodo would be ashamed to publish it," ExtremeTech has a very unpositive, baseball-centric review. While I don't think that portable media centers are going to crash and burn, necessarily (although the ones hobbled by DRM might), I do think it's amusing for a company to promote products that are most easily (and most commonly) used by those that use Bit Torrent and other copyright-infringement tools, while with the other hand selling DRM systems to the television, movie, and music industries.

These are neat little doo-dads, but it seems like a device for a pretty small niche. You'd need to have a long commute to get any mileage out of one of these things. If you're an air traveler, you probably already own a laptop that can do most of this stuff for you. Call me a curmudgeon, but unless the price falls significantly, I don't really see these taking off.

NewsGator Offering in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Enables Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and even Karaoke.

NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily find NewsGator software and services online, without having to separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not already been viewed on another device can be displayed by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of NewsGator Technologies.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.

"Media Center PCs allow consumers to have faster and more efficient access to all of their favorite digital content when, where, and how they want," said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing at Microsoft Corp. "With the NewsGator Media Center Edition, NewsGator Technologies is delivering a complementary and innovative service that will let Media Center Edition PC users easily access their customized choice of news services."

More about NewsGator Media Center Edition

This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device" strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. NewsGator Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any device, without duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information from any device, whenever they need it.
