Independence From the Press Rocks
the Gatekeeper's World
09/01/2004 10:27 PM

There is a smear campaign launched against John Kerry. But that is not the only thing going on with the Swift Boat Veterans. The press may have knocked down the most serious charges. But the idea of the press as the great adjudicator has also been knocked down.

Tablet PC 2004 Update Rocks My World

Tablet PC 2004 Update Rocks My World 12/08/2003 03:27 AM

(Note: this post was written in an airplane yesterday on my Tablet PC): When Dana Epp visited me recently, he got on my case because I didn't use my Tablet for weblogging. Why not? Because the handwriting recognition was not very good. Now, let me explain. First of all, this is the first blog post that I've made completely with the use of a pen. For this, I am using a pre-release version of the "Lonestar" update for the Tablet PC (which will officially be called Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2004).

First, Peter has the best report on Lonestar.

So, why haven't I used the Tablet PC for text entry before? Because my handwriting sucks and the first version of the Tablet PC has trouble with it. Now, to be fair to the Tablet PC, the fact that it recognizes anything at all is a major accomplishment. But, even if your handwriting is recognized 95% of the time, it's frustrating to use and slow. I keyboard at about 100 words per minute with nearly 100% accuracy (and without needing to look at my hands or think about the act of inputing). Using a pen on today's Tablet PC is a long way from that.

With Lonestar my inking frustrations are gone.

Lonestar is a free update to the Tablet PC. I installed it in minutes on Friday. On top of my existing Tablet PC operating system. I can even uninstall it. Why didn't I install it before? I didn't want to mess up my machine. If that's you, get over your fear. This is a HUGE upgrade for the Tablet PC. I can't repeat that enough. It made this blog post possible.

Here's my experiences: handwriting recognition is now about 99.9%, even with my bad handwriting. That alone makes writing much more enjoyable (and fast). But, when a mistake does happen, then you really see the innovations that have been made. First, the "TIP" (Tablet Input Panel), which is where you enter your text, is completely new and redesigned. The first thing I noticed is that the ink is smoother and more responsive. That makes writing more like the experience on paper.

The second thing I noticed is that my writing was being recognized on the fly. As I write little tags appear underneath my writing with the Tablet PC's best guess.

Then I noticed that there were some mistakes (hey, my handwriting is bad!) "Holy crap," I said when I discovered that I could click on the words and Lonestar gives you a bunch of choices. For instance, when I wrote "crap" it translated that to "crop." So, I click on "crap" and it gives me a bunch of best guesses to change it to. In my experience so far this works on nine out of 10 mistakes.

So what about the times where it doesn't give you a good suggestion? Well, you can either delete your try and try it again or you can choose the closest and then correct it character-by-character.

Some mistakes even get through into Word. Even here the TIP is much better. Just highlight the mistake and re-ink what you want instead. This is totally going to change the editing process. Now I can write on the couch.

There are tons of other enhancements too. For instance, the TIP can be set to float next to your cursor.

Anyway, just wanted to say this is a HUGE increase in Tablet PC functionality. It's amazing how much better they've made the experience of using a Tablet PC.

What does this mean for Microsoft? Well, I think we should change our motto to "making it possible to compute anywhere at anytime." This release dramatically puts Microsoft out front in the computing race. No other platform has the ability to recognize my handwriting as well as the Tablet PC now can.

Oh, tomorrow I'll start my ink blog. Watch for it.

MySQL Full-Text Search Rocks My World

MySQL Full-Text Search Rocks My World 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
People ask me about MySQL's full-text search from time to time, but I've never actually used it. I understand how it works, so I can generally provide ball-park ideas about performance and suitability for a particular purpose. But until today, I had no first hand experience. That all changed today. My initial reaction: Wow! In MySQL 4.0.10 (I haven't bothered to build 4.0.11 yet) it makes my life way easier. Here's the problem I'm trying to solve, stated generally enough...

Powell forces press aide to let him
answer Meet the Press question
05/17/2004 06:11 AM
Colin Powell appeared on Meet the Press this weekend, and his appearance was marred by his press secretary moving the camera and attempting to end the interview early when Russert, the interviewer, started to ask a hardball question about the fictional Nigerian yellow-cake uranium that Powell used as an excuse to go to war in Iraq.

Most noteworthy about this event was that Powell, rebuked the press-secretary on air, demanded that the camera be trained on him again, and then answered the question, describing the intelligence he'd received as "deliberately misleading."

Lisa Rein's got the video up -- highly recommended.

EMILY MILLER, STATE DEPARTMENT PRESS AIDE: You're off.

SECRETARY POWELL: I am not off.

EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: No. They can't use it, they're editing it.

SECRETARY POWELL: He's still asking the questions.

EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was not ...

SECRETARY POWELL: Tim, I am sorry I lost you.

MR. RUSSERT: I am right here Mr. Secretary. I would hope they would put you back on camera. I don't know who did that.

EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was going to go for another five minutes.

SECRETARY POWELL: We've really scre...

MR. RUSSERT: I think that was one of your staff Mr. Secretary. I don't think that's appropriate.

SECRETARY POWELL: Emily, get out of the way. Bring the camera back please. (Camera returns to the interview subject) I think we're back on Tim, go ahead with your last question.

Device independence

Device independence 02/10/2004 02:49 AM
For a team of collaborators, Groove synchronizes both the sets of applications available in a given context (or "shared space") and the data written by those applications. If you drop your laptop on the floor you can effortlessly recover everything into a fresh instance of Groove on a new machine.

Of course this works only for native Groove apps. Browser history and bookmarks, Outlook settings, and a million other things are handled in a million other ways -- or not handled at all -- because desktop operating systems aren't Groove. A general solution would require OSs that work like Groove, and applications that send messages rather than write files. Well, come to think of it, why not? [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

Still Dependent on Independence Day

Still Dependent on Independence Day 07/03/2004 03:13 PM
Did you ever have one of those moments where you just wanted to haul out the old 12-gauge and blow grapefruit-sized holes through enything even remotely digital in sight? It happens all too often. If I could have found the shells before I cooled off… The bottom line is that my digital dreams of lying around on the porch entertained by streaming audio coming over the Wi-Fi airwaves went kaflooey in spectacular manner. It all started innocently enough when I got my hands on some money. I’d been planning this part of The Grand Upgrade for some time. I’d just go out and buy a Linksys broadband wireless router and a matching ‘.g’ card for my antiquated IBM Thinkpad and I’d be flying high. Right. First up was to get the router in place and running the part of the network that is to remain wired. That only took a 20 minute call to their tech support. Their people are rather obviously of Indian descent, but are capable people with a good deal of patience. I did my best to understand and together, we finally got the thing working. It wasn’t hard, but what I still fail to get is why neither the Quick Start manual nor the main manual had this set of instructions in them. Being quick on the trigger, I took notes on the provedure. I figured I’d better, since the sequence of steps took no logical sequence. Suddenly, it all clicked. I now had every system independently sucking down bytes from the Internet without the chance that taking one down would trash the others. Wonderful. Then I got stupid. Or optimistic, though the two are very close. I decided I’d try setting up the notebook card. Boom! Brick wall. File errors every time I went through the setup. Then I took a look in the Hardware Manager, since I had a good power light on the thing, just no ‘Link’ lights. More bad news- a yellow and black exclamation point. Further investigation revealed that “The device cannot be enabled because IRQ Steering is not enabled on this machine” or words to that effect. Worse yet, the message encouraged me to change the settings in the “machine BIOS” in order to enable IRQ Steering. Since the machine is old enough that it originally came with Windows 95, I leave it to you to guess how effective that would be. Oops, sorry, last BIOS update released by Big Blue was in 1998 and had been in place for quite some time. Another call to the good offshore folks showed me that without IRQ steering, there just wasn’t going to be any fun stuff like a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet. End of story. So, the card was reluctantly returned to the retail wonderland it came from and I gave up (for now) on my digital dream. Some day when I get the needed cash and there isn’t any domestic disaster lurking in the wings, I’ll do what I need to, which is to ditch the old clunker and buy a newer old clunker that can support my need for surfing. So ends the tale of failed Independence for Independence day.
