Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

Hitachi's Deskstar 7K500 offers two flaps of firsts, being
not only the first to hit half a terabyte in a single drive, but one
of the very first to use the SATA II interface—that means more
data at faster speeds. If you don't have an SATA II interface in your
PC, though, Hitachi will be offering a $500 version with an 8MB buffer
and a parallel ATA interface (the long, flat, ribbon cable kind). If
you want the SATA II offering, it's just 20 bucks more—plus you
get a bigger 16MB cache.
Not exactly a great value, but the biggest sizes never are. Also,
probably not actually available in yellow.

Electronics Weekly
reports that Hitachi's UK researchers have also developed a
complimentary technology to the "Get Perpendicular" concept they're
touting for increasing storage capacity (areal density) on hard
drives. Tunneling anisotropic magentoresistance (which earns you a
triple word score) takes advantage of a side effect of manganese
doping. In less syllabic terms, it lets them shrink the drive head to
a few tens of nanometers, which will work nicely with the newly
perpendicular bits they'll be reading.

costs prove to be more efficient that POTS (Plain Old Phone Service)

Seagate Tries to Block Import of Cornice
Hard Drive Devices
07/05/2004 09:28 AMLast week, both
Seagate and Western Digital sued hard drive newcomer Cornice in
separate patent-infringement lawsuits. So besides that welcome wagon,
Seagate has now asked the US International Trade Commission to ban the
importation of any device that uses one of Cornice's 1-inch hard
drives, which brings me to why you care. If the USITC goes for it, MP3
players from Aiwa, iRiver, Element, Agere, Rio, and RCA -- and that's
just the short list -- could be illegal to import under the
injunction. That takes the lawsuit from boring, insider sniping to
slightly-less-boring and irritating, and well, I thought you should
know.
Also, it must be frustrating for a new company, without years of
links to cloud the Google waters, to return as the search results of
its name two links to its website and a third to a news story about a
lawsuit against them.
