04/12/2004 09:59 AMJOEL JOHNSON -- So PDA sales are falling, while smartphone shipments
are up. According to some, like The Dallas Morning News' Doug Bedell,
this means that PDAs are dying. To others, like Brighthand's Ed Hardy
(looking resplendant in dark turtleneck and matching beard), it means

"Trust us -- we're going to change the world. Trust us -- we're
laser-focused on preserving your privacy. Trust us -- we're making it
easier to write .Net-aware apps."
But backstage it's a different message: Microsoft .NotYet. Trust us --
we're patenting the HailStorm schemas. Trust us -- but we're not
rewriting our apps in .Net. Trust us -- we're locking you in with
licenses for upgrades that will never happen because -- trust us --
we're going to change our minds. -- Steve Gilmor

06/25/2004 12:33 AMWorld Wide Wardrive finds most access points unprotected: The fourth
week-long international wardrive found 288,000 access points in their
survey, more than 50 percent of which had no security enabled. Since
these were passive scans, it's impossible to tell whether those access
points were inside or outside corporate firewalls, and thus not open
portals, but it's likely that the overwhelming majority were just
plain open. Nearly 30 percent had the default SSID or network name
set....

Music Social Insecurity
Music Social Insecurity
11/12/2003 01:34 PMR Dickson writes in with a
link to an article talking about the
social
impact of music sharing, asking what would someone think if they
were able to look at what music you listen to. He also wonders
whether or not the government could use that to try to "classify" you.
The article itself talks about the concept of "playlistism", where
someone is discriminated against due to the sort of music they have in
their shared music folder. I'm reminded of the line from one of the
music snobs in Nick Hornby's
High Fidelity, when he says
something to the effect of "you should be judged not on what you
are like, but what you like." Apparently some folks are
changing their listening habits just to change the impression they
give people. Of course, I don't think this is all that different from
life prior to music sharing. I remember a friend of mine going
through my music collection when I was in junior high or so, and
telling me what was okay to keep and what needed to be ditched. A lot
of folks end up listening to what their friends listen to anyway, so
this is just expanding the ability to do that. As someone who seems
to listen to a lot of music that not many others listen to, I really
have no problem having people know what I listen to - and I'd bet that
anyone who went through just my music collection would have a hard
time guessing the type of person I am.

Yet More Microsoft Insecurity Outrages
06/25/2004 11:54 AMBBC: Web browser
flaw prompts warning. Users are being told to avoid using
Internet Explorer until Microsoft patches a serious security hole in
it. The loophole is being exploited to open a backdoor on a PC that
could let criminals take control of a machine. Infoworld: MS issues warning on Web attacks, pushes XP SP2
beta. Microsoft Corp. acknowledged Thursday that Internet
Information Server (IIS), a component of the Windows 2000 Server, and
holes in the Internet Explorer Web browser are being used in
widespread attacks that are compromising Web pages and using them as
launching pads for malicious computer code.
How many
billions of dollars of damage is Microsoft's inadequately secure
software causing every year? Why is the company not liable for any of
its nonfeasance?
Where are the trial lawyers on this one? I don't get it.

Aren't Cellphones Annoying? And What's
Up With Those PDAs?
08/19/2004 07:35 AM
There was a time where I thought my career was going
to be in that sparkling sugarplum factory known as "computers," but
reading columns like this one by Robert J. Samuelson has convinced me
that my career in "journalism" is much more suited to my desire to
string lots of curmudgeonly words together and get paid for it. This
week's insightful column? "A Cell Phone? Never for Me." You fight that
power, Samuelson. (I especially like the part where he notes that he
has also "resisted ATM cards, laptops, and digital cameras." This is
the part where Zombie Thoreau puts down his cell phone and slaps the
wax out of him.)
So that's journalism, I guess. I can't wait until I'm old and can
write columns for Newsweek like, "What's Up With Mustard?" and "Holo
Porn? It's 2D for Me."
