I just spent an hour on the phone with my father-in-law failing to help him find his email client. It used to be there, but it vanished from the tool bar at the bottom. Now we can't get it back. None of the Finder options seem to actually help us find anything. I know it's there. I know it's "easy." But it sure ain't intuitive. Anyone want to give me the most basic instruction about how to find things on the !@#$% Mac, OS X? As Dr. Dean would say, "Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhh!" More than four years ago, I ordered a CD from buy.com. Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5 (download lite or standa rd) . After it's admittedly dissapointing and rushed effort with Version 3 of their popular media player, the Nullsoft team seeks to make amends with their newest release, combining the stability of 2.x with the extras of Winamp 3, adding several new features while they're at it. Though already long-considered the standard for Windows machines, Winamp 5 puts more pressure on other competing, low memory-footprint audio players that have cropped up like Foobar and QCD. More cheerleading/zealotry inside...

72445.1 I just installed Winamp. I had it a long time ago. I have a lot of ogg files from Linux. I had to switch to Win2K at work. So I installed Winamp. Now, it keeps a constant Internet dialog going while the files play. I shouldn't be streaming them, they should be just playing off of the local disk. When I disabled the lan connection, the player stopped. Anyone knows what's up?

Trackbacks in Winamp 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

You might have noticed that I show the current playing song from my mp3 player here on my site. What you don't know is that I've been using a hack for the past few months. For Winamp, I used the DoSomething plugin to work through a local special template file which would create another local flat file with song info. I'd then ftp the output file to my server, which I loaded as an include. To get my mac to the same, I had to setup a similar program, and both hacks ended up constantly sending flat files to my server over insecure FTP. Kinda sounds like overkill, doesn't it?

I kind of rushed to get this site's new design online before the trip to Austin, and this past week at SXSW gave me about a bazillion more ideas for the site. I'm going to write up all the tech I used, how I built it, and why I did each part in a couple weeks when the site is more feature complete, but I wanted to give you a preview of what that'll be like.

One of the ideas I got yesterday at lunch was using trackback on blogs to do Now Playing lists by just passing urls through mp3 players. I asked Ben and Mena a couple questions and they told me it was 10 minutes work. With a few clicks and copy/paste jobs, I just completed in a matter of minutes and it actually worked.

So Winamp is now sending trackbacks to my blog, and every time a new song comes on, a new ping goes out, and my site changes. Here's how to do it in Winamp 2.x:

Why JSP Sucks So Hard

Why JSP Sucks So Hard 12/19/2002 11:43 PM
once again my UI engineers will be taking perfectly good HTML written in Dreamweaver and tearing it apart, throwing out some of it and rewriting other parts of it, just to make it work with the JSP they're writing. Once they're done, the HTML author will have absolutely no clue what the page does any more, and will have no desire or ability to edit it. When we insist that no really we need this redesigned, we'll spend twice as long doing it (doubling our costs, negative ROI, bad technology choice, yadda yadda yadda) since the HTML author will need that long to write in sample data and then have the JSP author tear it out again. -- Marc Hedlund

Spellex-Anywhere SUCKS!

Spellex-Anywhere SUCKS! 07/05/2004 07:35 AM

I did a stupid thing earlier this week I purchased a spell checker to use for online spell checking being I could not get Firefox's spell checker to work. I went googling and thought I found a good program I should have run it a couple of days. What a piece of crap. When it is running it seems to want to own the clipboard and not give it back. It doesn't recognize when I have put the cursor in a different window. The list goes on. I will be invoking their 30 day satisfaction guaranteed clause. Anyone have a good suggestion for a spell checker to use with Firefox

ARGH, MY MAC SUCKS!

ARGH, MY MAC SUCKS! 05/12/2004 08:23 AM
How do I turn on the screensaver with a key combination!?! I don't want to use the hot corners (I already have them overloaded with Exposé and I want to have the top left corner free so I don't have to worry about counting pixels when I try and access the Apple menu), but so far the best way to lock the Powerbook is to go and turn the lid down and then back up again. which turns on the screen saver (and stops iTunes, BTW, since the computer goes to sleep for a second).

I know there are Mac people reading me, so please: tell me which key combination I have to use, or which freeware application I have to install to just be able to press Apple-F12 to lock the computer! I've been trying to find the info from Google, but apparently I haven't been able to figure out the right keywords.

Frustrated now!

(Sorry for the headline, just wanted to grab your attention there. My Mac Powerbook does NOT suck, it is a wonderful little machine and I grow more attached to it every day. It is by far the best computer I've ever owned. I just need this one thing to make it perfect. Please?)
