Seven open source business strategies
for competitive advantage
05/14/2004 09:16 AMOpen source presents a large potential competitive advantage for
hardware and software vendors, and vendors of complementary or
substitute services. Linux has contributed greatly to the adoption and
success of OSS. Companies such as IBM, HP, Red Hat, Oracle, and
recently, Novell, have invested in, and legitimized the use of Linux
for enterprise applications -- including datacenter operations.
Attorney/analyst John Koenig offers a listing of open source
strategies that can bring great competitive advantages to companies if
implemented correctly. Read on at ITMJ ...

What proprietary software can teach open

04/12/2005 08:04 AMBeing the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know
of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly,
popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit
of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of
open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity
or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the
right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software
without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.

Paranoia game redesigned using

08/06/2004 07:52 AMParanoia, the classic role-playing game in which players battle a mad,
totalitarian computer for their freedom ("a light-hearted game of
terror, death, bureaucracy, mad scientists, mutants, dangerous
weapons, insane robots, and technological satire that encourages
players to lie, cheat, and backstab each other at every turn") has
just re-launched with a new version that was collaboratively developed
with players via a Wiki, borrowing "the tools and methods of
open-source software development for a paper game."
To a large degree, the game was developed online, in public. Fans of
the game contributed enthusiastically via blog, wiki, and online
forum. They wrote text, debated rules, proofread, ran statistical
analyses, and even wrote a computer simulator to test the game's
paper-and-pencil rules.
"Online collaboration made this edition of Paranoia the best yet,"
said Allen Varney (www.allenvarney.com), the game's designer. "We
borrowed the tools and methods of open-source software development for
a paper game, and it worked brilliantly. I plan to create future games
the same way, and other designers should consider it too."

My
March
21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition
because, on the same day, a new events database called
EVDB was announced and shown at PC
Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so
for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among
others:
Dan
Farber,
Ross
Mayfield,
Om Malik,
David
Weinberger, and

The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style,
Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds
promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.

terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification,
addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and
privileges that we associate with open source software.

04/05/2005 11:50 AM IBM Adopts
Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via
Ross
Gardler).
