Growing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age. Gibson is getting ready to start selling a digital version of the guitar. It looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock our guitars.

Xeni Jardin: A blogger who describes himself as an "extraordinary ordinary guy in Japan" says this on the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty:

"Kitty's design was just a crib from ... Musti, created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998) [Ed note: she's the center figure in the BoingBoing graphic at left]. Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood. Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it. It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact."

Not one, but two Hello Kitty cellphone peripherals in one day? Be still my heart! The first is from Expansys and is a Bluetooth headset, but not the clip-over-the-ear kind, but the kind you keep in a pocket and then use a corded earpiece with (read: sort of pointless). The other looks quite a bit the same as the first (although it's hard to tell exactly from the tiny picture) but comes in a gift box with what looks like a charger or a in-car unit or something. Oh, and it's white, which means it's designed to compliment Hello Kitty evening wear.

I would have posted this up about 5 minutes before now, but I noticed they only had three more in stock, so I thought I should get there before you punks. Because lord knows, there's nothing that goes together more sweetly than a distended Hello Kitty head and a light, battery-powered sucking force. And for $10, even! If this thing moves itself around by itself - something that I'm sad to say probably isn't the case - I would buy 24 of them and set them loose around the house. It'd be cheaper than a Roomba and at least 24 times as cute.

Also, have you noticed people saying kawaii a lot lately, too? I doubt they are doing the clap and giggle. You gotta do the clap and giggle.

Mark Frauenfelder: Sid, who blogs Winkie, lives in Tokyo. Yesterday, he got a press release for a Hello Kitty branded insect repellent pendant, designed to be worn on the wrist or around the neck. The press release has lots of great janglish:

It is good feeling to have a food outside. But, it is bad if unpleasant bugs come. So, now a handy bug repellent with no smell gets popular.

The press release also cautions journalists not to imply that the pendant actually does the thing it is advertised to do:

We appreciate your corporation that the word such as "repellent" and "repel unpleasant bugs", etc. can be used on publicity, but the word or wording that imply "Effective for mosquitoes" or "itchy" and "mosquito", etc. cannot be used. It's sort of a cut-and-paste job, but Vince Veneziani took a non-functional Sega Dreamcast and turned it into a guitar amp. The 1/4-inch jacks come out of the B and C controller ports, and the speaker (must be a small practice amp) is stuck where the fan used to be.

DVForge's new JamPlug, an in-line (well, I guess most audio equipment is inline, but bear with me) amplifier that is billing itself as the "World's Smallest Guitar Amp," and for once a world's-smallest claim is probably on the money. The $60 piece runs on a single AAA battery and has a pair of strangely-familiar matching white headphones. The thumb wheel controls volume, and it even can be overdriven into some quality of distortion, which probably isn't the best sounding fuzz or crunch or whatever in the world, but if it can free the legion of pimply guitar noodlers from the curse that is the Rockman Metal Ace, then the amateur rock world will surely be a better place.

Won't ship until October, but you can get on the list now to be notified.
