Apologies for down-time...
10/29/2003 12:10 AMI'd just like to apologise for the relative lack of posting over
the last few days on both plasticbag.org and Everything in
Moderation. Looking around me I see a near infinity of "things
that need to get done", very few of which are actually getting
done. I'm feeling a little swamped and something's got to give. At the
moment that's the weblog(s). It's a shame, though, cos there's so much
going on in my head and otherwise that I'd love to be able to write up
in greater detail... Patience!

Clarifications and Apologies
Clarifications and Apologies
06/27/2004 05:39 PM1. I misquoted danah baoyd in
my post pointing to her pointing to Friendster's marketing
campaign. She DID NOT receive those emails. She just got them "from
users who work for Yahoo" that she knows. But they did really
exist.
2. The most important correction is totally my fault In the
confusion and din of SuperNova - danah told me that ORKUT was
outputting CVS of their profiles (and social nets) NOT
FRIENDSTER!
Man oh man - talk about wishful thinking. In the back of my brain,
I'm processing "OK Ellen Spertus is getting something done, Jason
and Ev are grokking it, and maybe Megan helped....." and what
comes out is "Scott Sassa is trying (along with the desperate
emails) to do the right thing."
So I totally got it wrong. Friendster is not opening up, it's
Orkut. Right on for that! I got almost 800 names in my friends
list....
OH well - who knows, maybe the power of the blogosphere (and my
yelling at Ajeet from Kleiner the other night) will convince
Friendster to open up.
And let's all hope that juju vibe rubs off on Tom at MySpace - as well.
3. Finally there's teh issue of me accusing Real and their
Rhapsody music service of not being able to mix and match music from
various different downloading sources.
I often use this situation as an example of how little the music
industry is in touch with their end-users. The metaphor I use is
"imagien if all teh records you bought from Tower Records would only
play on CD players from Tower Records?" That's teh situation we're in
right now.
So Rob Reid (founder of Listen.com - whcih created Rhapsodya nd
sold it to Real) comes back to me and says "well as a matter of
fact, you're wrong! We DO support that feature!"
Within minutes someone on the backchannel confirms that - but we
could find only one reference to this feature - anywhere. It's
nowhere to be seen on the web site, in pronotional materials or -
anywhere. So how was I supposed to know?
My response to Rob was "well why don't you let us know about
that!" I consider this to be a big deal. If it's true - which I
have yet to confirm yet - it's a pretty big story.
It'll mean that Real is really putting
their money where their mouth is. They open sourced their Helix media
server technology and this will make them the FIRST (but hopefully not
the last) music downloading service to acknowledge that maybe
end-users want to buy music from more than one source.
So my apologies to Rob Reid - with the caveat that I haven't seen
it work yet myself. But I guarentee you - I WILL be checking that out
- real soon now.

06/11/2004 09:39 AMSeomtimes I wish that I had a cool handle. Then I start thinking about
the many, many contacts I have and how busy I am and just put the
thought aside. Now let’s get to the meat of the matter- the
infected e-mail incident.First off, a note from WBML (sorry, but
typing that handle is too much like work!) would have been nice. It
would have alerted me that my system might have become infected. As
you’ll see, that can be a vitally important item of
information.In Reply to WBML’s post-Sorry. WBML, I wish I could
claim responsibility, but this isn’t the first such occasion.
I’ve received ‘e-mail’ from
‘Chris@lockergnome.com’ that was infected mail. The more
things like that happen, the more likely it is that we will be able to
narrow it down to the actual infected party. Maybe. Since I’m in
the end phases of a major anti-virus software test/review, you may be
sure that this system ISN’T the one sending out bogus e-mail.
I’m keeping a VERY close eye on incoming and outgoing e-mails.
Especially since an incident three weeks ago. Why? Because three weeks
ago, this system was hit and taken down by the then-unknown Bobax.A
Internet worm. I can prove quite easily that my system was one of the
very first attacked, since it happened on or before 5/12/04 and the
‘official’ first known spotting of the worm was on 5/16.
All this despite having a first-class anti-virus and firewall in place
and operating correctly. It took me three days to nail down what was
going on and why, because the worm’s activity didn’t set
off any alarms. This is most important- the thing had code for its own
SMTP server, so it didn’t set off alarms from the anti-virus
software monitoring my e-mail client. In the meantime, it was happily
sending out hundreds of spams in the background. It didn’t
affect my system performance, just my ability to send e-mail, which is
what alerted me in the beginning. It then took me less than an hour to
wipe the thing off my system. I suppose that some might criticize me
for failing to track down the actual files involved and save copies
for the anti-virus gurus to drool over, but I wanted the thing gone
NOW! So now I keep an even closer eye on system processes, performance
levels, processes running, and I treat the anti-virus software as nice
to have around, but it’s not the final answer. At least not this
year.Consider this a nice reminder to pay attention to ALL your system
functions and not to rely on safety measures that may be bypassed by a
worm author!

Apologies for spamming friends with
SMS.ac
02/05/2005 09:30 PM
I was going to do more research before I posted this, but since it
appears that I've created a minor epidemic in my local community, I'm
posting this a bit uninformed. I received an email inviting me to SMS.ac, which I
would normally ignore, but it was from someone who's judgment I trust.
I clicked through the signup process without finally completing it,
but unwittingly gave the service access to my MSN IM information. This
spammed my whole buddy list with invitations. It was unintuitive to
unregister even though I hadn't completed the registration process.
Also, I heard from someone that if you don't unregister, the service
continues to send invites to people you add to your buddy list.
Anyway, I have no idea if the service is interesting, but the the fact
that you invite your whole buddylist before you actually try the
service and the difficulty and deleting your account makes me
skeptical about it.
Anyway, I'll post more information when I get it and apologies for
sending invites to people to a service I'm not even using.
This is the first time I've used rel=nofollow in a post.
;-)

News site registration
News site registration
07/16/2004 11:46 AMThe single hottest topic in the online news industry at
the moment is that of required registration. A number of large news
sites (the New York Times, the
Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune) have moved
to this model, and many local newspapers are following suit.
If you haven't seen BugMeNot, go and check it out now.
It's a simple service for sharing free news site accounts, and it's
started to upset some people in the news industry. A post to the online-news mailing
list inquiring about possible legal action against the site
prompted me to reply with the following:
The flaw here is not with BugMeNot - it's with the entire
concept of
user registration in its present form. The reason BugMeNot works is
that there is absolutely no value to an end user in keeping their
account to themselves. If you want to stop people from sharing their
accounts, give them an incentive not to. This is not a difficult thing
to do - I have a large number of accounts on different community sites
which are used to contribute to discussions and manage my personal
information. I would never dream of sharing those accounts with others
- it would allow other people to impersonate me and damage my
reputation. An account that only allows me to read content (a one-way
interaction) is of no value to me, so why not share the account with
others?
BugMeNot is not a new idea by any stretch of the
imagination: shared
accounts have existed for as long as sites have required registration
for spurious reasons. For as long as I can remember, members of the
MetaFilter community have worked together to set up username/password
combinations of metafilter/metafilter on sites that require
registration to bypass the irritation of setting up yet another
account.
If you want to fight BugMeNot, the solution is to monitor
the site and
ban any accounts for your own site that appear there - but that's just
fighting the symptoms. The core problem is the whole idea of
registration itself: it's anti-web, anti-user, it doesn't scale and
it's a sign of extreme short term thinking. Imagine if every site on
the web required registration - no one would use it!
As a web user, I see registration as nothing more than an
unnecessary
irritation. Before BugMeNot I would simply hit "Back" whenever I saw a
registration screen; now I use it to carry on through to the articles
and accompanying ads. As a heavy web user who buys online almost as
frequently as offline I'm exactly the kind of demographic sites should
be trying to attract.
Reading the above a few days later, I think it still
accurately represents my thoughts on the free registration model.
Adrian has also posted his thoughts
on registration, which run along very similar lines to mine.
For a great example of the mentality behind registration,
check out this sp
iel from the Toronto Star (via Craig Saila):
Our main goal of asking you to become a registered member
of thestar.com is to improve and enhance your online experience with
us. Registration is an important piece of our long-term strategy in
building a valuable audience for our advertisers and helping us in
setting the priorities for future site development and
enhancements.
[...]
By asking you to share some information with us we are
able to increase the value of our site to advertisers, who help
support the cost of producing one of Canada's top news sites, by
offering them the ability to target their advertising messages based
on the information you provide.
And that's the problem right there: as a user, the value
proposition of having more targetted ads thrown at me just isn't a
good enough incentive for me to jump through their hoops.
