You know, I wrote this big, stupid rant (which is after the jump if you really want to read it) but let me cut to the quick: The music industry just took your lunch money, and now they want you to pay them to do it again.

Mozilla Fails to Restrict Access to
"shell:"
07/10/2004 11:02 AM
“This notice covers BOTH a security concern and a DOS. 1)Using the ‘shell:’ prefix in addresses on a windows PC allows access to the local file system. AFAIK all shell shortcuts in IE will also work in mozilla. Addresses such as ‘shell:cookies’ passes the call to explorer and it shows the desired location. Address to individual files or cookies are handled by Mozilla and treated as a ‘file:’ protocol. While I have not looked into the exploitability of this behavior, it would seem to be a security risk as IE has supposedly dropped this functionality in SP1 for IE 6. 2) By making a request for a file that does not exist on the user’s system using the ‘shell:’ prefix, Mozilla will continue to open windows until the user’s system crashes.” The resolution is to apply a patch or update to the latest version.

As reported by Ernie, Disney is lobbying to get indecency regulations applied to cable -- yet another example (after the Sonny Bono Act) to use law to protect itself against competition. 06/17/2004 11:21 AM

CNet is reporting about the RIAA's appeal yesterday to the FCC to restrict end-users' ability to make home-recordings of music broadcasted over high-quality digital radio. Fortunately, the proposals are not going unopposed, as both consumer groups and electronics industry consortiums are pushing back against the RIAA's move to remove home-taping rights that consumers have had for years. Remember kids, Now That It's Digital, It's Wrong!

Snap judgements

Snap judgements 04/16/2005 08:03 AM
I've found a good use for my iPod - I listen to podcasts on the way to work. Yesterday, I found this gem: The keynote of SXSW conference by Malcolm Gladwell. (MP3 download and stream available.)

He talks about snap judgements, and how good we are convincing ourselves that we are making a rational decision, even when we're not. I've always believed that intuition is a skill that can be trained - but I didn't know humans were that dependent on it...

Highly, highly recommended.

Snap Your Fingers, Here He Comes 04/06/2005 05:30 AM
Ladies And Gentlemen, The Teeny Little Super Guy - not quite a meme, but more of a collective, "Oh man, I had totally forgotten about that" from the internet. This obscure 80s Sesame Street character's nostalgic resurgence has taken the form of a Livejournal Community, countless blog entries and even an indie rap video homage. Could Captain Vegetable be far behind [.wav file]?

Panasonic D-Snap SV-AS30, SV-AS3

Panasonic D-Snap SV-AS30, SV-AS3 09/21/2004 10:38 AM

panasonic_dsnap_sv.jpg imagePanasonic has two new cameras out in their D-Snap line, the SV-AS30 [left] and the SV-AS3. Both are thin-profile 3.2-megapixel cameras that can not only record MPEG4 video, but can also play it back from SD cards, as well as MP3s or WMAs (maybe only the SV-AS3 can do the music playback, I'm not positive). In addition, the cameras have a 16:9 image mode for shooting photos that will later be viewed on HDTV screens (1920 x 1080).

The upright form factor is probably my least favorite camera design there is, but they do look nice an pocketable, so there's that.

Snap Crackle Squish

Snap Crackle Squish 02/01/2005 10:11 PM

World of Trash

« Finnish jätehuone still-life; bucket, waste drum of some Sodium Dicyanamide (used mainly for the production of chlorhexidine, a versatile bactericide, and agrochemicals), a dead dot matrix printer, torn insulation on heating pipes, a 1970s chair and a bizarre red, gold and black pillow adorned with ancient Egyptian motifs. »

The deep thought for the day came to me in the grocery where I noticed a new kind of cereal: Are Multigrain Rice Krispies© still Rice Krispies©? Shouldn't they be Multigrain Krispies© or something Krispies© instead? What about Rice, Oat and Maize Krispies©? Maybe Pro-Biotic Krispies© for the middle-aged yuppies? When they started with Corn Chex©, they franchised into multiple flavours but never Multigrain Corn Chex©, rather Multigrain Chex©. I am perplexed. I did notice that the same cereal is being marketed in the UK as Rice Krispies© Muddles which come with a pro- and pre-biotic bio-bonus payload! Sounds more like a biology lab experiment than a breakfast cereal served in sugar with a little milk.

I am also frightened by the disturbing rumour that Oliver Stone is thinking about making an epic fanfic movie that will make every Thatcherite pre-order the DVD for enjoying it in private with a jar of vaseline and tissues. He is supposedly thinking about Meryl Streep for the lead probably because every other self-respecting actress in the UK would laugh at the very idea of it.

And, Scene from My Life, nee A Day in the Life, has finally returned after a long hiatus with a photographer in Paris whose photoblog I follow regularly.

Seven more days until we get the puppy. :)
