Wireless Philadelphia launch

Wireless Philadelphia launch 04/08/2005 06:35 PM

Originally uploaded by kwerb.
Yesterday, I attended the press conference at which Philadelphia mayor John Street (that's him in the photo) announced the formal launch of Wireless Philadelphia. This is the city-wide wireless broadband network that has been the source of both so much excitement and so much angst on the part of incumbents.

As Street, and Philly CIO Dianah Neff (the force behind the project) made clear, however, the city isn't just blindly trying to replace private connectivity providers. Philadelphia has established a separate non-profit corporation, which will contract with private companies to build the network. It will then offer the network as an open wholesale platform, with third-party service providers offering the retail connections to end users. That means carriers, ISPs, and hotspot aggregators will all benefit from the city's investment, not compete with it.

No city money will be spent on the project. All costs will be covered from revenues. That's right; the network won't be free. It will cost an estimated $16-$20/month for unlimited access, which is a bargain considering that you can pay $10 just to surf in one Starbucks for a couple hours. The city will be a customer of the wireless network for its internal communications activities, which is expected to save it $2 million per year in telecommunications costs once. And as Street and Neff pointed out, there are all sorts of potential ancillary benefits and services to be delivered on top of the connectivity platform.

It's exciting to live in the place that it pioneering something that I'm confident all major cities will want to do within the next 5-10 years.

By the way, we're organizing a workshop track at Supernova on municipal broadband. The activity around municipal wireless in particular is just too great to ignore. And this decentralization of connectivity and broadband policy is a perfect example of the Supernova themes.

It's not exactly an endorsement, but this unsigned editorial from the paper is highly complimentary: They make the usual provisos, but their tone echoes mine of a few days ago. AT&T Wireless Now Has 3G in Four

AT&T Wireless Now Has 3G in Four
Cities
07/20/2004 04:20 PM
AT&T Wireless announced today--as was leaked last week--that they have 3G wireless available in four U.S. cities: Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle are up and running at 200 to 300 Kbps right now with San Diego (take that, Qualcomm home town?) and Dallas coming by the end of 2004. Upload speeds aren't listed. AT&T will charge $25 per month for phone-based 3G service, with streaming video costing an extra $5 per month. Data plans are $80 per month. No word yet on whether the Motorola phone that works with this W-CDMA network will allow the same kind of sidestepping to connect a laptop via Bluetooth or USB to get the lower price. It does have Bluetooth built in, which is a good sign. Daily Wireless has a round-up of the announcement with details about the phone; they link to this Motorola press release with more phone details. The handset will cost about $300 before rebates or other deals. It has an integrated MP3 player, a large screen, three band (900/1800/1900) support, and handles GSM, GPRS, and W-CDMA. Laptop users will require a Merlin U530 UMTS card....

“Earlier this month, Philadelphia became the latest municipality to throw its hat in the Wi-Fi ring and enjoy an image bounce that would be the envy of any presidential candidate. Civic interest in Wi-Fi makes municipalities look sexy and modern. Less certain, however, are their chances for success as providers of emerging communications technology. Offering wireless broadband is a new course for cities and towns, say observers, and one that may not be quite as…

AT&T Wireless Will Launch 3G in Four
Cities Next Week

AT&T Wireless Will Launch 3G in Four
Cities Next Week
07/15/2004 03:36 PM
Reuters reports that AT&T Wireless is poised to roll out its W-CDMA 3G cellular data offering in Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle next week: AT&T Wireless had been saying "by the end of the year," and this leak of a near-term launch is apparently surprising. The company is only promising 200 to 300 Kbps, but it's likely that W-CDMA will offer much higher burst rates, slightly slower than 1x-EvDO, which Verizon Wireless plans to spend $1 billion in the next several months to expand throughout major markets in the U.S. I expected a rollout in Seattle because AT&T Wireless is headquartered in this region--for the time being. The merger with Cingular will certainly result in an almost total shutdown in this area as there's no logical, only historical reasons for this geographical location. The service will require one of two phones from Nokia and Motorola to access. As TechDirt notes, AT&T Wireless has to launch service in four cities before the end of the year to avoid a requirement to repay $6 billion to investor DoCoMo. Elsewhere, I've seen this figure and deadline rejected by certain executives involved in the transaction, but I don't believe there's been a definitive refutation. [link via TechDirt]...

Telcos and cities struggling for
wireless deployment control
06/05/2005 11:48 PM

In a growing number of American states , city governments and telephone companies are struggling over policies determining who gets to rollout city-wide wireless internet connectivity. Telcos argue that cities offer unfair competition to their businesses.

Twenty states have already passed, or are trying to push through, legislation that would impose heavy restrictions on communities creating their own networks in areas already served by Bells and cable companies.
Thirteen of those states--Arkansas, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington--have passed bills restricting future public broadband projects, though existing initiatives are allowed to operate. The remaining eight have measures pending or have seen their bills fail to reach a vote.

Online Divorce Getting More Respectable

Online Divorce Getting More Respectable 01/22/2004 12:48 PM
Everyone seems fascinated by the idea of getting a divorce online. After all, these days, most wedding planning is done online, so why not divorces? We first mentioned the idea two and a half years ago, and it's become incre asingly popular. However, there were some concerns last year that many online divorces were really scams. Now, however, it sounds like the whole online divorce thing is going mainstream with new companies trying to get in on the market. Of course, there are still concerns about both scams and whether or not getting divorced should be so easy. Considering the ease with which a couple can get married in the first place, I guess it makes sense to make it just as easy on the other end. If people are really concerned about the "easiness" of the process, perhaps they should focus on the marriage side before they worry so much about the divorce.
