Detroit Airport Gets Wi-Fi

Detroit Airport Gets Wi-Fi 12/19/2003 07:36 PM
Concourse Communications built a Wi-Fi network in part of Detroit's airport: The network will be free through the end of the holidays and after that will cost $6.95 for daily use. Concourse went through some restructuring a few months ago, and is finally getting caught up on its contracted airports. It's had Detroit under contracts for years, and the three New York/New Jersey airports (JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark) are about to get fully built out as well instead of the partial service now available....

Wi-Fi Draws Tenants in Detroit

Wi-Fi Draws Tenants in Detroit 01/19/2004 01:59 PM
An apartment complex in Detroit that draws executives from nearby auto makers has Wi-Fi throughout: Residents who rent furnished apartments--apparently many of them do--get the Internet access for free. The owner of the complex calls Wi-Fi a "deal clincher" for many potential residents. It seems as though the network administrator authorizes users on the network by their MAC addresses. A service provider is also targeting apartment buildings in Washington, D.C. For new or old construction, Wi-Fi offers a much easier way for building owners to offer Internet access than stringing cable throughout the building....

The fabulous ruins of Detroit: "After decades of blight, large swathes of Detroit are being reclaimed by nature. Roughly a third of this 139-square-mile city consists of weed-choked lots and dilapidated buildings . . . rather than fight this return to nature, urban farmers have embraced it, gradually converting 15 acres of idle land into more than 40 community gardens and microfarms — some consuming entire blocks." Urban farmers reclaim Detroit

Urban farmers reclaim Detroit 12/11/2003 09:39 AM
In Detroit, urban farmers, frustrated with buying their groceries at Party Stores now that the grocery chains have largely pulled out of the city, have begun to reclaim Detroit's vast empty spaces for grow-your-own operations, complete with livestock and tractors.
After decades of blight, large swathes of Detroit are being reclaimed by nature. Roughly a third of this 139-square-mile city consists of weed-choked lots and dilapidated buildings. Satellite images show an urban core giving way to an urban prairie.

Rather than fight this return to nature, Mr. Weertz and other urban farmers have embraced it, gradually converting 15 acres of idle land into more than 40 community gardens and microfarms — some consuming entire blocks.

Cory speaking at MacHack Detroit, July
27-31
06/24/2005 06:29 PM
Cory Doctorow: I'm delivering a midnight keynote at this year's ADHOC conference (ADHOC is also known as "MacHack") in Detroit, July 27-31. Hope to see you there!
The Advanced Developers Hands On Conference (ADHOC) is an annual event that provides a unique environment for computer programmers, engineers, students, and technology enthusiasts. At ADHOC they learn the cutting-edge technologies of the day not only from experts in classroom and conference sessions but also from each other in intense coding marathons. The conference is well rooted in the Macintosh platform - it is also called MacHack - but over the last few years the conference has grown to encompass other technologies, such as UNIX, open source, mobile devices, and more...

The showcase is an intensive, multi-day contest where you try to make something to impress everyone else at the conference. Ideally, you start it when you arrive, and you finish sometime before you go on stage to show it. Many of the coolest bits of software that came out for the Mac started in the Showcase. And, because everyone wants to see something cool, if you need the help from a programming expert who just happens to be at the show, you can ask them, and you'll learn what you need. You can learn more about the Mac OS in a very short amount of time just by trying to write a showcase entry.

NY Times Still Trying To Equate Silicon
Valley To Detroit

NY Times Still Trying To Equate Silicon
Valley To Detroit
03/28/2005 01:28 PM
In May of 2003, we pointed out that the NY Times was running an article which suggested that Silico n Valley was becoming more like Detroit -- no longer driving the economy, but just a cog with cyclical ups and downs. In other words, it's just a producing industry, rather than an innovating one that increases efficiencies or changes the overall market. It appears that despite what appears to be a return of some interest in the tech world, the NY Times is still pitching almost exactly the same story and is comparing Silicon Valley to Detroit again -- though, at least they give equal space to those who disagree. This isn't to say Silicon Valley, the geographical region, isn't facing challenges -- but to compare "technology" in general to "the automotive industry" specifically, is clearly an apples and oranges comparison. The technology industry isn't just about final products, but about making the process more efficient. It doesn't always work -- and there are other factors involved, but the entire tech industry doesn't die off just because the economy had some problems.

Frank Rich: Mel Gibson Forgives Us for His Sins. The vilification of Jews by Mr. Gibson, his film and some of his allies, unchallenged by his media enablers, is not happening in a vacuum. We are in the midst of an escalating election-year culture war in which those of "faith" are demonizing so-called "secularists" (for which read any Jews critical of Mr. Gibson and their fellow travelers, liberals). Politicians, we are learning, seem increasingly eager to wrap themselves in "The Passion of the Christ" as a handy signal to indicate they are opposed to all those "secularists" whose conspiracy is undermining all that right-thinking Americans hold near and dear.

Heading to PC Forum 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

Next stop in the Technorati speaking tour: PC Forum.

I'll be presenting the company on Monday afternoon - a real honor (go to the bottom of the page). We've got some fun new stuff to show off, and I'm tremendously excited to meet the stellar list of attendees Esther and Daphne always bring in. The big news this year is that that CNET has acquired Edventure Holdings, the company that puts on PC Forum - kudos to Esther, Daphne, Christina, and the team, and my hat goes off to Shelby and the folks at CNET - smart move! (Full disclosure: Esther Dyson is an investor in Technorati)

Golf, anyone?

I'll be heading out to Scottsdale this afternoon, so drop me a line at dsifry at technorati dot com if you are going to be in Scottsdale and are interested in hooking up for a late dinner tonight or golf Sunday morning. I'm not a great golfer, but I'm not a complete duffer - so anyone who enjoys a nice walk on a big manicured lawn along with some interesting conversation, send an email or leave a message at my room at the hotel.
