Angry Developer Bites Back By Deleting
User's Data
09/14/2004 01:48 AM
<b>ultima</b> has brought up <a href='http://developers.slashdot.org/developers/04/09/13/1357202.shtml ?tid=156&tid=98&tid=8' target=_blank>a story</a> from <i>SlashDot</i> that <a href='http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=217200' target=_blank>raised a controversial ethical concern</a> on how far can software owners go with the End-User License Agreement (EULA).

An independent software developer of a Mac program called <i>Echelon</i> bites back at users who pirated his software by deleting their Home Directory (some what equivalent to the profile folder on Windows) if a pirated serial was entered.

Regardless to a more dominating angry response, some users actually approved this decision by arguing that the terms have been mentioned on the EULA which was agreed to by the users. Even with that being said, does this make it "okay" for developers to cross the line? Better yet, where exactly do you draw the line?

Echelon is an MPEG1/2 converter that supports a number of different formats. According to the product's web site, the software has been discontinued due to the lack of support (read: piracy) but legitimate customers may still seek product support via email.

Two Great Events! MySQL User's Conference and Open Source Content Management (OSCOM) Well it looks like April will be a very good month. There's: MySQL User's Conference -- April 10-12, 2003 [_Go_] Open Source Content Management -- April 16-18, 2003 [_Go_] Sigh. No way to be at both and it looks like I'm probably a speaker on Drupal at OSCOM so it'll be less sql, more pages for me. We're still working out what to talk about but I suspect (or hope at least) it'll be interesting.

HELP COMPILE
"THE WEB USER'S ESSENTIAL LINKS AND FREE
DOWNLOADS" LIST

HELP COMPILE
"THE WEB USER'S ESSENTIAL LINKS AND FREE
DOWNLOADS" LIST
06/07/2004 02:25 PM
bookmarkMy Salon Blog colleague Ted Ritzer keeps a list of Useful Web Sites (for all web users, not just bloggers) originally compiled by Kevin Kelly, of Wired, The Well, and Whole Earth Catalog fame. Kevin no longer maintains his list, and instead has an intriguing Cool Tools site, but it's only for the rich -- virtually everything on the site costs money, often a lot of it. So Ted and I agreed it's time to update the Useful Web Sites list, and we need your help. What links and free downloads should every self-respecting Internet user have on their desktop?

The list should not include pay sites, nor should it include news sites, blogs or other sites that appear on blogrolls (too many, and too subjective). Nor should it include highly specialized sites (I have a personal list of favourite genealogy sites, but I realize that few people would consider these 'essential').

To make the list manageable, I've identified 21 categories for the essential links (let me know if you think I've missed an entire category). If I get enough response, I'll publish a list of the Top 3 in each category and keep it on my sidebar or Spurl it (Spurl lets you keep your web bookmarks online and share them with others).

The examples shown for each category are my personal favourites and some of them are eccentric, so they may not make the Top 3 list. Quite a few of them come from the excellent Jason Lefkowitz' Quality Software list (thanks to Internet Time for the link):
  1. Search engines -- e.g. Google
  2. Converters, voice recognition tools and translators -- e.g. Reverso Language Translation
  3. Internet browsing tools and aids -- e.g. Firefox browser, Xne ws newsreader
  4. Website composing and management tools -- e.g. HTML-Kit web page editor
  5. Publishing tools - e.g. PDFCreator
  6. Word processing and office productivity -- e.g. OpenOffice
  7. File and desktop management -- e.g. FilZip compression software, Furl digital filing cabinet
  8. Writing aids -- e.g. The 39 Steps, Rhymezone
  9. Reference tools -- e.g. IMDB movie & TV show database
  10. Music and book sellers -- e.g. FYE, CDBaby, McNally Robinson
  11. Consumer information -- e.g. CNet product reviews
  12. File sharing tools
  13. Internet streaming radio/video -- e.g. ShoutCast
  14. Connectivity and discussion tools -- e.g. Thunderbird e-mail, SightSpeed videoconferencing, Trillian IM and chat integrator, Skype VoIP
  15. Multimedia tools -- e.g. PhotoPl us image editor, IrfanView image viewer
  16. Website/RSS feed aggregation tools -- e.g. BlogLines site aggregator, Spurl online bookmarking
  17. Network/community builders and expertise finders
  18. Software download sites -- e.g. Download.com, Tucows
  19. Investment tools and information -- e.g. MLS real estate finder
  20. Electronic Payment and LETS tools
  21. Anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-spyware/adware utilities -- e.g. SpyBot anti-spyware
What are your essential links and invaluable free downloads?

Yes, But When Can I Switch Off From
Work?
04/14/2004 10:37 PM
Welcome to the modern "always on, always connected" work world. It's gotten to the point where Microsoft discovered, after handing out smart phones, tablet PCs and broadband connections to employees that they needed to give their employees special instructions on how to turn off work. This isn't a new problem, and it's certainly been discussed before. While some people can handle the work/life balance without a problem - it's not so easy for everyone else. Even for those who can switch off, it's made more difficult by their colleagues who can't - and who contact them at odd hours with work requests. This is going to become a bigger issue for modern companies to deal with. There are, obviously, some advantages, but people need to learn their limits.

The Manglefreuzer Switch

The Manglefreuzer Switch 08/11/2004 11:40 AM

For everyone who has ever struggled with interm ittent problems, the truth has finally l eaked out.

...there's always the chance the mangelfreuzer switch will trip - which would be a problem."

"What's a manglef.. r."

"Manglefreuzer - as in Mangle-Froy-TSir. It's a switch or other device that hardware manufacturers put into their equipment to detect unuathorised access to a box - and makes the system act strangely."

"Strangely?"

"Yes, you know, the odd memory error, harddisk write error, machine crashes, etc. To encourage you not to tamper with the box. And generate revenue for the maintenance provider of course."

"Are you serious?!"

"Of course. Some of our major outages have been those exact same problems."

"You mean they're all caused by a manglefreuzer?"

"Some of them, yes. Obviously no sane vendor would build in something which could be conclusively linked as the source of a problem, so they make the outages sporadic and hard to track down..."

"And people know about this?"

"Technical people, yes."

"And you're ok with that?"

"We don't really have that much choice in the matter, do we? Anyway all the vendors do it - and not just in computers."

And all this time I've been blaming the problems on interference from low-flying cloaked alien spacecraft. Those PC-building dirtballs!

One Less Reason Not To Switch

One Less Reason Not To Switch 05/11/2004 01:45 PM

Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?
