08/27/2004 01:36 PMWednesday at aKademy provided KDE hackers with their first day without
a special focus. The KDE PIM (Personal Information Management)
developers had a discussion session, I led a Quality Team session on
media and promotion work, and the usability playing ground continued;
otherwise, developers roamed around chatting, hacking, partying and
sleeping (a little). And if that didn't satisfy the KDE developer, he
could always take some time out for one of three consecutive dinners
or celebrate his exam results.

08/27/2004 01:37 PMDay three of aKademy opened with presentations in two tracks, covering
the themes of multimedia on the desktop and integration. A cruel
starting time of 8.45 meant that the first talks suffered from a
rather low attendance, perhaps due to the exploits of certain KDE
hackers. But those who managed to crawl out of bed so early were not
disappointed.

08/23/2004 08:26 AMLUDWIGSBURG, GERMANY -- During the opening day of KDE's World Summit
-- aKademy -- the idea that there's no such thing as a free lunch was
easily dismissed thanks to meal tickets from IBM and a local cafe,
though sadly those who convened to discuss and celebrate free software
weren't rewarded with free beer. With approximately half a thousand
people currently registered, months of preparation have turned into a
day of frantic setting up and a lively meeting of the KDE Project's
governing board, the KDE e.V.

of the marathon
09/02/2004 12:07 PMDay eight of aKademy marked the end of the coding marathon. As though
restless with their desktop, KDE hackers turned their attention to a
tutorial in live cracking, an impromptu demonstration of command line
tools, and a brief rootkit panic. Despite the shift in focus, I found
some time to talk to some members of the documentation team about
their plans.

08/27/2004 01:37 PMWriting about aKademy can begin to feel a little like writing a soap
opera guide without the romance (so far). To save your patience, this
report from the first two days of the coding marathon will focus
largely on the scheduled content, and in particular on developments in
accessibility, usability and local KDE groups. The coding marathon
lasts for five days, in between the developer conference and the user
conference, and allows the project's hackers to work solidly for just
under a week under the same roof, and spend time discussing and
working on practical issues. Alongside the marathon, a series of
tutorials are being run by some of the top hackers and professionals
in their fields.

Users and Admins
09/03/2004 08:15 AMDay nine of aKademy saw the start of the Users and Administrator's
Conference, and the celebration of the international Software Freedom
Day. With the end of the developers' section of the summit, the
hacking rooms began to thin out, but the loss in numbers was
accommodated by (for the most part local) crowds of users filing in to
hear from developers and other users and administrators. And for those
following the SUSE-Novell developments, a keynote from a Novell
employee was not to be missed.

Why Knoppix chose KDE
09/07/2004 10:52 AM The tenth and final day of the KDE World Summit 2004 - aKademy -
presented visitors with a second opportunity to learn more about some
of KDE's key technologies, and to hear of how KDE has been
successfully deployed by others. A track on groupware and
collaboration tools gave developers the chance to show off their work,
whilst a track on success stories turned the tables, allowing visitors
and developers alike to hear of KDE being used in deployments ranging
from 10,000 desktops to the famous Live CD Knoppix.

org/andy/blog/Last week's World Summit on the
Information Society was covered by bloggers from around the world,
using articles and streaming media to capture summit events.
DailySummit.net, an online collaboration of British and Arab
journalists, reported on the ins and outs of the summit almost in real
time, with contributors blogging via Wi-Fi-enabled laptops during
events and press conferences. Student journalists from sub-Saharan
Africa, meanwhile, contributed articles and streaming video as part of
the Highway Africa News Agency, a project of South Africa Broadcasting
Corporation and Rhodes University. Similarly, OneWorld TV featured a
team of young journalists from South America and Asia who created
video diaries for distribution over the Internet. And
Communications-Related Headlines' own Andy Carvin offered his own
perspective on his Waste of Bandwidth blog, covering events and
speeches ranging from Stanford University's Lawrence Lessig and
Richard Stallman of the free software movement to Nigerian President
Olusegun Obasanjo and
Iranian President Mohammed Khatami.

The World Summit on the
Information Society is meeting in Geneva this week ,
to discuss questions of planetary internet policy and
governance.
One aspect of discussion concerns
the role of the United States as internet's creator and most influential player , which some nations
contest politically and ideologically . One proposal might be to raise the
International Telecommunications Union ( ITU ) as a global regulatory
agency.
An additional topic is likely to be support for open access
scholarship .
The British
Council
has
launched a weblog for
following the Summit 's discussions and events .

The World Summit on the Information Society ( WSIS ) meeting
prepared to begin today, with a variety of
issues beginning to emerge. Draft declarations of principles and
action have been published .
Some friction occured over the United States' leading role in internet
governance, with a US
representative ejected , and some nations calling for a United
Nations agency to take a leading role. The United Nation's secretary,
Kofi Annan, called for the summit to preserve media freedoms.
The WSIS is being covered by the DailySummit weblog and the WSIS Newsfeed . The very popular HelloWorld! project is
beaming Web-based and SMS-sent messages to global locations, including
Geneva, by laser, as an artistic commentary on the event.

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit
04/09/2004 04:05 PMDanny O'Brien has written up one of the first summits between spammers
and spam-fighters for the Guardian. It's a great piece.
Surprisingly, no such shootings occur. It's oddly intimate, watching
the spammers and the anti-spammers mill around each other like this.
It feels like a temporary ceasefire in a vicious war that to most of
us seems to be a stalemate...
Over the past year, though, a series of meetings arranged by a trusted
figure in the American anti-spam community, Anne Mitchell, have been
slowly bringing the two sides together. These mini-conferences, held
under the banner of the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy,
have mostly been between the highest-ranking ISPs - MSN, AOL - and
commercial email marketers of the most squeaky clean kind. Initially
in secret, these days the meetings are more public.
