The Apartment Phone (No, The Actual
Building)

Well, if this isn't a Friday "Too Much Free Time" story, I'm not sure what is. An eccentric Australian millionaire nicknamed "Crazy John" for a popular chain of mobile phone retail shops (Crazy Eddie should sue -- though after his problems with the law, he may not want to go anywhere near a court room) now wants to use some of his millions to build an apartment building in the shape of a mobile phone -- complete with number buttons, "end" and "send" buttons, and a "rooftop" antenna. He hasn't chosen what phone the building will look like, but is hoping that a handset maker will pop up and sponsor the project in return for the landmark advertising. Of course, at the rate handset designs go out of style, this certainly could be risky. Who would really want to live in an obsolete mobile phone shaped building? Also, what would happen if the eventual sponsor wanted it in the shape of a clamshell flip phone?

In the aftermath of the tsunamis that devastated Asia in late December 2004, observers pointed out that lack of official, credible information gave victims and governments in the area little prior warning of the impending disaster. Although still in the developmental stages, a partnership of the Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN) and the Organsation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is creating an information system that may significantly reduce the impact of future natural and manmade disasters. Native American Pueblo and Navajo Nations in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado are providing pilot sites for the GDIN system. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]

World Economic Forum: Global Competitiveness Programme
http://www.weforum.org/site/homepublic.nsf/Conten t/Global+Competitiveness+Programme

Operating as part of the World Economic Forum, the Global Competitiveness Programme is perhaps best known for its flagship publication, The Global Competitiveness Report. These series of reports are perhaps the most authoritative assessments of national economies throughout the world. The Reports themselves were first published in 1979, and continue to be made available in a variety of formats. And while the entire contents are not available here, visitors may read executive summaries and peruse other data. One of the most recent publications is the Lisbon Review, which assesses the progress made by the 15 EU member states (as of April 2004) in implementing the goals of the Lisbon Strategy of political and economic reforms.
Additionally, the site includes competitiveness report summaries on Africa, the Arab world, and the worldwide improvements in global technology. This will be added to International Trade Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide. [From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

A Theory of Global Capitalism -
Production, Class and State in a
Transnational World
07/16/2004 09:54 PM
Globalization is a topic surrounded by controversy and contention, as evidenced by the numerous studies of it and the many political movements both for and against it. Whilst there is little agreement on the nature of globalization, it is generally accepted that the world is going through a period of increasing change and growing interconnection. Do these changes have historical precedent or do they represent a qualitatively new process? Are these changes benefical to society or detrimental? Which groups benefit from these changes and which groups are threatened? Are these changes inevitable or are other alternatives possible? These are some of the questions addressed by William I. Robinson's A Theory of Global Capitalism.
