Leading Identity Management Vendors Join
Microsoft to Demonstrate Federated
Identity Using Web Services
05/25/2004 11:30 PM
Microsoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*). Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation (WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft, showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web services environment.

Peter Caputa unveils one of his secret weapons.

How to make money from Events.

This is just the beginning of a new era - where smart entreprenuers like Peter show us how to make money from micro-content.

Congrats to Peter and the WhizSpark team!

No wonder he's been so busy. But NOT too busy to help start OpenEvents!

Here's Peter's post.....

Welcome to the Unveiling of WhizSpark's secret Sauce. Most of you have seen the social network - mailing list tools - event directory part of WhizSpark.

And then you thought... "Do they really think they will make any money from that site?". The answer is probably no. That won't pay the bills or bring us to our next liquidation event. Unless, of course, we follow the monetization path of Friendster and MySpace of littering your screen with ads.

So, what will?

(Take a deep breath b4 you read this next sentence)

We are providing incentivized viral word of mouth permission based email marketing and branded hosted event websites with social networking functionality as promotion services for event planners, venues, charitable organizations, political campaigns, business seminars, musicians, conferences, etc etc..

I was waiting until I could show it, to talk about it. Because it is obviously not that easy to explain.

We are pleased to announce our first 3 big events/sales:

Edd ie Kennison Foundation's Celebrity Fashion Show, Dinner, Silent & Live Auction, Comedy Show.

Wor mtownnightlife.com 2005 Madden VideoGame Tournament.

Red 1888's Model Search Competition by Spothound.com (R-rated)

So, if you know anyone that qualifies as a customer (see the aforementioned list above), please send me an email or them an email. We'd love some referrals.

And if you are interested in any of those events, let me know and I can hook you up.

Web Services Dynamic Discovery
(WS-Discovery) Specification Released

Web Services Dynamic Discovery
(WS-Discovery) Specification Released
02/19/2004 03:34 PM
WS-Discovery enables advertisement and dynamic discovery of services on both ad-hoc and managed networks. Services may be organized in a hierarchical scope, and clients can query for services by type as well as scope without heavy administrative costs. This specification enables numerous design patterns for enterprise services; provides a discovery architecture for peer-to-peer services like buddy lists, websites, and file shares; and forms the basis for discovering network-attached devices such as printers, cameras, and PDAs.

Staged Event-Driven Architecture for

Staged Event-Driven Architecture for
Internet Services (pdf)
09/18/2002 08:23 AM
As a more concrete example, Figure 1 shows the load on the U.S. Geological Survey Pasadena Field Office Web site after a large earthquake hit Southern California in October 1999. The load on the site increased almost 3 orders of magnitude over a period of just 10 minutes, causing the Web server’s network link to saturate and its disk log to fill up [142]. Note that this figure shows only the number of requests that were successfully logged by the server; due to the overload, it is likely that an even larger number of requests were present but not recorded. During the load spike, the system administrator who was responsible for the Web site was unable to login to the system remotely to clear up the disk log, and had to physically reboot the machine in order to regain control.

The most common approach to dealing with heavy load is to overprovision resources. In the case of a Web site, the administrators simply buy enough Web server machines to handle the peak load that the site could experience, and load balance across them. However, overprovisioning is infeasible when the ratio of peak to average load is very high; it is not practical to purchase 100 or 1000 times the number of machines needed to support the average load case. -- Matt Walsh "zeldman.bebe"

Five large technology companies have banded together to support the European Commission in its attempt to stop Microsoft Corp. using its PC operating systems monopoly to dominate the markets for workgroup server and media player software. IBM Corp., Nokia Corp., Oracle Corp., RealNetworks Inc. and Red Hat Inc. have applied as a group to intervene against Microsoft as the company appeals the Commission's antitrust ruling "because they are very concerned about Microsoft's anticompetitive conduct," according to their representative, Thomas Vinje, a partner with legal firm Clifford Chance LLP.
