truly anthropocentric computer environment. [PRWEB May 26, 2004]

Adobe Launches Own E-Book Store
Adobe Launches Own E-Book Store
12/18/2003 04:35 AMSo soon after Barnes & Noble shut down their own
eBook
store, Adobe apparently realized they need to jumpstart this
market on their own, if they want to make sure that electronic books
start showing up in their preferred pdf format. So,
they've gone and launched their own damn e-book store with a ton
of books and magazines - all in the pdf format, of course. An
interesting idea (sort of like Apple opening up iTunes to drive iPod
sales). However, Adobe may find that they have a bigger hurdle to
face. They won't get the same sort of buzz that Apple got, most
people don't associate Adobe with electronic books, and plenty of
people are still unsure why they want electronic books. Yes, there
are some who like e-books, and who are familiar with Adobe's efforts,
but it's been a small group, and it's unclear if this will alert many
more people.

expert advice for using the programs together efficiently. The updated
series is now in color and offers complete, self-paced lessons. A
CD-ROM with customized files to guide readers through the lessons and
special projects, sample test questions from Adobe's certification
exam, and instructional videos are also included.
Adobe Press' classic Classroom in a Book series debuted in 1993 and

Alexandria is a GNOME application to help manage a
book collection. It retrieves book information
(including cover pictures) from several online
libraries, allows you to search for a book (either
by EAN/ISBN, title, authors, or keyword), can
import and export data into ONIX, Tellico, and
EAN/ISBN-list formats, generates Web pages from
your libraries, allows marking your books as
loaned, saves data using the YAML format, features
an HIG-compliant user interface, shows books in
different views that can be filtered or sorted,
and handles book rating and notes.
Changes:
This is mostly a quick bugfix version, even if some features were
added in the mean time (such as a book provider to the Amadeus
Austrian library). 0.5.0 users are encouraged to upgrade.

of documents you wish to keep track of, allowing the user to view, add
and edit information from one application. Information added or
changed in Crm4Mac is stored in Apple's iApps, so it will still be
available to you if you decide not to continue using the application.
Crm4Mac is currently in public beta testing; downloads are available

08/18/2004 04:46 AMA fascinating new book dropped into my inbox the other day. Now before
you get the wrong impression, "fascinating" in this context doesn't
mean a "page-turner" or "pot-boiler" such as "The Da Vinci Code."
Rather, I'm thinking of "fascinate" as meaning: "to render motionless,
as with a fixed stare or by arousing terror or awe." Not terror in the
Stephen King sense, though. In this book, the cast of characters is
all-Windows: Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server
2003. The plot is all about identifying and solving problems. But it's
not just another troubleshooting tome, not by a long shot.

Windows: How Bill Gates Fumbled the
Future of Microsoft
12/03/2003 12:39 AMDavid Bank's Breaking Windows offers a scathing inside look at the
past few tumultuous years at the Microsoft Corporation. Bank, who
covers the company for The Wall Street Journal, bases this
well-written tale on interviews he has conducted with most major
players (including Bill Gates), along with boxes of e-mails and other
documents that "provided an unprecedented glimpse into strategic
debates and internal decision-making processes of a company that had
long restricted outside access to its insular corporate culture."
Through them he shows how Microsoft, which always put software above
everything--and in more recent years made Windows its number-one
priority--has scrambled and squabbled as first the Internet and then
the U.S. government forced major directional changes and significant
internal reevaluations.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge
Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge
06/17/2005 07:13 PMFor most graphic artists, Adobe's applications are their bread and
butter. Adobe Creative Suite 2 recently hit the streets, but is it
worth paying the price to upgrade? We have a comprehensive look at
Photoshop CS2 along with Bridge, an image browser which "connects" the
Creative Suite 2 applications.
In Photoshop 7, Adobe added a file browser to Photoshop
and let it chill for two versions seeing if it would get better with
age (it didn't). It was a good idea but weird in Photoshop, a really
document-centric program. Now, they've taken it out of Photoshop, made
it an independent program to act as a connector between apps much like
say, a concrete passageway or a road above water.
It makes a lot more sense this way since it was really out of place
as a floating window inside the Photoshop interface. Adobe has added a
favorites and collections pane in addition to the basic file system
browsing, chocked it full of features to interact with other Adobe
apps and added an interactive thumbnail zoom that works much like
iPhoto's.
Of course, there are plenty of other apps on both Windows and Mac
OS X that perform the same function (GraphicConverter represent!). Is
the combination of some spiffy new features in Photoshop CS2 and the
new Bridge enough to make an upgrade worthwhile? There's only one way
to find out...

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AMOne of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales
mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell
became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq
started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out -
and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book
publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized
that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site,
it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's
pissing off retailers, who don't
want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers
say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to
the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it
becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's
also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer
experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online
sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy
am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

01/22/2004 02:13 AMAt the core of Adobe's Creative Suite strategy is the unity,
integration, and simultaneous release of its major design
applications. Photoshop CS (version 8) is a broad and deep upgrade to
the company's anchor image editor. Despite its low-key presentation --
its interface is almost the same as version 7's -- it has amazing new
tools for Photoshop's traditional users. New features, subtly
sprinkled throughout the program, dramatically enhance those users'
capabilities and control over their images. Photographers, artists,
graphic designers, Web designers, and video specialists will see
significant improvements in their images and in the imaging process,
but there's no burdensome learning curve.

03/28/2005 04:05 PMAccording to Betanews, Adobe is planning to
announce a major upgrade to Photoshop CS called Photoshop CS2. The
announcement by Adobe was suppose to be made on Monday of next
week. A press release was posted early and then taken down. According
to Betanews, the new upgrade will be available in May.
The new release promises better tools to
fix common image problems such as red eye and blemishes, as well as
updated support for raw, or uncompressed, images. The software is
expected to start shipping in May. Adobe says it added numerous
features to Photoshop CS2 in response to requests from users and the
changing needs of the digital imaging industry. A new spot healing
brush will fix blemishes, red-eye and distortion from camera lenses.
Users will also be able to scale images with less quality loss than
previous Photoshop versions. A tool known as Vanishing Point will
allow the user to recolor and transform objects in an image without
altering its perspective. Image Warp, another new tool, enables a user
to easily twist, warp or skew an image cleanly using preset functions,
or with custom points. A new version of Camera Raw, Adobe's plug-in
for manipulating uncompressed images from digital cameras, supports
modifying multiple raw files simultaneously. Adobe has also added
batch processing that can be done without launching the Photoshop
executable.

speed and efficiency of designers in a variety of workflows from
text-intensive book, magazine, and newspaper production to high-end
XML-based cross-media workflows. Designers can increase productivity
and create more consistent designs by saving graphic, text, and
frame-level attributes as Object Styles, which are easy to apply and
globally update. Exporting objects with the new InDesign snippets
features enables users to easily share or repurpose live InDesign
content and layouts from part of a page.
