Is There Any Company At All Who Won't
Launch Their Own Music Download Store?
12/08/2003 03:33 PMOkay, someone make it stop. Last week I mentioned HP's plans to
open
their own music download store and wondered if there was any tech
company that
wasn't planning their own music download store.
Apparently, I was too narrow in my focus. Coca-Cola has announced
plans to offer a music download store as well. It's beginning
to feel like the "feature" that everyone wants to add. "Oh yeah, our
website has a spinning logo, a store locator, search functionality,
customer self-service, and, of course, our own music download store."
Of course, this will be like every other download music store with
silly limitations and bad pricing, but that's the way things go. It's
difficult to see what benefit an outfit like Coke stands to gain.
It's way (way) out of the core competency, and most of these stores
have been shown to act as loss leaders for other products (like music
players). I'm not sure how music becomes a loss leader for soda. I'm
sure there will be many more similar announcements before some sense
of sanity is reached, and companies start shutting down or merging all
of these download stores into just a few entities. Having all of
these separate stores with different restrictions does no good.
iTunes Music Store nears UK launch
iTunes Music Store nears UK launch
06/07/2004 12:24 PMThe Register
sp
eculates that Apple may be ready to launch their
iTunes Music Store on June
15th. Invites have been sent out to national newspapers to expect an
‘major’ announcement on that day.
Apple’s
WWDC is on 28
June. Mac OS X 10.4 (“Tiger”) will be previewed (and
perhaps new hardware?), so it seems unlikely that the 15 June
announcement centres on Apple’s computing technology.
The German version of
iTMS is also expected to launch on this date (no
doubt with the complete David Hasselhoff back catalogue), adding to
the expectation.

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With
One Less Online Music Store To Deal With
06/11/2004 12:55 PMIn early 2003 a group of the top brick-and-mortar music retail shops
announc
ed plans for a unified downloadable music store that got lots of
attention. We were a bit skeptical, assuming (like most companies)
they wouldn't really want to cannibalize their existing business
models and would come up with something that was expensive and weak.
They didn't even get that far. Without ever launching,
they've pulled the plug on the
program, claiming that there's just not enough business in online
music sales for it to matter to them. While it's nice that there's
not "yet another" online music store offering music that won't work
with any music you buy from any other music download store, this is
quite a statement on how these stores view downloadable music.
Downloadable music is much more of a threat to the record stores'
business models than the record labels, yet the stores have mostly
decided to put their heads in the sand and assume it's not worth
worrying about. Someone ought to send them a copy of

(with MSN?)
06/09/2004 08:46 AMThe Beatles have been one of the biggest holdouts in releasing their
catalog for sale online, and the lack of such mega-hits as "Let it Be"
and "Yesterday" has been cited as a major weakness for fledgling,
Web-based music stores. Negotiators for the Beatles have talked with
several companies, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft Corp's MSN,
which is expected to open an Internet music store late this summer,
people familiar with the talks told Reuters.

12/02/2003 10:22 PMWhat a world iTunes has created. If a company is in the technology
space, it seems to be preparing to offer its own music download store.
Next up to bat will be

bets when all the various tech company run download music stores will
start folding, be spun off, or start merging?
