Gateway's digital jukebox

Gateway's digital jukebox 11/11/2003 12:49 PM

New 20GB hard drive based MP3 player from Gateway. With a few minor differences, the DMP-X20 seems about the same as Samsung and Dell's new hard drive MP3 players, and has a built-in FM tuner, a mic for voice recording, a 2.5-inch LCD screen, and uses USB 2.0 for transferring files from a PC. Gateway's MP3 Photo Jukebox is an interesting combination of good ideas poorly implemented. The $250 player has some intriguing features--including the ability to store and display digital photos--but in the end its weaknesses far outweigh its strengths.

One of those weaknesses is the display. The Jukebox is the first "mini" hard drive MP3 player to offer a color LCD, which Gateway touts as a major selling point. Unfortunately, at just 1.6 inches across (measured diagonally), and with a meager resolution of 128 by 128 pixels, the oddly square screen is much too small for comfortable photo viewing.

The Gateway has other size issues, too: While its light weight (3.4 ounces) and capacity (4GB) are similar to those of small-fry competitors such as the IPod Mini, Rio Carbon, and Creative Zen Micro, the Gateway is noticeably bigger than each of those players. In fact, its dimensions are close to those of the heavier 20GB Apple IPod. As a result, the Jukebox feels a bit hollow in your hand.

That's it, I'm getting a Dell Digital
Jukebox

Have you seen the new Apple iPod page? The new units are outrageously priced at $300 to $500 dollars. Worse yet, every iPod comes with all sorts of new limits! You can only marry one computer to your iPod, under one user. You can only fit 15Gb, 20Gb, and 40Gb of music on each. I have 54Gb of music that my entire family shares, and now there's no iPod that fits my use. You can't play Windows Media Player files. You can't play OGG files on it either. I'll wait until Steve Jobs changes the Apple homepage, but in the meantime I'm seriously considering moving to the Dell DJ.

Gateway Photo Jukebox Reviewed 01/05/2005 06:50 AM

pcwor_gatewaypj.jpg imagePCWorld's review of the Gateway Photo Jukebox is less than compelling. The 5GB hard disk-based player's size is "close to those of the heavier 20GB Apple IPod," while the color screen is too small to really be of much use, especially for viewing photos. All in all, it looks like another also ran—maybe that's why we haven't seen Gateway pushing it much since it was first announced.
