06/07/2004 01:46 PMMicrosoft this week will appeal against a landmark European Union
antitrust decision and ask an EU court to suspend the order pending
the appeal. "We believe we have a strong case," said Tom Brookes, a
Microsoft spokesman in Brussels. The European Commission, the EU's
executive arm, in March said Microsoft had illegally "bundled" its
Windows Media Player audiovisual software with its Windows operating
system and used its monopoly in the market for desktop
personal-computer operating systems to illegally muscle its way into
the market for software for more powerful computers called workgroup
servers.

01/04/2005 11:03 AMA.G. Edwards upgraded Symantec to "buy" from "hold" with a target
price of $30. A.G. Edwards said the performance of the software and
network security company and Veritas Software, which Symantec agreed
to acquire, will be better than expected in the intermediate term. The
research firm said that for Symantec, antivirus growth in calendar
2005 "should exceed consensus [percentage] growth expectations of the
mid to high teens." Also as the proposed merger "is not being driven
by synergies (but rather diversification, in our opinion), it should
pose less potential risk from disruption," the firm said. "Combined we
think the two companies could generate $165 million more in revenue in
fiscal 2006 than currently projected (about 5 cents per share)," A.G.
Edwards said.

5 years ago… Microsoft launches
instant challenge to AOL
07/23/2004 12:49 PM23.07.1999: Microsoft has launched a product that aims to break
America Online's (AOL) dominance of the instant-messaging (IM) market.
The software, called MSN Messenger Service, will be built into
Microsoft's Hotmail web-based email service. It will enable users to
enjoy real-time interaction with users of AOL's IM and with 40 million
Hotmail users around the world.
AOL has dominated this market with IM, which only allows interaction
with other IM users. Microsoft has claimed MSN Messenger Service will
break down the proprietary nature of this service.
But the move looks likely to provoke fury from AOL. A New York Times
report quoted an AOL spokesman as saying the practice goes beyond
simple reverse engineering, and is "akin to the practice of hackers".

Microsoft, Yahoo Issue Responses to
Gmail Challenge
06/21/2004 10:39 AMResponding to the impending public release of Google's Gmail service,
which is offering users a full gigabyte (1 GB) of email storage space,
Microsoft's MSN Hotmail and Yahoo's Mail service are both dramatically
increasing their storage allotments. Yahoo's updated service debuted
late last week, but Microsoft's planned update should be available
soon. Yahoo Mail can't quite match Gmail's 1 GB offering, but the
service has made a dramatic jump from the previous 4 MB limitation to
100 MB, which Yahoo executives say should be enough for most users.
"What we are trying to do is take storage off the table as an issue,"
said Yahoo vice president Brad Garlinghouse, noting that Yahoo
previously charged users $60 a year for 100 MB of storage. Yahoo also
raised the email attachment size limit from 3 MB to 10 MB, and the
company now offers only one paid upgrade package: For $20 a year,
users can upgrade to a whopping 2 GB of storage space. Users who pay
for Yahoo Mail will also see no graphical ads, the company says.

01/05/2004 02:30 AMApple Computer CEO Steve Jobs was asked during a November meeting with
analysts whether the company would ever make its iPod music player
work directly with something other than its iTunes Music Store. There
was a noticeable sense of accomplishment in his voice when he
answered. First he pointed out the dominant market position achieved
by the iPod. Then he noted that the iTunes store had just captured
more than 80 percent of the market for legally downloaded music.

Apple to go head-on with Microsoft?
12/31/2004 10:55 AMNot quite, but Apple Computer Inc. will try to gain more consumers by
lowering their prices on their iMac product. The iMac, an all around
product, for the advertising and graphic sector might become a bit
less expensive during 2005. Apple wants to take a piece out of
Microsoft's bussines since they feel their iPod product is doing so
good at the moment and Microsoft's leading product: Windows is having
a heap of security problems. Although Apple made no announcement at
this time, word around the campfire is, Apple plans on selling $500
iMac's.
