Here's a free idea. (They are usually a dime a dozen.) I call it the Freedom of Choice of Where You Put Your iMac G5.
Battery pack for the iMac G5, so that you get can have a very heavy laptop that you can move your iMac G5 easily anywhere in your house without needing to shut down the machine.

New iMac?

New iMac? 08/27/2004 01:33 PM

Giz modo had this snapshot of what is reportedly Apple's new iMac G5. It's supposed to be released next week, but somebody got a sneak peek in an elevator at Charles DeGaulle Airport. Looks to be little more than a thick flat panel monitor, with the computer's guts tucked behind the screen.

I would think that would be an easy build — just use the basic parts from a laptop unit, wrap it with a spiffy new skin, jam in a G5 processor and the proper cooling mechanisms, and there you have it.

Drool.

The Sub-$500 iMac?

The Sub-$500 iMac? 12/29/2004 11:38 AM

This could be fun! Think Secret says they know what The Steve will be unveiling at the January 11 Macworld Expo: a bare bones, G4-based iMac without a display that will retail for $499.

This new product will be for a Windows user who has experienced the iPod, the ease of use of the iTunes software, and has played around with a Mac at an Apple retail store just long enough to know he'd buy one if it were a little cheaper.

Code name Q88, the machine is said to be very small and designed to either go underneath a monitor or stand upright, alongside a second computer. The guys over at MacSlash are hoping that it will also have a built-in KVM that will allow PC switchers to run the iMac side-by-side with their existing PC, using the same keyboard, mouse & monitor. That might be a little much to hope for, but if the rest is true, that might shake things up a bit, don't you think?

20" iMac

20" iMac 11/18/2003 11:24 PM
The 20" iMac doesn't look as ungainly as I would expect, but it's still surprising. Is there really a market for a slow Mac with a big screen? Apple used the introduction of the dual 1.8GHz G5 as an excuse to quietly replace its bogus SPEC benchmarks with something more realistic. (But you know someone is going to say, "Why didn't they compare against the dual 3.2GHz xw8000? It's been out for three hours!")

New iMac Details

New iMac Details 08/15/2004 09:26 PM
Think Secret a popular Mac rumor site has claimed to receive the specifications from sources regarding Apple's upcoming re-designed iMac. Along with brief description of what this new PC will look like.

The new iMac will apparently not have an adjustable neck, but instead will feature an all-in-one design. A design that will be in sync with its logic board, optical drive, and other components. Think Secret's sources claim that it will similar to Sony's VAIO W700G. Also saying that "It's not fair to compare the new iMac to the Sony model". Adding that the iMac will have sleeker lines and contours, and knowing Apple it's going to look interesting.

It's reported that the new iMac will offer speeds between 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz (using the G5 processor). All models will be able to support a maximum of up to 2GB of DDR memory, AirPort Extreme-ready, built in microphone, and built-in stereo speakers. If this rumor is true iMac fans won’t have wait long for its arrival. As it's already being reported to be unveiled at the Apple Expo in Paris (August 31, 2004).

Keep in mind that this is still a rumor, but Think Secret has a good track record of its rumors being true. If that's the case this new iMac will certainly have an attractive look. After all just about anything is better than Sony’s design.

This Last Hour In iMac 08/16/2004 12:41 PM

himac300225.jpg imageSo how about that new iMac, huh? There has been plenty of talk around Internet about the new machine - set to be announced August 31 at the Apple Expo in Paris, according to most rumors - including this speculative design by fantasy Mac render man Isamu Sanada. All signs are pointing to a pizza box-style unit, like the Sony VAIO W700G all-in-one unit, but thought differently, natch. Sometimes-useful Mac rumor site Think Secret has a long list of specs, including information that the new G5-powered units will come in 17- and 20-inch flavors, with the entry-level "Education" model coming in at $1,300 and without optical drive (so those pesky kids can't steal music or install software, sources say). It all looks sort of interesting, I suppose, but in my heart of hearts I wish that the new iMac were just a plain white box, sans monitor, that could bring the power of G5 into homes and schools for $1,000 a pop. I know this isn't going to happen, but I can dream.

More details and links, including an Apple "colored chameleon case" patent application, after the jump.

A faithful reader sent in this pic with the story that it was surreptitiously snapped in an elevator at Charles de Gualle. If I weren't feeling crappy, this would be the part where I make a joke about Apple and unsecured AirPorts.

Apple iMac G5

Apple iMac G5 08/31/2004 06:03 AM

imac_g5_paris.jpg imageAnd it lives! Apple has fully unveiled the new iMac G5, and it's basically a Pizza box PC that looks a lot like the new Cinema displays, except white. Available in 17- and 20-inch form, the machines will come with 1.6 and 1.8GHz G5 processors, respectively. I'll go ahead and throw up this post with pictures, then actually wake up and jump up with more details.

Read - Product Page [Apple]

Update: One sort of geeky thing that immediately is noticable is that the iMac G5 doesn't share the "50% of the processor speed" bus as the PowerMac G5s. That's going to be a real performance wrinkler (although still a welcome bump from the G4).

Display-Less iMac?

Display-Less iMac? 12/29/2004 09:51 AM

headless_imac imageThink Secret is reporting that Apple will unveil a new display-less iMac at the upcoming MacWorld Expo on January 11th that will sell for just $500. Similar in power to an iBook, the G4-powered box will be targeted at Windows users who would like to move over to a Mac, but haven't considered it as an option because the entry level machine was an iMac or an eMac, both of which are more expensive than a rock-bottom Windows PC.

While I'd love for this rumor to be true (I'd definitely be buying at least one, if not more), keep in mind this is joining the iPod Flash, Motorola iPhone, and Apple Asteroid FireWire audio interface in the list of possible product releases from Apple this January.
